Ajax’s Onana gets ‘a year’ ban for ‘doing this’ on field.

This is a terrible setback, for Andre himself but certainly also for us as a club.

Ajax have confirmed that goalkeeper Andre Onana has been suspended by UEFA for 12 months for a doping violation.

The club say the banned substance Furosemide was detected in the Cameroonian keeper’s urine. They say they will appeal the suspension on the grounds that the goalkeeper ingested the substance innocently and unknowingly.

An Ajax statement reads: “The disciplinary body of the European football association, UEFA, has imposed a suspension of 12 months on Andre Onana for a doping violation. After an ‘out of competition’ check on October 30 last year, the goalkeeper found the substance Furosemide in his urine.

“The suspension is effective from today and applies to all football activities, both national and international.”

“Onana and Ajax will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).”

In an attempt to explain how Onana came to ingest the substance, the statement added: “On the morning of 30 October, Onana was feeling unwell. He wanted to take a pill to ease the discomfort.

“Unknowingly, however, he took Lasimac, a drug that his wife had previously been prescribed. Onana’s confusion resulted in him mistakenly taking his wife’s medicine, ultimately causing this measure to be taken by UEFA against the goalkeeper. Furthermore, the disciplinary body of the football association has stated that Onana had no intention of cheating.”

Sporting director Edwin Van der Sar added: “We explicitly renounce performance-enhancing drugs, we obviously stand for a clean sport. This is a terrible setback, for Andre himself but certainly also for us as a club.

“Andre is a top goalkeeper, who has proven his worth for Ajax for years and is very popular with the fans.

“We had hoped for a conditional suspension or for a suspension much shorter than these twelve months, because it was arguably not intended to strengthen his body and thus improve his performance.”

Valencia could bring Onana to Chelsea, See how…

Advertisements

Valencia are considering signing Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga on a two-year loan deal.

The LaLiga club want to sign the Spaniard as a replacement for current keeper Jasper Cillessen – who is linked with a summer exit.

If Valencia can strike a deal with the Premier League side, it is likely to also have an option to buy clause after the two-year loan spell, according to Marca.

The approach from Valencia could be part of a much larger swap deal, which would see Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana join Chelsea and Cillessen replace Onana at Ajax.

Onana has impressed with the Eredivisie side as Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in acquiring the 24-year-old stopper.

Kepa joined the Blues for a world-record fee of £72million for a goalkeeper, as he joined from Athletic Bilbao. He quickly established himself as the number one at Stamford Bridge after he replaced Thibaut Courtois, who left for Real Madrid.

The Spaniard’s future at the club has been in doubt since the turn of the year, as he was dropped for 38-year-old back-up goalkeeper Willy Cabellero.

The Argentine was between the sticks for crucial matches against Manchester United, Tottenham and Bayern Munich.

Whilst Kepa has won his place back in Frank Lampard’s side, doubts still loom over his future at the club.

It has been reported that the goalkeeper now wishes to leave London in search of more minutes as he fights for his place in the Spain national team ahead of the Euros next summer.

Barca & Chelsea target Onana admits he wants to leave Ajax

Advertisements

Andre Onana confirmed he wanted to leave Ajax, saying he was ready “to take a step” amid links with a move to Barcelona.

Onana, 24, has starred during the past four seasons with the Eredivisie giants, where he arrived from Barca in 2015.

The Cameroon goalkeeper has attracted interest from across Europe, with Barcelona, Chelsea and Tottenham among the clubs linked with a move for the shot-stopper.

Onana, who is contracted at Ajax until 2022, said he was ready to make a move.

“Don’t get me wrong, I am very happy with Ajax and I am very grateful to the club,” he told AD on Tuesday.

“It was five great years here, but now my time has come to take a step. We made that appointment last year.

“I don’t yet know what will happen, but my ambitions and agreements are clear.”

Earlier this month, Onana revealed Barca felt like ‘home’ and he would be open to a Camp Nou return .

“It’s hard to say because with Barcelona, I am still in very good relations with the president, the coaches,” Onana told Canal+ Afrique.

“As I said earlier, Barca is my home. If I have to go back, I will go back. But today we are still far from it. I’m the Ajax goalkeeper and we’ll see what happens at the end of the season.

“I only take care of the ball game, what happens at the stadium. The rest are my agents who manage.”

Onana: Barcelona is my home and if I have to go back, I’ll go back

Andre Onana has responded to speculation linking him with a return to Barcelona in the future.

The goalkeeper spent time in Barcelona’s academy before leaving for Ajax in 2015, where he has become Erik ten Hag’s first choice.

“It’s difficult to know,” Onana told Canal+ Sport Africa about his future.

“Barcelona is my home and, if I have to go back, I’ll go back.

“But we’re far off from that.

“I’m the Ajax goalkeeper and we’ll see what happens at the end of the season.”

Ajax goalkeeper Onana open to Barcelona return amid PSG interest

Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana has not ruled out the possibility of returning to Barcelona amid reports that PSG are interested in his services.

According to L’Equipe, the Parisians are keeping tabs on the 24-year-old Cameroon International, but such a move could be complicated by the presence of Kaylor Navas, his understudy Sergio Rico, on loan from Sevilla and Alphonse Areola, on loan at Navas’ former club Real Madrid.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for Onana, with regular goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future also a topic of speculation.

“It’s hard to say because with FC Barcelona, I am still in very good relations with the president, the coaches,” Onana told Canal+ Afrique.

“As I said earlier, Barca is my home. If I have to go back, I will go back. But today we are still far from it. I’m the Ajax goalkeeper and we’ll see what happens at the end of the season.

“I only take care of the ball game, what happens at the stadium. The rest are my agents who manage.”

Onana started out his career at youth level with Barcelona in 2010 before moving to Ajax in 2014 where he has been the mainstay since the 2016-17 season, playing 178 times in all competitions and keeping 74 clean sheets.

He was a key figure in Ajax’s run to the semi-finals of the Champions League in the 2018-19 season.

Barcelona meanwhile are continuing to negotiate a new contract with their current first choice goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Sources close to the Catalan outfit revealed to Goal last month that Ter Stegen is looking to land an annual salary of around €15 million a year (£13m/$17m). That wage packet would position him among the top earners at Camp Nou, with only captain Lionel Messi above him.

The 27-year-old believes that, after six years with the club, he deserves to have pay parity with the likes of Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and former favourite Andres Iniesta.

Barca are not questioning his value to their cause, but they cannot afford to dig that deep when Financial Fair Play regulations are taken into account.

Barcelona Tracks Ajax Goalkeeper André Onana

Barcelona are monitoring Andre Onana, of Ajax, as they explore options to replace back up goalkeeper Neto – while Chelsea also retain interest in the Cameroon international.

The Blues’ goalkeeping situation has been the subject of much debate in recent weeks after manager Frank Lampard dropped Kepa Arrizabalaga following a series of underwhelming performances.

Frank Lampard,Kepa Arrizabalaga
The Spaniard did not return to the lineup for the 2-0 loss to Manchester United, fuelling reports a new goalkeeper could arrive in the summer. One such candidate is Onana, and Sport believe that Chelsea are leading the race to sign the Cameroon international.

This is not the first time that Onana has been mentioned as a potential option for Chelsea. A previous report suggested the 23-year-old had expressed an interest in moving to Stamford Bridge, with a deal likely to cost around the €40m mark.dutch eredivisie”ajax amsterdam v rkc waalwijk”

However, that figure could increase if other sides choose to try sign Onana as well, and Sport certainly believe that could be the case.

Andre Onana
The main focal point of the article is Barcelona’s interest in the goalkeeper. La Blaugrana are thought to be uncertain whether current backup Neto is good enough for the club, and they are said to have already reached out to Onana, who spent five years in Barcelona’s academy between 2010 and 2015.

Sport even add that it is Onana’s dream to be Barcelona’s starting goalkeeper, and he would be prepared to accept a secondary role as it would give him a chance to prove himself.

There is also thought to be interest from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, but Chelsea are believed to be ahead of the rest of the pack.

A move to Chelsea would certainly make sense. It seems like Lampard is unconvinced by Arrizabalaga – so much so that he is reported to have clashed with Chelsea officials over his reluctance to use the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

If Chelsea do decide to move on from Arrizabalaga, Onana certainly appears to be a viable option, and it would not be the first piece of business between the clubs, with Hakim Ziyech set to join the Blues in the summer.

Chelsea Aims André Onana As Kepa’s Replacement

Chelsea have been boosted in their hunt for a new number one goalkeeper to replace the struggling Kepa Arrizabalaga, with suggestions that highly rated Ajax stopper André Onana is interested in joining the club.

Chelsea paid a word record fee of £71.6m for Kepa in 2018, but the Spaniard’s form has been poor this season and he was benched by manager Frank Lampard for the 2-2 draw against Leicester at the weekend in favour of veteran deputy Willy Caballero.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

Lampard was rumoured in mid-December to have asked Chelsea officials to scout him a new goalkeeper, with the 41-year-old thought to be generally unimpressed by Kepa following a number of mistakes in recent months.

Onana – who has risen to prominence as a key part of an impressive young Ajax side – seemingly considers it an opportunity, and Goal has reported that Chelsea is the Cameroon international’s ‘preferred destination’ this summer.

The 23-year-old is said to think that the Premier League would be ‘ideal’ and sees the uncertainty surrounding Kepa at Stamford Bridge as an opportunity to make his ambition to play in England a reality.

The Daily Mail carries a similar story on Onana and his eye on Chelsea. The newspaper also notes that he would be interested in joining Tottenham, but Chelsea remains his preference.

Andre Onana
Onana has also been linked with Barcelona, where he previously spent five years in the youth ranks after being spotted at Samuel Eto’o’s academy in Cameroon. It is said that Ajax might prefer to deal with Barça owing to their historic relationship, but goalkeeper is far from a priority at Camp Nou.

Elsewhere, Chelsea have recently been linked with Burnley’s Nick Pope to replace Kepa, as well as Sheffield United loanee Dean Henderson.

While Goal says that no decision has been made on whether Kepa will definitely be cut loose, it is explained that a final decision on his future will be made by technical adviser Petr Cech and head of goalkeeping Christophe Lollichon, in conjunction with Lampard.
