Create special courts for rape cases – Ebonyi gov, Umahi calls.

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi has called for the urgent creation of special courts in the state.

In a communique issued after a Security Council meeting on Tuesday in Abakaliki, Governor Umahi said the move is necessary to try offenders of COVID-19 laws, cases of cultism, herdsmen attack, rape, and killings in the state.

Umahi spoke through the Deputy Governor Kelechi Igwe after meeting with members of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) at Akanu Ibiam International Conference Centre.

The governor who said the special court will resolve the cases of rape, killings, attack in some communities suspected to be members of Miyetti Allah, added that these incidents have led to the destruction of farmlands and disruption of peace in the communities affected.

He warned the leadership of the association that they will be held responsible for any destruction of crops, rape, killing, and attack on communities if they do not produce the perpetrators of the evil act amongst their membership within seven days for arrest and prosecution.

Governor Umahi also asked the community leaders and other political stakeholders in the state to take responsibility in their communities.

In doing this, he urged them to produce attackers on herdsmen and their cows for arrest and prosecution, whenever such occurs within seven days.

While expressing worry over the killings and attacks in the communities, Governor Umahi directed that all herders must reside within communities where they graze their cows.

This comes as the state government prohibited the grazing of cows around school premises, churches, and government properties.

David Umahi pleads with Buhari on behalf of Service Chiefs

The Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi has urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to change the nation’s service chiefs.

The Governor made the appeal on Friday while laying the foundation stone of the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital.

The Senate and main opposition party, the PDP, have called for the sack of the service chiefs.

However, Umahi said instead of changing the top officials, more cooperation and information should be provided to them.

“I want to disagree with the National Assembly,” he said. “One thing I’ve realised in this country is that we like change too much. We want everybody to taste every seat. That is not what we need at this crucial time of our security challenges.

“What we need is cooperation with security agencies.”

He lauded the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu as a “stubborn man” who is committed to upholding the “policies and the laws of the land”.

“The Chief of Army Staff is also a very committed person, very friendly with civil society,” he added.

“So what these people need is cooperation, information. It is difficult for people to do anything without information.

“Even when you change, whoever that is coming is going to learn the ropes. And I believe strongly that the decisions taken by the service chiefs are not taken by them alone but by also the senior officers.”

The governors of the southeast have asked teachers in the country to undergo compulsory COVID-19 test.

The Chairman of the Southeast Governors’ forum and Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, disclosed this at the Government House in Abakaliki, the state capital while briefing newsmen of the outcome of the virtual meeting of the forum on Sunday.

Umahi said the forum also reviewing the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic in the region, adding that school infrastructures will be reviewed to support the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) protocols pending when the Federal government decides on when it is safe to reopen schools.

While urging the Igbo people to continue to comply with the COVID-19 protocols, the governor said eastern states will commence COVID-19 testing on every household, targeting people of 65 years and above.

To Reopen Or Not
The South-East Governors’ decision comes as the debate on whether to reopen schools amid the coronavirus pandemic continues.

On July 13, the federal government released guidelines for the safe reopening of school.

“Now is the time to plan and address the eventual safe reopening of schools and learning facilities,” Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said.

“As a responsible government, it is also our duty to provide comprehensive guidelines for a safe and hitch-free reopening of schools and learning facilities. We do so knowing that the health, safety, and security of learners, teachers, education personnel, and families are priorities.”

However, schools have remained closed across the country as the pandemic rages on.

The federal government has relaxed restrictions to allow final year secondary school students prepare and sit for WAEC examinations, but many have voiced concerns on the health implications of such a move.

“For the avoidance of doubts, schools have not resumed,” Chairman of the Presidential Task Force for COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, said on July 2. “Only critical examination classes will be allowed to resume for those who need revision before examinations.

“As we have informed you, the Federal Ministry of Education will consult further with stakeholders before issuing guidelines that will lead to full resumption.

“We appeal to Nigerians to continue to show understanding and to ensure that their wards take full advantage of electronic platforms provided for learning.”

On Sunday, Nigeria reported 555 new cases of COVID-19, pushing the country’s total caseload past the 40,000-mark, according to the NCDC.
