Uighur Abuse: China Sanction US Politicians

Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio among those targeted days after US sanctioned Chinese officials over alleged abuses in Xinjiang.

China has announced retaliatory sanctions against a group of United States politicians, including Republican Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, days after Washington blacklisted a number of Chinese politicians for alleged human rights abuses of the Uighur minority.

Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the measures – which also targeted Republican Congressman Chris Smith, the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China and Sam Brownback, the US ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom – would begin on Monday.

Hua did not elaborate on what the “corresponding sanctions” would entail.

Last week, the US imposed visa bans and asset freezes on several Chinese officials, including the Communist Party chief in Xinjiang, Chen Quanguo, over the alleged abuses in the western region.

“We urge the US to immediately withdraw its wrong decision, and stop any words and actions that interfere in China’s internal affairs and harm China’s interests,” Hua said.

“China will make a further response depending on the development of the situation.”

China’s move comes as relations between the world’s two biggest economic powerhouses have slumped in recent years.

Washington and Beijing have traded barbs and sanctions on a slew of issues, from trade to more recent spats over the coronavirus pandemic, a security law in Hong Kong, and Chinese policies in Tibet and Xinjiang.

Witnesses and human rights groups say that China has rounded up more than one million Uighurs and other Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang in a vast brainwashing campaign aimed at forcibly homogenising minorities into the country’s Han majority.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last week the US was acting against “horrific and systematic abuses” in the region including forced labour, mass detention and involuntary population control.

China rejects the accusations, but it has acknowledged sending Uighurs to “vocational education centres” to learn Mandarin and job skills in a bid to steer them away from “terrorism” and separatism.

Members of the Uighur diaspora say their relatives have been arrested for seemingly innocuous acts such as sending Ramadan greetings to friends or downloading popular music.

The US sanctions came after a new book by John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, alleged that the president spoke approvingly of his Chinese counterpart’s explanation of “why he was basically building concentration camps” to intern Uighurs during a G20 meeting in Osaka in 2019 that was attended only by interpreters.

Bolton wrote that the US interpreter said that Trump spoke approvingly of the camps.

Politicians are corrupting Court – Clarke

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Robert Clarke, has insisted that politicians contribute majorly to the problem of governance in the country.

Speaking during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he decried that politicians have continued to corrupt the judicial arm of the government.

He said, “Judiciary is not a problem; judiciary is an institution that we need whether we like it or not, and it is the only force in the country today that one can still rely upon.

“Politicians are our problem; as I have said before in one of my interviews here that the politicians are corrupting the court; they are corrupting the judges and there is nothing we can do”.

Clarke believes the system itself is corrupt and the judiciary has a self-cleansing institution which is the Federal Judicial Service Commission which has the Chief Justice of Nigeria as its chairman.

He explained that the commission has the responsibility of sanctioning erring judges, but based on petitions received.

A Faulty Constitution?
The senior advocate decried the situation where two judges of coordinate jurisdictions give different judgements on political cases.

“It is the rascality we think should not creep into the judiciary, but I still hold it that these events have been created by politicians,” he stressed.

Clarke also faulted the system of governance in the country, saying the 1999 Constitution was the problem of Nigeria.

“This Constitution allows power to be given to individual governors or Mr President to the extent that as soon as they get into the position of responsibility, their personal ego takes over and there is no instrument that can stop them except impeachment and how do you get impeachment when virtually all members of the House are under the portfolio of the governor?” he questioned.

The SAN added, “So, it is the system that is wrong. When you spend billions of naira to get the nomination for a gubernatorial election in a party or when campaigning as a president, you have to traverse the whole of Nigeria; you don’t need such a system.

“It is too expensive; we cannot afford it. We have to change it.”

Orji Uzor Kalu get executive visitations amid prison release. [Photos]

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan led other senators to the residence of Abia lawmaker Orji Uzor Kalu who was released from prison this week.

Recall with NobleReporters that the Chief Whip of the upper legislative chamber regained freedom on Wednesday, June 3, months after being jailed following his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 36 counts of money laundering to the tune of N7.1 billion.

Others on the senate who visited Orji Uzor Kalu include Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe and Deputy Whip, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.

[Nigeria] We demand re-trial – EFCC fights after Court set Kalu free

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, said it is prepared for re-trial of former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu , his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited, and Jones Udeogu, a former Director of Finance and Account of Abia State Government as directed by the Supreme Court on Friday.

The anti- graft agency said this in a statement by Dele Oyewale, its head of media and publicity, while reacting to the judgment of the Supreme Court judgment which nullified the trial and sentencing of Kalu and Udeogu to 12 and 10 years jail terms respectively over N7.6 billion fraud early in the day.

Justices of the apex court had in the unanimous verdict said Justice Mohammed Idris, who convicted Kalu and others, had been elevated to the Court of Appeal before the judgment and therefore out of jurisdiction when he delivered the judgment.

“The EFCC considers the judgment of the apex court as quite unfortunate. It is a technical ambush against the trial of the former governor.

“The Commission is prepared for a fresh and immediate trial of the case because its evidences against Kalu and others are overwhelming.

“The corruption charges against Kalu still subsist because the Supreme Court did not acquit him of them.

“The entire prosecutorial machinery of the EFCC would be launched in a fresh trial where justice is bound to be served in due course.”

[Nigeria] PMB pays tribute to Late President Yar’Adua

President Muhammadu Buhari has extolled the virtues of late former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who also served as Governor of Katsina State for eight years, saluting his honest and sincere service to the country.

Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, said President Buhari made his feelings known as Nigerians observed the 10th anniversary of the death of the former president.

The President said: “Despite our political differences, President Yar’Adua was unarguably a patriot because of his passion for the masses and his reversal of policies he believed were hurting ordinary Nigerians.

“Every leader should be given the credit that he deserves, whether you agree with President Yar’Adua politically or not, I must say that history will always record his honest and sincere service to the country.

“As we remember President Yar’Adua today, let us emulate his patience and gentle nature so that we don’t introduce toxicity into our politics where opponents perceive each other as enemies.

“Let me also use this occasion to extend my prayers and goodwill to his family, and Katsina State Government on the 10th anniversary of his demise. May Allah continue to bless and comfort his gentle soul.

Comparing Buhari to Obasanjo is like comparing Count Dracula to Mother Theresa – FFK speaks. [Nigeria]

Femi Fani-Kayode has spoken against the comparison of the administration of President Buhari to that of ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Femi Fani-Kayode who served as minister of aviation in the Obasanjo administration stated that Buhari has incurred debts for Nigeria which were cleared by Obasanjo.

He also stated that all that was achieved by Nigeria under Obasanjo have been turned into the opposite by Buhari

”Comparing PMB to OBJ is like comparing Count Dracula to Mother Theresa. OBJ united Nigeria, PMB divided her. OBJ brought peace, PMB brought war. OBJ brought prosperity, PMB brought poverty. OBJ brought life, PMB brought death. OBJ brought hope, PMB brought despair

OBJ paid off our foreign debt, Buhari indebted us to the tune of $30 billion and turned us into Africa’s biggest debtor & beggar. OBJ solved our problems, PMB created them. OBJ brought restoration, PMB brought degeneration. OBJ brought us pride, Buhari brought us shame

OBJ brought us good success, PMB brought us stark failure. OBJ loved all Nigerians and treated them equally, Buhari loves only northerners and treats all others like field hands and slaves. OBJ saw Nigeria as a nation, PMB sees her as a conquered territory

OBJ led the best, most successful, most intelligent, most enlightened & most productive cabinet & Govt. in the history of Nigeria whilst PMB leads the worst, most destructive, most savage, most ignorant & most corrupt cabinet & Govt. in the history of Africa

OBJ fought terror & despised terrorists, PMB rewards terror & pampers terrorists. OBJ was a leader, PMB is a ruler. OBJ was a lion, PMB is a mouse. Comparing the two is like comparing night & day or chalk & cheese or heaven & hell: it makes absolutely NO sense!” he wrote

[Nigeria] Only God will Judge we holders of Public Office – Dino Melaye

Dino Melaye has stated that Nigerian leaders have failed the country over the inability to feed the people during the lockdown period declared to curb coronavirus spread.

Dino Melaye who was a former senator representing Kogi West stated that all public office holders both former and present will be judged by the God of the poor.

According to him, a country that has sold crude oil for 64 years shouldn’t have a problem feeding its citizens.

He wrote on Twitter: “Everyone who held and is holding any political office in Nigeria whether elective or appointed including me have failed.

“We sold crude oil for 64 years, but we couldn’t feed our citizens for just two weeks of lockdown!! Well, the god of the poor will judge us all. It’s time to reboot.”

[Nigeria] Obasanjo-Atiku’s Tenure and Buhari’s Govt impossible to compare – PDP tackles APC.

The Peoples Democratic Party, on Sunday, declared that the All Progressives Congress, APC, lacks the parameter to compare the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and that of President Muhammadu Buhari.

PDP made the remark in response to APC’s claim that ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar admitted that Obasanjo administration was short-sighted and failed to diversify Nigeria’s economy.

APC’s spokesperson, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, had stated this in a statement where he commended Atiku for suggesting how Buhari should improve Nigeria’s economy.

However, PDP berated the ruling party for its comment, stressing that APC has “reversed all our national gains in a space of five years.”

The former ruling party stated this in a statement titled: “You Lack Parameters to Compare Obasanjo/Atiku Tenure with Buhari’s”

The statement signed by its spokesperson, Kola Ogbondiyan reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a knee-jerk reaction by the dysfunctional APC to the well-received suggestions by former Vice President and PDP’s candidate in the 2019 Presidential election, Atiku, on how to revamp our ailing economy.

“While the PDP had chosen not to allow the fizzling APC to distract us from our focus, particularly in finding solutions for the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot keep quiet and allow those who had reversed all our national gains in a space of five years, to continue to engage in distortions, outright lies and appropriation of projects executed by the PDP to continually spit on the memories of Nigerians.

“It is sad that a patriotic and non-partisan rescue effort by Atiku was met with insults, animus and aspersions by an administration under which Nigeria is collapsing economically, just because it lacks the required competence and brilliance for modern governance.

“This is a government under which our nation has become the poverty capital of the world; our foreign debts have quintupled from $7 billion in 2015 to $30 billion today; our once highly rated banking sector is now shedding its workforce.”

Adeleke, Nigeria’s own Mike Tyson Defeat PDP in Court.

A Federal High Court in Lagos State has ruled against the 2019 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and Bukola Saraki, his campaign director in the 2019 general election over unauthorised use of the photograph of Mrs. Amuda Adeleke, Lagos-based trader, on their campaign billboard.

NobleReporters reported late last year that Mrs Adeleke, a Lagos-based trader, had dragged Saraki who was the Director-General of the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation during the 2019 General Election, before the court for using her picture on campaign billboards without her consent.

Also joined in the suit marked FHC/L/CS/./19, were the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party’s presidential flag bearer, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Mr Peter Obi, his running mate.

Justice Ayokunle Faji, who has been in charge of matter, made a monetary award of N5m to Mrs. Adeleke, yesterday, explaining that the money would be jointly and severally paid by Atiku, Saraki, the PDP, and Peter Obi, Atiku’s running mate during the election.

Atiku and Obi lost the election to the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidates, Muhammadu Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The trader had told the court that the unauthorised use of her photograph for the party’s campaign caused her embarrassment.

“All my friends who saw the campaign billboard said it portrayed me as a woman stricken with poverty who had lost all hope and was prepared to commit suicide,” she said.

She asked the court to award N45m against Atiku, Saraki, the PDP and Obi for infringing on her fundamental right to privacy as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.

However, after ruling in her favour, the judge, instead, awarded N5m against the defendants

Politicians started taking deliveries of Toyota Camry 2020 model cars. {Reactions}

The Nigerian House of Representatives has started taking the deliveries of the Toyota Camry 2020 model cars acquired for members as official cars.

In a report, some of these exotic automobiles were spotted by their correspondent at different parking lots within the National Assembly Complex, on Thursday, March 26, 2020. N.Rs learnt

Though the buildup for the delivery of the cars spans to a month and few weeks back, the delivery comes at a time when the country is battling the Coronavirus crisis and as such, Nigerians took to Twitter to blast the move.

On the 5th of February, 2020, legislators held a closed-door where they resolved to purchase 400 units of the exotic car. The House has, however, kept sealed lips on the cost of each unit.

NobleReporters observed that the House procured the V6 Limited Edition variant of the car.

Chairman of the Committee on House Services, Mr. Wale Raji, who confirmed delivery of the cars declined to respond to further enquiries.

A check on the website of Toyota revealed that each of the vehicles – depending on the variant, has a price tag of between US$25,000 to US $35,000, excluding the cost of shipping and custom duties, which is about 100 per cent of the actual cost of each unit.

Orbih, PDP shades Obaseki, APC on poor performance

Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dan Orbih, has again faulted the state multi million naira agricultural project in Sobe, saying the project is a complete failure without any product to show for it.

Orbih, who spoke at a political rally at the residence of the late former Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, ‎Mr. Benson Alegbe, in Owan West Local Government Area of the state, accused the state government of using the project to help a friend.

His said: “They decided to establish a farm at Sobe, close to N1 billion was spent on that farm. I challenge Edo Governor to tell Edo people what has become of that investment. I can tell you that the project is a complete failure. I have visited Sobe, I have been to the farm and all I can see is that somebody in the government house decided to help a friend by committing public funds running into hundreds of millions of naira without any product coming out of the farm.”

He also mocked the PDP members, who defected to the ruling APC, over their perceived plight, saying “They are not in hell, they are not in heaven, they are not in PDP, they are not in APC.”

The Chairman of Edo North PDP leaders’ Forum, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, in his own address at the rally, urged the people of Owan West to eschew political bitterness and work together in unity. “Let us forget about what happened in the past, let us work together so that our children can enjoy what we laboured for. We need to forgive ourselves in whatever way we might have offended ourselves because there is a better tomorrow”, he said.

Edo: APC frowns at Obaseki for rejecting Peace committee

…they could not now be adjudicators

The the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has reacted to Governor Godwin Obaseki’s rejection of the newly-constituted National Reconciliation Committee set up to address the problems bedeviling the party in some states.

Recall that Governor Obaseki in a statement jointly issued by the state Commissioner ‎for Information and Orientation, Paul Ohonbamu and his Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, had rejected Committee because it is allegedly populated by persons with vested interests in the crisis rocking the Edo APC.

The statement sp‎ecifically accused two members of the Committee, the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and Deputy.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Wase of meddling in the altercation between the Edo State Government and the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, saying they could not now be adjudicators on the matter.

But in a statement in Benin City yesterday, the party said it welcome the setting up of the Committee, which was one of the decisions at the last National Executive Committee its (NEC) meeting which had President Muhammadu Buhari in attendance.

The statement signed by Col. David Imuse (rtd.) and Lawrence Okah, Acting Chairman and State Secretary of the APC in Edo State, “dissociates itself from the decision of the governor and his cohorts who no longer see anything good in our great party.

“For quite sometime now, we have cried to the world that Governor Obaseki is the problem the APC has in Edo State but some persons whom he unfortunately brainwashed listen to his lies. However, Edo people, who are the voters, know the truth about Obaseki.

“It will interest President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders of our party that this is the fourth time Governor Obaseki would reject trouble-shooting Committees on Edo State and decisions made by respected institutions in this country.

“First was the decision of the House of Representatives, calling on the governor to issue a fresh proclamation letter after he criminally inaugurated 9 out of 24 members of the State House of Assembly at 9:30pm.

“Governor Obaseki bluntly rejected that decision and accused the respected members of the Green Chambers of carrying out the bidding of Comrade Adam’s Oshiomhole.

“The second was the senate resolution, which also advised the governor to do the right things as earlier directed by the House of Representatives. Again, Governor Obaseki flouted the resolution and went further to get an injunction restraining the NASS from interfering in the crisis situation in the state House of Assembly. Rather than embrace peace like the Governor of Bauchi did, which led to the peace being enjoyed today in the Bauchi state Assembly, Governor Obaseki ‘s ego did not allow him do that. Today, he and his cohorts have dragged the NWC, NASS and the State APC through the courts.

“He had further gone ahead to declare vacant the seats of our 14 House of Assembly members who went to court in total disregard to the pendency of these issues before the court.

“Thirdly, the NWC decided to set up a peace committee headed by the governor of Kano State. Again, Governor Obaseki and his clique went to court to restrain that committee from carrying out its functions. That matter is still before the law court.

“Just a few days ago, our teeming supporters across the nation celebrated the setting up of a National Reconciliation Committee, which was the idea of our party leaders, including President Muhammadu Buhari, at the last NEC meeting. Governor Obaseki has, again, condemned the constitution of the Committee, which is ably led by our respected Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan.

“We are, indeed, aware that this committee was not only set up to look into the crisis in Edo APC but also in other states where we have issues such as Rivers, Ondo, Zamfara, etc. Remarkably, none of the leaders in these states have condemned the Committee but Obaseki who is always speaking from both sides of the mouth about the search for peace in Edo APC.

“We don’t think that former Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo and former Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State defied these reputable institutions, including the party, before they were suspended by the party. It is clear we have a tyrant in Edo as governor.

According to col.imuse and Okah, the actions of Governor Obaseki was not a surprise to the APC in Edo State because the governor and his cohorts have allegedly left the APC in the spirit but are creating confusion to destroy the party in the state and blame their despicable action on Comrade Oshiomhole.

They alleged that “at the moment, Edo State Government House is now venue for meetings of PDP leaders in the state. But we are not worried about that because Governor Obaseki who failed to win his ward and unit during the Presidential election has no electoral prowess to upset the APC in the forthcoming gover election.

“The APC in Edo State expresses its gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for setting up the National Reconciliation Committee. Edo APC looks forward to the Committee’s deliberation in Edo State.
“As a party, we want peace in our state. Therefore, we urge the Committee to disregard the position of the governor on this matter because Obaseki is not the owner of APC in Edo State.

“It is clear that even if our Lord Jesus Christ comes down from heaven to head the Committee, Governor Obaseki will still complain because his soul has left APC. All he wants now is to destroy the APC. But we will resist him no matter how much of the state’s funds he is throwing around in his desperation for a second term.

“Finally, we want to state categorically that, at no time, was our National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, suspended from his ward. It is laughable that Governor Obaseki who does not understand the constitution of the APC will gather his SAs and Commissioners to Government House to announce that they have suspended our leaders, including Comrade Oshiomhole. How can a Governor who lost his ward,

LGA and senatorial district in the last general election, say he has suspended people who won their areas for the APC?

That is laughable.

“Prior to the general election, he made a pronouncement that any government appointee that lost his unit or ward during the election should resign. After the elections, we expected he would be a man of honour to resign after he lost his unit and ward, but he has remained as governor and has been tormenting leaders who won their areas for President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We appeal to our President and other leaders of the party to call Governor Obaseki to order as he is pushing Edo State to a state of anarchy. APC members are being hounded, beaten and maimed in any of their gatherings on the orders of Governor Obaseki. If he intends to leave the party as he had already perfected his plot, he should do so quietly so we can move on.

“We have implicit confidence in our National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and we believe that he will lead Edo State to victory again in 2020”, the statement said.

Every president has cabal of advisers – Garba shehu.

…Insists plan to regulate social media not political

A media aide in the Presidency says that President Muhammadu having advisers around him is not unique to his administration, arguing that every President has a “cabal” of such advisers.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Press Corps at the weekend, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Buhari, Mallam Garba Shehu, said a lot of the people labelled as being part of a “cabal” in the Presidency’s “are successful people who are making extreme sacrifices to even be coming to serve government.

“Every President must have people who advise him. It is not a sin, it is not an offence to have people that you take into confidence,” Shehu said.

“What is the meaning of cabal? I just googled Thesaurus and among many other definitions, what they are saying is that cabal means “conspire, intrigues, mystique, occult, secret”. There is no government in this country that we have had that some people were not accused of being a cabal in that government, and it is because every administration, every President must have a secretariat.

“Elsewhere, they call it ‘Kitchen Cabinet’, but in our own country we are being derogatory and we term them the cabal so that it will tarnish their own good standing.

“In fact, for some of our elites, Buhari is a bad man because you cannot go to him and say give me oil well and he will sign paper and give you.

“So, we understand the game that is playing out and there is always a price, in any case, to pay for that kind of exposure. Even the President himself, the kind of things that are being said of him, if he did not offer himself to serve, some of those things, people would not even have the chance to say them against him. So, we will live with it, we will accept it because it goes with the territory,” he noted.

On the controversy about the plan to regulate social media, the President’s spokesman ruled out a political undertone, explained that “Social media has become a problem for many families because rights of women and children are being abused.

“There is a need to protect vulnerable members of the society. There is a need to protect minorities, whether tribal or religious, in our own country.

“So, it makes sense that you as media stakeholders come around the Minister of Information and Culture and formulate the kind of regulation you want so that it is not that there is top-bottom approach, so that government will not be accused of imposing a regulatory mechanism on the media.

“The Minister is saying come, sit down with me and let us talk about it. And I was told that the day he called on NUJ, they walked out on him. If that the report is true, I think it is very unfortunate. I think we need to come around him and offer media driven solutions so that at the end of it this, the country will have a vibrant and effective social media communication system.

“…It is the one that does not drive children to addiction and that also protects consumers of media content from harmful invasion either of our privacy of addiction for children of commercialism that are profit driven and are taking advantage of our own exposure to a mass communication system.

“I think I will be like to appeal that please give serious consideration to some of these elements and see how the media in the country can work together with government to find communication solutions to a purely communication problem.

“It is not political, the government has no reason to undermine or weaken the mass media… In a country where the mass media are being suppressed, where there is no freedom of expression and information, you find out that the media space tends to decline, it becomes smaller, media houses close down; but the Irony of what is happening in the country is that, while some civil society groups are crying here that freedom of expression is being threatened, we know why they were shouting because they are looking for donors abroad who will send in US dollars for the protection of Hate Speech. That basically it is a selfish thing,” he noted.

Nigerians now understanding the purpose of ‘Hate speech bill’ – Senate

…many now in support

Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, says the controversial hate speech bill is currently receiving massive support from Nigerians. The bill since its introduction into the red chambers, has faced stiff opposition from many Nigerians who believe it is a means to gag members of the opposition.

However in a statement released today, Abdullahi who is sponsoring the bill, says it has so far received massive support from Nigerians across the country.

“I can tell you that the bill is receiving strong support from Nigerians across the country. Notable personalities across various professions are beginning to speak out in support of the bill in the media. This is not to leave out some members of the academia that are rallying support for the bill’s passage by the National Assembly.” he said

He added that only those that are against the unity of Nigeria are against the hate speech bill.

“Like I have always stated, only those who are against the unity of Nigeria will oppose the bill by hiding under guise of protecting ‘Free Speech’. The Hate Speech Bill targets acts of discrimination and absolutely not Freedom of Speech as those with sinister motives who are opposed to the bill are trying to mislead Nigerians into believing. Before Nigeria is consumed by religious and ethnic violence, we must all rise to save the country from people using hate speech for personal gains.” his statement read

Terrorism is the major threat to West African peace and progress – Buhari.

…Terrorist attacks increased by 80% in 2019

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, said that terrorism remained the major threat to the peace and progress of the West African sub-region.

This is even as the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, said that attacks in the region rose by 80 per cent in the first 11 months of 2019 compared to the year 2018.

President Buhari, while speaking during the 56th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Abuja, said that recurring attacks by terrorist groups was a reminder to the sub-region about the urgency to build an enduring security partnership to confront and defeat the evil of cross-border terrorism.

The one-day meeting, according to the ECOWAS Commission, was called to deliberate on issues affecting the region, the political situations and the Action Plan for Regional Security and its financing mechanism, among others.

President Buhari added that it was with great shock and immense pain that he received the news last week of the tragedy that took place in the Tillaberi region of the Republic of Niger where over 33 valiant soldiers and other citizens of the country were brutally massacred in yet another cowardly terrorist attack by enemies of peace and progress.

On regional integration, Buhari reinstated Nigeria’s commitment, stressing the need for the sub-region to always channel its energy towards devising new strategies and initiatives that will accelerate the attainment of the regional aspirations for sustainable peace, security, stability and inclusive economic growth.

“To achieve this, we must put our people at the heart of our policies and actions,” he said.

On his part, the President of the Republic of Niger and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Issoufou Mahamadou, said that the creation of a common area of peace, security and economic integration, is the key to the future of the region.

Mahamadou noted that the region had been hard hit by terrorist attacks which were intensified with every passing day, threatening the many national and regional achievements the region had made.

“We, therefore, hope that the prompt implementation of the recommendations of our extraordinary summit on terrorism held on 14th September, 2019, will enable us to collectively meet this challenge which appears to be an attack by faithless criminals on our dignity and sovereignty,” Mahamadou said.

Also speaking, Brou said it was clear that the recent terrorist attacks in the region and the thought of the many civilian and military victims would only strengthen the region’s resolve to collectively and effectively fight to eradicate the scourge.

“In the first 11 months of 2019, terrorist attacks increased by almost 80 per cent, compared to the same period in 2018 and caused more than 1,800 civilian and military casualties. This situation has led to a humanitarian crisis with the displacement of nearly 2.8 million people and the closure of hundreds of schools,” Brou said.

In his remarks, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mohammed Ibn Chambas, said that the time calls for all to stand together, as well as summon the best values in overcoming the canker that threatens the entire sub-region.

Chambas also said that to definitively defeat and eradicate terrorism, there was need to complement the military and security approaches with developmental approaches that address the root causes of the scourge.

In his presentation, the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Akinwumi Adesina, said the AfDB would support the region in tackling its challenges.

“I applaud the Heads of State and Governments for their leadership to mobilize $1 billion to ensure the region’s security. When leaders decide, things happen. The African Development Bank will be ready to help ECOWAS on this fund, especially to help structure how this fund can be securitized,” he said.
