‘When you win, you aim high, Anfield is my way’ – Thiago Alcantara

After a summer of speculation Liverpool’s new midfielder is finally unveiled and Thiago Alcantara has big ambitions in the Premier League.

Liverpool have today announced the signing of Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich on a four-year contract. The deal sees Liverpool pay around £20million up front with another £5million of potential add-ons.

The Spaniard will take the number six shirt previously occupied by Dejan Lovren, the same he wore during his time with Bayern Munich. Speaking on LFCTV this afternoon, Thiago made clear that he feels a connection to the club and expects to win trophies on Merseyside:

“When the years are passing, you are trying to win as much as you can – and when you win, you want to win more. I think this club describes what I am as well; I want to achieve all of the goals, win as many trophies as possible.”

“It also [has] this kind of family [feeling] that I need because we [like to] have a very close relationship with the club and I think I will feel this, I will have this feeling, with this club as well.

“[The fans] are not more excited than I am, for sure not! It is not about saying words, it is about doing the things. I will give my heart on the field to my teammates, the club and also to the fans.”

The midfielder has spent two spells with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, at Barcelona and Bayern, winning four league titles and a Champions League together. His first meeting with his former boss will come in November’s Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium.

FSG willing to spend to bring in “exceptional player”
The signing of a big-name 29-year-old marks a departure from Liverpool’s usual transfer dealings under the ownership of the Fenway Sports Group. The Reds have spent big on players like Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk in recent years but they were considerably younger and were viewed as players with the potential to improve.

Approaching 30, Thiago is already at his peak but is of such quality that Liverpool felt it a worthwhile outlay for a player who won the treble with Bayern last year. He featured as playmaker for the Bavarians and brings qualities that few else in the world possess to Anfield. He made more passes than any other player in the recent Champions League final victory and helped set up the winning goal with an incisive forward pass.

Bayern legend
His former Bayern coach Hansi Flick spoke about the departing midfielder in glowing terms on Thursday:

“Thiago is an exceptional player who spent seven hugely successful years here. He’s a wonderful person and an outstanding professional. It was very emotional today when he said goodbye to us all.”

Under Jurgen Klopp Liverpool’s midfield has been very effective but sometimes lacks a degree of creativity that Manchester City boast in that department. The Reds’ full-backs tend to operate as wide play-makers to take the burden off the midfield trio but Thiago will give them a different option in the middle.

Barcelona interested in Wijnaldum
It had previously been reported that Liverpool would only make a move for Thiago if they offloaded one of their existing midfielders, with Gini Wijnaldum linked with a move to Barcelona to join former national team coach Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman is yet to sign an extension on his current deal which ends next summer, but seems likely to stay with an official bid from Barcelona yet to materialise.

Speaking in Friday’s press conference ahead of the Chelsea game, Klopp said that Thiago’s arrival “has no impact on anybody’s future in a negative way. There will be no impact.”

Thiago joins Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, Naby Keita and Curtis Jones as Liverpool’s midfield options. The Spaniard is expected to become a part of Klopp’s first-choice side but appears unlikely to feature from the start in Sunday’s trip to Stamford Bridge having only recently returned to pre-season with Bayern.

Thiago Delivers Emotional Farewell in Bayern

Advertisements

The Spanish international posted a video along with a letter bidding farewell to the Bavarian side as a move to Liverpool looms.

Thiago Alcantara used his Twitter account to say his goodbyes to Bayern Munich with the Spanish international poised to join Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in a move rumoured to be worth 25 million euro.

In his letter, the 29-year-old maintains that he arrived at the Bundesliga side: “as a young man full of dreams and leaves completely fulfilled having identified with a club, a history, a philosophy, language and a culture”.

In his seven years with the Bavarian side, Thiago has secured seven Bundesliga titles, four German cup wins, three German Super Cups and was part of the victorious side winning the recent Champions League in Lisbon last August.

It’s anticipated that the move to Liverpool will be announced within the next 24 hours.

Thiago dines in Barcelona as he agrees personal terms with Liverpool

Advertisements

Thiago Alcantara has reportedly agreed personal terms with Liverpool and the Bayern Munich midfielder is currently spending time on holiday in Barcelona.

The Spain international’s wife posted a photo of a relaxed looking Thiago with her and their children captioned: ‘The four of us,’ after he was given an extended break by the Bundesliga giants following the Nations League fixtures.

The Spaniard is reportedly desperate to seal a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and BILD maintain that terms have been agreed between the two parties.

The report however states that the club agreeing a transfer fee remains a stumbling block, with last season’s treble winners reticent to let him depart for anything less than £27.5million (€30m).

Thiago’s Bayern Munich colleagues were back in training on Tuesday, including both Niklas Sule and new signing Leroy Sane who had featured for Germany in the past week.

But Spain international Thiago will not be joining them this week after being pictured having a relaxing time on a beach in Barcelona.

Bayern boss Hansi Flick offered very little update on the former Barcelona playmaker’s future, adding that he remains in his plans as long as he is part of his squad.

As stated by Sportsmail, Thiago’s future could hinge on the future of Georginio Wijnaldum, who is set for talks with Klopp upon his return.

Should Barcelona give Liverpool the chance to cash in on Wijnaldum, it would pave the way for Liverpool to move for Thiago.

Thiago Alcantara breaks silence: ‘Strong statement issued against Liverpool’

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara has denied telling the Champions League winners that he wants to leave.

The Spain midfielder is understood to be keen on a new challenge after seven years with the German giants.

The 29-year-old was instrumental as Hansi Flick’s men claimed European glory last month, but has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is a big admirer of Thiago, and has been tipped to make a move if they can do a deal at a reasonable price – while it’s been suggested that the player is keen on a move to Anfield.

Bayern boss Flick and CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge have both gone on record to claim that Thiago wants to depart, with the latter detailing last month: “Regarding Thiago, it’s known that he told us he wanted to do something new.

“If a club approaches us that is willing to pay a fair transfer fee, we will work on it.”

That “fair” fee is understood to be in the region of £27million.

Last week Flick declared: “I assume that he will leave us. I think his decision has been made.“

But speaking ahead of Spain’s clash with Ukraine on Saturday, Thiago, when asked about his future, went against what has been said by Bayern’s top brass.

“I have not said at any time that I am leaving,” declared the playmaker on Saturday.

“Every year you put me at a different club.

“For me, my future is tomorrow’s game and there is nothing more to say. I neither care nor am I interested. What interests me is tomorrow”

“I neither care nor am I interested [about what’s being said about a transfer]. What interests me is tomorrow.”

It comes after Thiago told ZDFon Thursday night: “Bayern is my home and I am happy to be there.”

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen publicly declared his hope this week that the Spanish giants would move to take Thiago back to Camp Nou – seven years after letting him depart for Bayern.

“It is an honour that Marc says my name, because he is an incredible goalkeeper,” said Thiago, when asked about Ter Stegen’s comments.

“But he is not the technical director of any team and there is no need to give an answer.”

Liverpool still links up with Bayern’s Thiago Alcantara

Advertisements

Spain midfielder Thiago remained cautious and refused to comment on specific transfer links following Spain’s 1-1 draw with Germany in the UEFA Nations League.

The 29-year-old had been set to leave Bayern Munich this summer, but insisted in a post-match interview that he was “happy” to be at the club.

This comes after Bayern head coach Hansi Flick conceded that he expects the decorated playmaker to leave the club this summer.

“Bayern is my home and I am happy to be there,” Thiago told ZDF reporters.

Thiago’s campaign with the German club restarts on September 18 but the transfer window remains open until October 6 – so negotiations over his future could still take place for another month.

Farewell Thiago Alcantara – Bayern

Advertisements

Thiago Alcantara will bid farewell to Germany tonight when he lines up for Spain in their UEFA Nations League clash in Stuttgart, according to local Munich media.

The Spanish international midfielder has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool all summer, with Manchester United also said to hold an interest in the 29-year-old prior to their signing of Donny van de Beek from Ajax.

It is the Premier League champions who are said to be Thiago’s destination of choice though, with the former Barcelona star making it clear that he would like to move to Anfield this summer in order to experience life in the Premier League.

Thiago still has one year left on his Bayern contract, but the club have indicated that they won’t stand in his way as he looks to join up with Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Advertisements

For their part, Liverpool insist that no deal for Thiago is imminent, although they are said to be monitoring the situation and preparing an offer.

In Munich though, there is a clear acceptance that the midfielder’s stay in German football is coming to an end after seven Bundesliga titles in seven years at Bayern.

The Munich publication Abendzeitung Munchen have printed a full page preview of the match featuring an image of Thiago with the Champions League trophy, and dubbing the game ‘Thiago’s Abschiedsspiel’ – which translates as testimonial or farewell match.

They add that it is an open secret in Munich that Thiago wants to join Liverpool, and they expect the deal to be wrapped up in the coming weeks once the player has left international duty.

Liverpool are said to be mulling over the fee before they submit an offer for the 37-times capped midfielder.

Liverpool sets to surprise Thiago Alcantara

Advertisements

Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick has again confirmed his belief that Thiago Alcantara wants to move to the Premier League – but the question remains, how does he get there?

Thiago shone in Bayern’s 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea at the weekend, as they booked a quarter-final showdown with former club Barcelona.

But despite Bayern’s desire to keep the 29-year-old with a new contract in Bavaria, he remains intent to move on this summer for a new challenge.

That is something which Flick, named Bundesliga manager of the year this week, can appreciate.

“As a person and as an athlete, I can understand him,” the Bayern head coach says.

“Thiago played for Barcelona, and seven years for Bayern. Now he wants a new challenge, which in my opinion must be the Premier League.”

Liverpool have been heavily touted as Thiago’s preferred destination.

Jurgen Klopp is a long-time fan of the Spanish international, while he would add a little extra quality to the Reds midfield.

However, spending around £25-30million on a player of his age, who has suffered injury issues in previous years, and who would command a major salary – his current deal would mark him out as one of the highest earners at Anfield – doesn’t really fit with Liverpool’s transfer policy of recent years.

Advertisements

Speculation persists that Klopp is convinced he can take his side to the next level, and isn’t quite seeing eye-to-eye with his board over the deal.

Now, unsurprisingly, Sport Bild claim that Thiago’s former mentor, Pep Guardiola, is eyeing a possible move to Manchester City

The City boss nurtured Thiago at Barcelona, before singing him for Bayern in 2013, telling Bayern chiefs in his debut summer that it was “Thiago or nothing.”

As City prepare for David Silva’s exit when their Champions League campaign is over, a move for Thiago as his replacement is now being touted.

Guardiola has previously assured that Phil Foden will take Silva’s role at the heart of midfield at the Etihad.

Advertisements

But as City look to close the gap on Liverpool, and with Foden capable of occupying a number of other positions, could Thiago move to Manchester?

Certainly, the “fair” transfer fee Bayern want, and the player’s salary, aren’t an issue for City.

Thiago’s immediate future remains tied to Bayern for as long as they remain in the Champions League.

But then perhaps Guardiola could be set to move on the blind side for his former charge, to offer him the Premier League solution his current boss believes he is looking for.

If Liverpool aren’t keen, it may well be the only way he arrives in England in the coming months.

Thiago Alcantara dreams shattered

Advertisements

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara would relish the chance to play under Jurgen Klopp but Liverpool have no plans to strengthen their midfield in this transfer window.

According to NobleSports, Thiago is set to be left frustrated, with a move to Anfield unlikely to materialise.

However, if Liverpool do alter their approach and look to bring in a midfielder then the 29-year-old will be one of the players that they consider.

With a year remaining on his contract at Bayern, Thiago has reportedly informed the German club that he is looking to move on.

Advertisements

Bayern are demanding £30million for the Spain international, but it appears that Thiago will have to look at alternative options to Liverpool as he considers his next destination.

Liverpool have a host of midfield options at their disposal, with Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones all available to Klopp.

Therefore, there is little need for them to bring in a new midfielder to add to their numbers in that area of the pitch.

However, even though they won the Premier League title, there were times when Liverpool lacked creativity in midfield this season.

Advertisements

Thiago is vastly experienced and has won seven league titles with Bayern to add to the two he won with Barcelona.

A superb passer, Thiago is a highly creative player and can also operate slightly deeper in midfield if required.

Liverpool have already made one signing this summer, bringing in left-back Kostas Tsimikas to provide cover for Andy Robertson.

Last summer Klopp’s side didn’t bring in a single experienced outfield player, although they did sign Takumi Minamino in January.

‘It’s obvious Thiago wants Liverpool move’ – Hansi flick

Advertisements

Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick has discussed Thiago Alcantara’s transfer situation – and hinted that he wants a Liverpool move.

Alcantara has been linked with a £30million switch to Anfield to link-up with big admirer Jurgen Klopp.

The midfielder was in contract talks with Bayern before withdrawing and declaring his desire for a new challenge.

And Flick has now confirmed he wants a Premier League move, where Liverpool are the only club with which he has been linked.

It remains to be seen whether the Reds will fund a move for the Spaniard, but Flick has no hard feelings over his desire to depart for pastures new.

Advertisements

“I can understand when a player is concerned,” Flick told NobleSports.

“Thiago played in Spain for FC Barcelona and in the Bundesliga for FC Bayern Munich.

“If he wants to try again in the Premier League now, I totally understand. But it would be a shame because Thiago gives our game that certain something.

“That’s why I would like to have him as a coach on the team for the next few years, but that’s life. It would go on.”

Advertisements

Asked if he feels extra motivation to win the treble with Thiago before his departure Flick added: “I have this feeling with every single member of the team.

“After the double, everyone is really hot and motivated to hit everything in them again in the next few weeks.”

With attention turning to a replacement for Thiago if he departs, Flick declared: “I’ll discuss the squad planning with Hasan Salihamidzic and his team. We are in close contact.

“Currently the focus is only on the Champions League. I therefore do not want to submit any water level reports.”

Thiago Alcantara just one step from joining Liverpool

Advertisements

Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara is on the verge of joining Premier League champions Liverpool after stalling over signing a contract extension at Bayern Munich, according to a report in Bild on Friday.

The paper claims Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wants to sign the playmaker who helped Munich win the Bundesliga title and German Cup double last season, but the clubs have yet to agree a transfer fee.

According to NS, Liverpool are not willing to pay more than 25 million euros ($28.5 million), while Bayern want around 40 million euros for the 29-year-old.

Earlier this week, there were widespread reports that Alcantara’s house in Munich is already up for sale.

With a year left on his contract, Alcantara has stalled on signing an extension, but Bayern clearly want to keep him.

Advertisements

“We negotiated with him and granted his wishes, but it looks like he wants to do something new at the end of his career,” Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in early July.

Alcantara joined Bayern in 2013, when newly-arrived head coach Pep Guardiola started three years in charge by declaring “Thiago or nothing” in terms of new signings.

He won the Champions League under Guardiola in 2010/11 with Barcelona and since joining Bayern, Alcantara has won the Bundesliga title in each of his seven seasons, lifting the German Cup four times.

He has made 231 appearances for Bayern, scoring 31 goals and creating 37 more.

Bayern chief confirms Thiago will depart this summer

Thiago has made 230 appearances for Bayern since his move from Barcelona in 2013
The 29-year-old, who is a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, moved to Bayern in 2013 and has been a serial winner in the years since.

Speaking to Bild, Rummenigge said: “He is a top boy on and off the pitch.

”We had serious negotiations with him and fulfilled all of his wishes. But it looks like he might want to do something new again at the end of his career.

”We don’t want to lose him for free.

“We never had any contact with Liverpool. If he wants to go there, we will have to deal with it.”

Rummenigge also revealed that Bayern have no intention to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz, who has strongly been linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks.

He added: “I’ll be very clear: We won’t be financially able to sign Havertz this year. Not just FC Bayern, but all of Europe are currently facing major financial challenges as long as it is not possible to play in front of spectators again.

“[Whether he goes abroad] is a decision that Bayer Leverkusen and the player have to make. To be honest, I’m the same as Rudi Völler as I hope Havertz stays in Leverkusen for at least another year. Because we are interested in competing for his signature.”
