Canada demands huge fine from Facebook over Privacy mislead claims.

Facebook has agreed to pay a Can$9 million (US$6.5 million) fine for making false or misleading claims about its privacy settings, Canada’s competition watchdog announced Tuesday.

An investigation of the social media network’s practices from 2012 to 2018 found that the company gave Canadians the impression that users could control who saw their personal information on Facebook and Messenger.

But it allowed their data to be shared with third party developers, the Competition Bureau said in a statement.

“Canadians expect and deserve truth from businesses in the digital economy, and claims about privacy are no exception,” said competition commissioner Matthew Boswell.

He noted that Facebook had vowed publicly to stop the practice in 2015 but continued to allow third-party access to its users messages and posts until 2018.

As part of the settlement, Facebook has agreed not to make false or misleading representations about the disclosure of personal information, and pay the Competition Bureau’s Can$500,000 investigation costs.

The company has about 24 million users in Canada.

In February, Canada’s privacy commissioner took Facebook to court for violating privacy laws. The company has called it overreach and has asked a judge to quash the case.

Facebook’s new development will shock you.

Facebook will allow users in the United States and Canada to transfer photos and videos to a rival tech platform for the first time – a step that could assuage antitrust concerns by giving users an option to easily leave the company’s services, the social media network said on Thursday.

The tool lets Facebook users transfer data stored on its servers directly to another photo storage service, in this case Google Photos – a feature known as data portability.

U.S. and Canadian users will be able to access the tool through their Facebook accounts starting Thursday. The function has already been launched in several countries including in Europe and Latin America.

It allows the social media company to give users more control over their data and respond to U.S. regulators and lawmakers who are investigating its competitive practices and allegations it has stifled competition.

The U.S. launch also comes ahead of a hearing set up by the Federal Trade Commission on Sept. 22 to examine the potential benefits and challenges of data portability. Control of data that hurts competition has become a critical topic in the antitrust debate in the United States and Europe.

Facebook’s Director of Privacy and Public Policy Steve Satterfield said over the past couple of years, the company heard calls from policymakers and regulators asking it to facilitate choice, make it easier for people to choose new providers and move their data to new services.

“So it really is an important part of the response to the kinds of concerns that drive antitrust regulation or competition regulation,” Satterfield told Reuters in an interview.

He said the company would be open to participating in the FTC hearing if the agency approaches them.

Data portability is a requirement under Europe’s privacy law called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California’s privacy law called the California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA).

Also, Democratic Senators Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Mark Warner of Virginia along with Republican senator Josh Hawley of Missouri introduced a bill, known as the ACCESS Act, in October, which requires large tech platforms to let their users easily move their data to other services.

Satterfield said Facebook hopes to eventually allow users to move key data such as their contacts, friend lists etc onto another platform in a way that protects user privacy.

Facebook developed its data portability tool as a member of the Data Transfer Project – which was formed to allow web users to easily move their data between online service providers whenever they want – and counts Facebook, Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft, Twitter and Apple among its contributors.

Members of the project are also looking at letting users transfer data such as emails, playlists and events in the future, the company said.

On a call with academics and policy experts from the fields of competition and privacy on Wednesday, Facebook said it is moving deliberately on data transfer partnerships with third-parties to avoid a repeat of the Cambridge Analytica incident.

The now defunct British political consulting firm harvested the personal data of millions of Facebook users without their consent and used it for political advertising.

Beautiful women, Choose your path wisely, Social media validation leads you no where, cos all dem singing your praise in your comment section will train their daughters to be everything BUT your kinda woman, theres no real love out here, the number of followers u gat is equals to the number of monitoring spirits watching and waiting to see you fail. Update: Reject social media bill – Group tells Senate.

Ahead of the public hearing in Abuja tomorrow, Monday, March 9 for the Social Media Bill (SMB), over 60 rights advocacy groups under the aegis Action Group on Free Civic Space have asked the nation’s lawmakers to throw out the bill. The bill, Protection From Internet Falsehoods, Manipulations and Other Related Matters Bill 2019, is sponsored by Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (APC, Niger East). But the groups contend that the bill contains provisions that run contrary to the constitutional guaranteed freedom of speech and fair comment protected under national laws. Also, they insist that the bill reproduces rules and regulations already covered by existing laws like the Cyber Crime Act 2015, Terrorism (prevention) Act 2011, Penal Code, National Human Rights Commission Act, etc., just as they noted further that numerous law enforcement mechanisms for curbing cyber crimes already exist.Addressing the media at the weekend, Victoria Ohaeri, legal practitioner and coordinator Spaces for Change asked Nigerians to bluntly discard the bill for its obnoxious nature in stifling freedom and rights of individuals and organisations, arguing further that the language used in framing offenses is overbroad with the potential to criminalise vast swaths of honest expressions, services, and conduct. The group expressed apprehension about the real reasons behind the bill, disclosing that so far not less than 279 cases of clampdown on human freedoms in Nigeria from 2015 till date, with 75 incidents of journalists arrested and assaulted on account of their journalistic duties have been recorded, including 9 media houses either attacked or shut down for publishing or airing content critical of government activities. The group wants the government to strengthen the capacities of existing law enforcement agencies statutorily as well as accelerate the implementation of existing cyber crime laws and policies.“In the light of all the well-founded fears, the Action Group on Free Civic Space, says a big ‘No’ to this bill and urges the Nigerian Senate to reject this bill in its entirety. Doing so is not only in public interest, but also promotes an enabling environment for citizens to freely engage governance in democratic conversations.“Our group represents a loose network of 66 organisations, student unions, social movements and active citizens across Nigeria, working on different thematic issues, but committed to ensuring that government regulation in the name of national security does not shrink the civic space in Nigeria.” The group submitted.

COVID-19: Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey says he need to re evaluate his plans on mingling with Africans.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Twitter, Jack Dorsey has cancelled his plan to relocate to Africa for up to six months in 2020. Jack described his tweets about moving to Africa as “a mistake”.
In November 2019, after visiting Africa on a month-long trip, Dorsey tweeted:-

“Sad to be leaving the continent … for now. Africa will define the future (especially the bitcoin one!). Not sure where yet, but I’ll be living here for 3-6 months mid-2020. Grateful I was able to experience a small part.”

However, Dorsey has now said that he needs to re-evaluates his plans about living in Africa due to the Coronavirus outbreak amongst other things

He said this while speaking at an investor conference sponsored by Morgan Stanley.

“When I tweeted about my intention to spend a few months in Africa this year, I made a mistake and should have provided more context about why.

The continent will be one of the most populated in the next 20-30 years, and room for tech innovation there is incredible, but in light of COVID-19 and everything else going on I need to reevaluate.

Either way, we’ll continue to pursue opportunities in Africa.” Dorsey said.

Coronavirus aside, Dorsey risks being replaced as Chief Executive Officer of the company he co-founded due to the new activist investors that are currently rooting for his removal.

News reports last week said Elliott Management, the activist hedge fund founded by billionaire Paul Singer, a major Republican political supporter, has acquired nearly 5% in Twitter and is now pushing for the removal of Dorsey as CEO, and has nominated four members to Twitter’s board.

The firm pushed for the change stating that Dorsey’s attention is divided between running Twitter and his financial transactions startup Square, and that Dorsey intends to live part of each year in Africa.

Dorsey said he remained capable of managing the two San Francisco-based tech firms.

“I have enough flexibility in my schedule to focus on the most important things and I have a good sense of what is critical on both companies,” he said.

See reactions after Glory Osei deactivate her Twitter account

In October 2019, a series of accusations trailed Glory Osei and her husband Muyiwa Folorunso.

The couple who cofounded Divergent Enterprise was called out on social media by former employees for their alleged high-handedness, allegations of scam business ventures and poor treatment of former staff as well as maintenance of a toxic work environment.

Osei, who says she is a “negotiation and international procurement expert” is also accused of posing as a single woman on social media. Osei often states her strong dislike for men and “Nigerian married women”. It came as a shock when it was revealed that she married Folorunso in 2016.

Osei, in a series of tweets and a separate statement she published on her Medium page, denied running Ponzi schemes as businesses. According to her, the allegations were the handiwork of disgruntled ex-staff trying to bring her down.

In the wake of the allegations that trailed Divergent Enterprises, Osei released a long thread on Twitter trying to justify herself and defend Divergent Enterprise.

Though it has been months that the allegations surfaced, social media users are not one to forget and from time to time, she still receives backlash.

It now appears that Osei may have caved into the pressure from social media as she has deactivated her Twitter account, an action some have attributed to her having “small shame.”

This comes after she made a post on Twitter but many users of the microblogging platform dredged up the scandal and began to bully her.

Following the negative trail, she deactivated her Twitter account.

Osei appears to be more active on Instagram since the Twitter drama and here i=are some reactions to her deactivating her Twitter account.

Social media regulations not stopping – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has stated that the federal government will be moving on with its plan to regulate social media.

Lai Mohammed who disclosed this weeks after he denied the existence of a bill for the regulation of social media in an interview with an international news platform, said they have already contacted two major platforms; Facebook and Google.

He told newsmen in Abuja yesterday February 20, that their aim is to ensure that damages are not done to the country through the social media.

“We are pushing ahead with our plan to sanitize the social media, working with stakeholders. By March 2, 2020, we will inaugurate a stakeholders committee that will deliberate and recommend the way forward.

“We are also planning a major international conference that will bring together the tech companies, media practitioners, policy makers and others as part of efforts to tackle this growing canker-worm

“Last week, I met with representatives of Google and Facebook for the same purpose. The situation is dire, and no nation that values its peace, security and stability will allow an irresponsible use of the social media.

“There has been a spike in the dissemination of fake news and the use of disinformation in recent times. This is not accidental: Fake news, disinformation and hate speech have become the weapons of choice to create tension in the polity and destabilise the country.

“And those behind them, the naysayers, are not about to relent. Those behind this campaign of fake news and disinformation have also deployed new tactics, top of which is the recycling old news items and videos.

“For some people, the 2019 elections are not over. They are stuck in the pre-election mode. And they must continue to use these weapons to put Nigeria on edge.”

Lai Mohammed also revealed plans of floating a new ‘communication regulations’ which will record all calls, monitor WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook.

“Another good example is the video of the over 400 young men suspected to be Boko Haram members who were intercepted in Abia State in 2014.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed

“About two weeks ago, the video came back into circulation, creating panic in the polity. The intention of those behind it is simple: to create tension and panic in the country.”

He pointed out some fake news he claimed were passed off through social media and they include; President Buhari will be travelling to the United Kingdom for 20 days before proceeding to Saudi Arabia and Austria; Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi was attacked at Rigasa train station in Kaduna and that the Nigerian Air Force killed 250 Boko Haram insurgents.

Coronavirus: Facebook set to remove fake reports ..

Facebook, world’s biggest social network, says it will start removing false contents aimed at misinforming people about the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement released on its blog, the social media giant said the move was necessary following the declaration of global emergency on the deadly virus by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday.

Facebook stated its support to the ongoing global campaign against the outbreak of the decease would be in three forms.

This, it said, will include: “Limiting misinformation and harmful content, providing helpful information and support, and empowering partners with data tools.”

“As the global public health community works to keep people safe, Facebook is supporting their work in several ways, most especially by working to limit the spread of misinformation and harmful content about the virus and connecting people to helpful information,” the statement read.

“Our global network of third-party fact-checkers are continuing their work reviewing content and debunking false claims that are spreading related to the coronavirus.

“When they rate information as false, we limit its spread on Facebook and Instagram and show people accurate information from these partners. We also send notifications to people who already shared or are trying to share this content to alert them that it’s been fact-checked.

“We will also start to remove content with false claims or conspiracy theories that have been flagged by leading global health organizations and local health authorities that could cause harm to people who believe them. We are doing this as an extension of our existing policies to remove content that could cause physical harm.

“We’re focusing on claims that are designed to discourage treatment or taking appropriate precautions. This includes claims related to false cures or prevention methods — like drinking bleach cures the coronavirus — or claims that create confusion about health resources that are available.

“We will also block or restrict hashtags used to spread misinformation on Instagram, and are conducting proactive sweeps to find and remove as much of this content as we can.”
