Ronald Koeman blast PSG’s Di Maria over comment on Messi.

Koeman did express his delight with his team’s performance on the night after Barca came back from two goals down in normal time and then scored three goals in extra time.

Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman has hit out at Angel Di Maria over the PSG forward’s comments suggesting Lionel Messi could join him in Paris next season.

Messi’s contract at Camp Nou expires at the end of the season and PSG have been mentioned as a possible destination, in part because they are one of only a handful of clubs that could afford the Argentine star’s massive wages.

PSG’s sporting director Leonardo has opened the door to a move, telling France Football last month: “Great players like Messi will always be on PSG’s list. But this is of course not the time to talk about it, or to dream about it.”

Di Maria echoed his sporting director’s comments on Wednesday after his side’s 3-0 win over Nimes.

“Yes, yes, I hope so,” Di Maria told Canal Plus of a possible PSG move for his international team-mate. “There are many possibilities. We have to be calm and things will develop.”

Koeman got word of those comments and speaking after Barcelona defeated Granada 5-3 in an extra-time thriller in the Copa del Rey, the Dutch manager accused Di Maria of being disrespectful.

“It seems to me a lack of respect. Someone can be wrong in saying something like that,” Koeman said.

“It is not fair, I do not think it is respectful towards Barca to speak like that of a player who is ours. So many people from PSG talk a lot about Leo, who plays for Barca.

“Besides, we have a tie against them,” Koeman added, referring to the teams’ upcoming Champions League last-16 matchup.

Koeman did express his delight with his team’s performance on the night after Barca came back from two goals down in normal time and then scored three goals in extra time.

“It’s incredible,” Koeman added. “The football is incredible. I think we’ve done well. We had chances to win the game earlier.

“The team has been huge. In the last five minutes of the second half, we scored two goals. Then extra time was incredible

“The first thing that stands out about the team is their mentality. We never stop trying.”

Neymar close to new PSG deal, now for 4 years.

Bechler says the player is ‘very close’ to signing and it could even be announced this week.

Neymar is closing in on a new long-term contract with Paris Saint-Germain, having confirmed earlier this week he is happy at Parc des Princes and wants to stay at the club.

Neymar joined PSG from Barcelona in a controversial world record transfer worth €222m in the summer of 2017, but just two years later he was determined to go back to Camp Nou amid claims that he wanted to reunite with Lionel Messi and regretted ever leaving.

No deal ever materialised at that time, with Barça lacking the financial resources to tempt PSG into selling, nor convincing their own players to move in the opposite direction in a cash-less deal.

Even though it was later rumoured that Barcelona were only going through the motions to appease the various parties, knowing full well a deal wasn’t really possible, Neymar was said to have been so distraught when he learned he wouldn’t be heading back that he cried.

Now, however, things have changed considerably. PSG reached the Champions League final last season, while Barcelona’s spiralling debt and Messi’s uncertain future makes any potential reunion between the pair vastly more likely to be in Paris.

News on an agreement over a new contract comes from Brazilian journalist Marcelo Bechler, who was a major source of information when Neymar agreed to join PSG in the first place back in 2017.

Bechler says the player is ‘very close’ to signing and it could even be announced this week.

The new contract would be for another four years, taking Neymar, who celebrates his 29th birthday on Friday, well into his 30s by the time it is due to expire. His existing deal ends in 2022.

Earlier this week, Neymar told French broadcaster TF1: “I am happy today. I am truly happy. Things have changed a lot. I can’t exactly explain why. But today, I am feeling good. I have adapted. I am more calm and I am more happy.

“I want to stay at PSG. I also want Kylian [Mbappe] to stay. We want PSG to be a great team. I want to continue to play football and be happy, that is the most important thing.”

Southampton finalizes late hour Takumi Minamino loan move.

The move has also enabled Southampton to send Shane Long out on loan to Championship promotion hopefuls Bournemouth.

Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino has completed a sensational loan move to Southampton in the dying embers of January’s transfer deadline day.

The Japan international has agreed to spend the remainder of the season on the south coast as he goes in search of more game time, having struggled to break into Jürgen Klopp’s plans this season.

The transfer window seemed to be drawing to a quiet close, before news broke of the Saints’ pursuit of the 26-year-old with fewer than two hours remaining to seal the deal.

Having passed a last-minute medical, the 11th-hour loan move has been confirmed in a statement on Southampton’s website.

Boss Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “I am very pleased to welcome Takumi to our squad for the rest of this season.

“He will help provide another good attacking option, and is importantly the right profile of player for us. This will give us some additional depth in our squad at an important time, and I am looking forward to beginning work with him on the training pitch.”

Minamino – who only joined Liverpool from RB Salzburg a year ago – has featured 17 times in all competitions this season, but has struggled for starts behind the established front three of Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

However, he has still managed four goals and two assists, and his versatility means he will give the Saints an option out wide and in attacking midfield.

A lack of quality depth would have been a real concern for Hasenhuttl as his side attempt to mount a European challenge in the second half of the season.

The Irishman has never been a regular scorer at St Mary’s, but his hard work and willingness to run the channels had seen him in stay in favour over the past few seasons.

Minamino is Southampton’s only arrival of the January window, while young defender Yan Valery was the second player to leave the club on deadline day.

He’s joined Birmingham City on loan, having been shut out of the first team picture by Kyle Walker-Peters.

Idrissa Gueye shocking Newcastle loan deal rejection.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles is also being name-dropped as a potential target for the Magpies.

Newcastle have failed in their pursuit to sign Idrissa Gueye on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, despite holding initial talks.

Newcastle are in search of a midfielder, but are yet to use the January transfer window to strengthen their squad and are running out of time.

L’Equipe initially reported that Newcastle had made contact over a loan move for the 31-year-old, but the Daily Mail have since confirmed that Gueye has turned down the chance to return to the Premier League with Steve Bruce’s side.

The midfielder was signed by then-PSG manager Thomas Tuchel for a reported £29m fee in summer 2019 and has made 16 appearances this season but has featured in limited capacity, having completed just one full game since October.

Gueye is now struggling to find a regular place in the side under the new management of Mauricio Pochettino, with a change of system taking him out of the side.

Pochettino has been in pursuit of Dele Alli since taking the PSG job, with the England midfielder out of favour at Tottenham.

PSG’s pursuit of Alli has since broken down, however, and is now expected to remain in north London beyond the deadline, which could affect any move for Gueye.

Newcastle have also been linked with a loan move for Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury, but any deal could be dependant on whether the Foxes get an attacking midfielder in before the deadline themselves.

The versatile midfielder is expected to leave on loan before the transfer window slams shut and Newcastle have been in contact over a loan move, as have Leicester and Southampton.

PSG manager, Pochettino test positive for COVID-19.

Pochettino is the latest person at the Parc des Princes to test positive for the virus, following defenders Colin Dagba and Thilo Kehrer, and midfielder Rafinha.

Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino has tested positive for COVID-19 and has now been forced into a period of self-isolation.

It’s been a rollercoaster of a start to life in Paris for Pochettino, who joined on January 2 and needed just 11 days to lift his first trophy, steering PSG to a 2-1 win over Marseille to lift the Trophee des Champions.

For PSG, the hope was that they could carry that momentum over to Ligue 1 to reclaim their usual spot at the top of the table, but they will have to do so without Pochettino as the Argentine must now isolate.

“Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino has tested positive for COVID-19,” a statement on the club’s official website read. “He will therefore respect isolation and is subject to the appropriate health protocol.

“His assistants Jesus Perez and Miguel D’Agostino will take over from tomorrow in Angers.”

PSG currently sit second in Ligue 1, just one point behind leaders Lyon, so Saturday’s meeting with Angers is a great chance for the defending champions to keep up the pressure.

The two sides met back in October, when PSG roared to an emphatic 6-1 victory, but Angers have bounced back since then and currently find themselves in seventh, picking up recent wins over high-flyers Lille and Marseille.

“We’ll have to be ready on Saturday, because it’s a very difficult game against Angers that’s ahead of us,” Pochettino said of the game before his test results came in. “We want to win again, and to do that, we have to be ready.

“We want to be top of the Ligue 1 table and to get there, we’ll have to win. The most important thing is to be consistent in our performances. We’re very happy with the way the players are picking up our concepts. I want to thank them, the staff that we already had here, and the fans who encouraged us before the match.”

Neymar Gets Booked After Showboating in PSG’s 5-0 Demolition of Montpellier

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar was booked during a French league match on the weekend after a heated conversation with the referee, following an attempted rainbow flick.

PSG were one goal and a man up after 38 minutes against Montpellier on Saturday when the Brazilian treated the crowd to a bout of tricks topped off by an audacious attempted rainbow flick.

However, the referee then called Neymar to one side and after a heated discussion with the player, the official booked PSG’s number ten much to his and the crowd’s dismay.

Neymar talked himself into a yellow card after the referee warned him about showboating against 10-man Montpellier.

The Ligue 1 champions would go on to score four more goals, as Neymar shone throughout the match, assisting his side’s fourth strike of the night, as he continues to put in superb performances in the lead up to the Champions League.

Neymar may have rediscovered the best form of his career in recent weeks, with an astonishing 18 goals and assists in his last ten outings for Les Parisiens, but the Brazilian has never gone long without showcasing his trademark, if controversial, flair.

As one of the most divisive figures in football, Neymar often draws criticism for diving or playacting, but Saturday’s rainbow flick antics was not the first time the Brazil international was met with ire following that particular trick.

In the 2015 Copa del Rey final against Athletic Club the forward, then a Barcelona player, attempted the same skill but instead of the referee’s yellow card, he encountered the opposition’s red mist.

It was near the end of the match, unlike the weekend’s rendition in the first half, when Neymar attempted to flick the ball over his opponent’s head before Barcelona saw out the game as 3-1 winners.

Despite the protestations of the Athletic players, Neymar was insistent that this reaction would not deter him in the slightest.

Speaking after the match in 2015, the former La Liga star told Sky Sports: “They can be angry, but it is my way of playing and I have done so for years. Just because others get angry doesn’t mean I am going to change my style of play.”

With all the tricks and flicks pulled out on Saturday, evidently Neymar is a man of his word and the spectacular.

Neymar’s birthday, an unwelcome distraction ..

Neymar will celebrate his birthday in a Paris club on Sunday, a ‘distraction’ two days ahead of a Ligue 1 trip to Nantes, according to Paris St Germain coach Thomas Tuchel.
French sports daily L’Equipe reported that the event would take place in a western Paris club and that the PSG players and a few members of the staff had been invited by the Brazilian, who turns 28 on Wednesday, reports Reuters.
“The substitution of Kylian or Ney’s birthday are distractions, it gives the impression that we are not serious,” Tuchel was quoted as saying by L’Equipe on Sunday.

Paris Saint Germain Star, Neymar JR.

On Saturday, France striker Kylian Mbappe showed his frustration when he was replaced in the 70th minute of a 5-0 win against nine-man Montpellier.
On Neymar’s birthday, Tuchel added: “It gives the impression that we are not 100% focused and professional.
“But things are not either black or white. They become important when we talk about them a lot.”
