BREAKING: Willian announces he is leaving Chelsea amid Arsenal links

Willian has confirmed his exit from Chelsea – paving the way for Arsenal to snap him up on a free.

The Brazilian released an emotional statement on Sunday, thanking the fans and reflecting on his seven years at Stamford Bridge.

Willian is now expected to pen a contract worth £150,000-a-week at Arsenal.

The 32-year-old forward wrote: “They were seven wonderful years.

“In August 2013 when I received the offer from Chelsea, I was convinced that this was where I had to play. Today I am certain that it was the best of decisions. There were no many happy times, some sad, there were trophies and it was always very intense.

“Yet, beyond the trophies, I learnt a lot about myself. I developed a great deal, becoming a better player and a better person. With each training session, with each game, with every minute spent in the dressing room, I was always learning.

“I am really grateful to the Chelsea fans for the affectionate way they welcomed me at Stamford Bridge and their support throughout my time at the club.

“There was also criticism, which is normal, what is important though is that both the affection and criticism drove me to always give my all in every training session, every game, to be constantly improving until my very last minute in a Chelsea shirt!

“The time has now come to move on. I am certainly going to miss my team-mates. I will miss all the staff at the club who’ve always treated me like a son and I will miss the fans.

“I leave with my head held high, safe in the knowledge that I won things here and always did my best in a Chelsea shirt!

“My heartfelt thanks go out to all of you and God bless you! Borges da Silva.”

Willan declines MLS move to inter miami

According to the NobleSports, the Brazilian declined a multi-million dollar offer to play in the MLS with the new franchise owned by David Beckham.

The new Major League Soccer franchise Inter Miami made a bid in January during the winter transfer market to sign Chelsea forward Willian. According to the NobleSports, David Beckham’s team made a huge offer for the 31-year-old, who will become a free agent this summer as his contract with Chelsea ends.

Inter Miami offering three-year, $100,000-a-week deal
N claims that Inter Miami offered Willian a three-year contract to play in the MLS. This is the timespan he wanted to renew with Chelsea for, but the team from London has only offered him 24 more months.

On top of a three-year contract, Inter Miami was willing to pay the Brazilian $100,000 a week to play in Major League Soccer. It was Willian who said during an interview that he would like to play in the MLS when the time was right, because he wants to remain in Europe one more year.

Tottenham eyeing Willian swoop
Since he wants to play a couple more years in Europe and his time at Chelsea is done this summer, several teams want to sign Willian on a free transfer. Tottenham is one of them, with former Blues boss José Mourinho keen to bring the Brazilian on board for the next campaign.

PSG suggests Willan as Neymar’s replacement

Advertisements

As explained by NobleSports in recent days, a deal for Neymar this summer has been practically ruled out bt Barcelona. The club will focus on Lautaro Martinez and will only be able to even think about the Brazilian if sales are productive.

In France, Paris Saint-Germain expect another calm summer in that sense. They know about Barça’s delicate financial situation and don’t fear another offensive from the Spanish champions.

However, according to Le 10 Sport, Leonardo has decided to prepare for the scenario where Barça do come in for Neymar, just to keep on top of things.

The French outlet reports that PSG’s sporting director has lined up Chelsea’s Willian — another Brazilian winger, albeit older at 31 — as a possible replacement.

Willian’s contract expires at Stamford Bridge this summer and could decide to leave the London club for one final big challenge in Europe.

Madrid shuns Willan’s interest

Zinedine Zidane has reportedly turned his nose up at the prospect of signing out of contract Chelsea winger Willian this summer.

Advertisements

With the financial implications brought about by the coronavirus pandemic set to limit the spending power of Europe’s elite, players of Willian’s ilk – who can be drafted in on a free transfer at the end of the season – are set to be in high demand.

Despite this, Spanish news outlet Ok Diario (via Le 10 Sport) claim Real Madrid have rejected the chance to sign the Brazilian at the end of the campaign. Zidane doesn’t believe the Chelsea man suits Los Blancos’ style his play, while there are also concerns about his age – Willian will likely be 32 by the time next season gets underway.

In addition, with Real boasting the likes of Eden Hazard, Vinicius Junior, Gareth Bale, Rodrygo and Marco Asensio in their squad, it’s fair to say their priorities lie elsewhere.

Thus, Zidane remains determined to acquire a centre-back, central midfielder and striker ahead of the 2020/21 campaign as the Frenchman goes about returning Los Blancos to their imperious best.

Nevertheless, other clubs remain keen in securing Willian’s services ahead of next season.

Arsenal and Tottenham have emerged as two possible destinations, as the north Londoners prepare to battle it out for the 31-year-old’s signature this summer.

Both clubs are set for a period of minimal spending and have Willian high on their agenda.

PSG, meanwhile, have strong interest in the former Shakhtar Donetsk star, with sporting director Leonardo said to be a huge admirer of the Willian – the fact he can secure the Chelsea man on a free appeals to him even more.

Les Parisiens are set to see several attacking players depart at the end of the campaign – with Edinson Cavani, Julian Draxler and Eric Choupo-Moting all likely to leave – and the Ligue 1 giants view Willian as a player who could provide them with not only supreme technical qualities, but versatility and experience as well.

Arsenal leading the race to sign Willian on a FREE transfer this summer

Advertisements

Arsenal are the front-runners in the chase to land Willian on a free contract from Chelsea this summer.

Advertisements

The Brazilian’s current deal at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of June and talks over a new contract have stalled with the club.

Although the 31-year-old is happy to remain at the Blues he wants longer than the 12-month contract extension he is being offered, and that is allowing Arsenal the chance to pounce according to ESPN.

‘Arsenal are a little ahead today, but everything is still open,’ said reporter Jorge Nicola.

Hit by a double whammy of a potential lack of European football next term on top of the coronavirus outbreak which has devastated finances across many clubs, Arsenal are keen on hunting for bargains when the transfer window reopens.

And with Willian hoping to remain in London having settled in the capital since his 2013 move to Stamford Bridge, Mikel Arteta’s side are perfectly poised to make a move.

Spurs, who had tried to sign Willian back in 2013, are also monitoring his availability while Liverpool are also in the running.

But Arsenal’s willingness to give the Brazilian a multi-year deal could prove key.

His close friendship with former Blues team-mate, compatriot and current Gunners defender David Luiz may also prove an influence.
