Second term: Obaseki-Shaibu Gov’t continues in new party.

Obaseki had defected to the PDP from the All Progressives Congress after he was denied the ruling party’s ticket in the primary election due to intra-party wranglings.

No fewer than four other governors witnessed the inauguration of Edo Governor Godiwn Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu for second term in office.

The inauguration took place at the Tennis Court of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

In attendance at the inauguration which took place on Thursday at the Tennis Court of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, were governors of the Peoples Democratic Party including Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, and Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State.

PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, was also present at the event with some other party officials while Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was represented by a government official.

He later defeated the APC candidate in the September 19, 2020 governorship election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to be re-elected governor of the state.

Speaking at the inauguration, Obaseki promised to consolidate on his first-term achievements.

He said, “We will also rapidly develop our critical energy, housing, digital and road Infrastructure, which provides a framework to drive inclusive growth as well as build the economy and drive industrialization, trade and investment, to solidify our state’s status as the choice investment destination in the country.

“We will preserve the environment and public utilities, to make our state more functional and adapt to the challenges of climate change and rural-urban migration. Our major drive will be the clean and green Edo initiative and sustaining our campaign to plant trees and restore the forest.”

EdoDecide’20: Obaseki, Shaibu begin reelection campaign

The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has promised to make the state the business and economic hub of the country, if he is re-elected as governor in the September 19 polls.

He gave this assurance at the launch of his re-election campaign as well as that of his deputy, Philip Shaibu at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, the state capital on Saturday.

The governor said it was part of his plan to Make Edo Greater Again, which he said is the theme of his campaign.

“The last time, I said let us go further and we have reached where we are today.

“In a post COVID world, a world that is now defined by social distancing by COVID, where everybody has to now maintain their place, we are saying that we will, by working with you, make Edo greater again,” he said.

“Our message is one of hope and one for the future. The MEGA theme which we have adopted will focus on how to improve governance”.

“We are going to be introducing a lot of technology. We are going to make sure that programmes we are starting particularly with agriculture, youth employment, we are going to insist that we are going to continue in that path.

“Edo will be the business and economic hub of the country.

“We will be because we believe that God has given us everything to become one of the greatest states in this country,” Obaseki said.

Also top on the list of the governor is the restoration of electricity in the state.

According to him, a new plan is underway to revive the power project which had failed earlier.

“I’m sure you are seeing what we are doing with electricity. We invested in Azura, 450 megawatts, that power was put into the grid and now we are darkness in Edo State.

“I have now gone again to look for another set of investors. We invested in another plan and by next month by the grace of God, it would have been completed and we will have electricity in this city.

“I want to assure you that with me and my Deputy, you have two people who are ready to put their lives on the line for you,” he said.

Obaseki is campaigning for a second term in office on the platform of a new party, the Peoples Democratic Party following his defection from the All Progressives Congress, with which he won his first term.

According to the party, his re-election bid is on the strength of the work he has done in the last three years.

The governor thanked the PDP for accepting him into the party.

“When I was thrown out in the rain, and the political storm you gave me the umbrella to shield me, they gave us that umbrella to shield us,” he said.

“To these gallant, trustworthy, members of our National Working Committee, on behalf of the Edo people, I say thank you.

“Now that we have been given the official mandate, we will see what we will do.

“Four years ago, we made a promise to you that we are going to transform Edo State that Edo is the heartbeat of Nigeria and the transformation of the state will lead to the transformation of Nigeria and by the grace of God, that is beginning to happen and it will happen in this election.

“This mandate that has been given to us is simple. What you are saying is, you like what you have seen in the last four years, please go back and continue with what you have done.

“In the last four years, we put our people first and nothing else mattered more than our people. And because we were working for our people, God Almighty has supported us”.

Edo crisis will be resolved soon – Shaibu tells journalists.

…2020 will be the most peaceful election

Edo State deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, yesterday, urged members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Edo State Council, not to be disturbed by the happenings within the All Progressives Congress in the state, saying they will fizzle out within the shortest time.

He gave the assurance during his annual get-to-gether breakfast party for newsmen at his Aideyan residence in Benin City.

Shaibu said the 2020 Edo State governorship election will be very peaceful and Governor Obaseki will be re-elected into office for the second time while those currently flexing their muscles would join them to celebrate his victory at the poll.

“By the grace of God 2020 will be the most peaceful election and the victory of Obaseki shall be seamless. Do not worry about all the disturbances you are hearing, it will calm soon.

“And those characters that are flexing muscles, we know them, they will join. We are family members, they underated the governor and did not know he is man of strong will”, he said.

Commending the Journalists for their unflinching support for this present administration, Shaibu said their inputs are still needed to move the state forward.

“I want to thank all of you for being part of this success story because when they are talking about the success of this government, all of you will be remembered for having supported the government.

“So, on this effort that we have put in place and all the achievements that we have had; it is not because we are superhuman but because we are supported.

“And I want to continue to count on that support and reassure you that Edo State will continue to be forward ever and backward never.

“And those things that make Edo State to be an autopilot in terms of development, we shall continue to put them in place‎ and if there are other things you feel we can do, you know we are always open, let us know because for us to continue doing those good things we must rely on your input”, Shaibu said.

The deputy governor recounted his past experiences he had in the prison and the roles Journalists played in his release and promised to always set a day out to appreciate them.

“It is another 20th day of December and you know we always celebrate ourselves and thank God for his mercies and protection for our lives all through the year.

“This is our unique way of saying thank God for giving us protection. And also to appreciate all of you.

“Everywhere I go to ,I always identify with the press because of what they did for me when I needed them most.

“If that journalist had not revealed that there were still some young men after Gani Fawehinmi and others were released from Gusau Prison, then maybe I will not be alive today.

“We would have been executed during the military but that pen that he put to paper saved our lives.
“So, you can see I do not have any choice that to celebrate all of you that are here today”, he said.

Oshiomhole warned by Kinsmen over denigrating Philip shaibu.

…says violence can only compound his problems

Kinsmen of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has warned him against denigrating office of the Edo State Deputy Governor, presently occupied by Hon Philip Shaibu.

The Oshiomhole’s kinsmen under the auspices of Estako Solidarity Forum (ESF) said the constant attack on the office of Deputy Governor was an affront on Governor Godwin Obaseki and Edo people at large.

Oshiomhole had on Friday launched fresh attack on Shaibu saying “Let me send a message to Philip about his propensity for violence. If he is not careful, his case will that of he who rides on the back of a tiger. Where does it end?

“Violence will not take him anywhere. It can only compound his problems.”

But National Coordinator of ESF, Comrade Seidu Momoh, said Oshiomhole’s comment showed he is venting his frustration that his plot to use Shaibu to destabilise Obaseki’s administration has hit the rock.

Comrade Momoh said Oshiomhole should be thankful to Shaibu for helping to stabilise his administration for eight years.

Momoh stated that the suspension of Oshiomhole from the APC at his own Ward was a testimony that the people are now aware of what he truly represents.

He said the entire Uzairue clan and Estako at large would not sit and allow Oshiomhole humiliate their son who is the highest political office holder in Edo North senatorial district.

According to him, “We are here to warned Oshiomhole to stop calling the Edo Deputy Governor a violent person.

“Oshiomhole did his tenure peacefully and there was no trouble. Shaibu helped him to succeed throughout the eight years.

“Is it now that he has been politically emasculated that he wants the world to believe Shaibu is a violent person.

” Shaibu was critically injured during the fight to wrest the Edo Assembly from the grip of the PDP and Oshiomhole became the greatest beneficiary. There are several other things Shaibu helped Oshiomhole achieved and at that time, he was not a violent person because it suited Oshiomhole’s quest to achieve more political power.”

Update: IGP orders APC rally suspension in Benin.

…shaibu says no security can be guaranteed

The Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, has directed the suspension of All Progressives Congress (APC) rally scheduled for Benin on Friday to welcome former gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who is planning to defect with his followers to the APC.

The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, told reporters at a press conference in Abuja that the IGP had communicated the order to him in a letter, saying the police chief was told that the security of attendees coming for the rally could not be guaranteed.

IGP orders suspension of APC rally in Edo

According to the Deputy Governor, who said the rally was a mere disguise to disrupt public peace, he received the letter suspending the rally at about 5 pm at the Police Headquarters in Abuja.

He expressed regret that the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, was leading the campaign to great division within the party.

He said Oshiomhole, who has been suspended from the party in the state, has no say in decisions taken in the state, insisting Governor Godwin Obaseki, as state party leader, is the only one authorized to do so according to the party constitution.

The IGP had earlier granted permission to the Edo State APC to hold its mega rally to receive Ize-Iyamu and over 30,000 PDP members into the state.

Obaseki had said that he was not aware of any APC rally in the state, just as the purportedly suspended state chairman Anselm Ojezua said neither the state governor nor other leaders of the party were aware of the rally, urging members of the APC in the state not to have anything to do with the event.

Bitter truth that Oshiomhole revealed about Philip shaibu said “this is how shaibu betrayed me”..

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, on Tuesday, lamented the political crisis rocking Edo State and the alleged betrayal of the deputy governor of the state, Philip Shaibu.

Oshiomhole shared his feelings in Iyamoh, his country home when supporters paid him a solidarity visit.

The APC chair expressed disgust over the crisis that has engulfed the party in Edo and blamed Shaibu and some other persons from his Local Government Area, who he claimed betrayed him.

Addressing his supporters, Oshiomhole urged the people to continue to embrace peace and not allow themselves to be used for the wrong reasons because of money just as he also advised them to continue to support the government of President Muhammadu Buhari who he said stands for truth and justice.

Shaibu was at the centre of a recent altercation between youths in Iyamho and suspected thugs allegedly brought to the community during the recent convocation in Edo University, Iyamho in Etsako West Local Government Area.

Oshiomhole said, “It is about the truth, we have a president who believes in the truth, who believes in fairness, who believes in justice, who believes that government should fight for the poor.

“There is nothing I have done in life that I didn’t have to fight but as you can see by the special grace of God there is no fight that I was forced into that I have not prevailed because I do not go out of my way to look for trouble. I actually do my best to make peace but if it fails, God will give the enablement to stand and defend the truth.

“The only thing I will say today to anyone who is here, who is an agent of my son; when I talk of my son, I’m talking of Philip Shiabu, who now thinks that his own political future requires that he attacks me and import thugs to disgrace me in my village.

“The Hausas have a saying that when people are possessed and they do things like that, just say, ‘God take control.’ Supposing I was dead after 2016 and somebody tells me that my son Philip will organise people to attack my house or to attack my village, to disrupt the convocation, maybe my body will be turning in heaven and I will not believe but the fact that I’m alive to see someone who did not win his own (polling) booth because his own people in his own village in his own community of Jattu did not want him because they apparently know him better than I do. But I stood by him, I stood for him and he became the deputy governor.

“If all that transpired now is to use that power to humiliate me but God didn’t allow it. As you can see, who can fight the battle? It is only God so I leave the burden of guilt to them and I will not repay evil with evil. I will stand on the path of peace, I will stand on the path of unity. I will stand on the path of justice because I know that God in heaven will never allow the evildoer to prevail.

“I’m very happy that God has given me good health and that I can see some people who fought me in 2007 and God gave me victory and from victory I made them commissioners, I gave them jobs, I assisted them whenever they were in need. That I’m alive to see them because of a small pot of pepper soup calling for signatures to say Oshiomhole should not be.(sic)”
