2023: Okorocha’s arrest, plan to deny southeast presidency.

Pro-democracy groups yesterday held a peaceful protest in Abuja against the arrest of the immediate past Governor of Imo state, Senator Rochas Okorocha.

Advertisements

Some of the inscriptions on the placards read “United we stand, divided we fall”, “Gov Uzodima stop the witch hunt, APC means peace, restore peace in Imo APC”, “Rochas we believe, leaders must be respected”, “Rochas is a leader, stop the use of thugs”, “Nigerian Students condemn the attacks on the person of Rochas.”.

The protesters, who brandished various placards to register their anger over the development, claimed that Okorocha’s arrest allegedly at the instance of his successor, Hope Uzodinma was part of the grand design to deny the southeast geo-political zone the exalted seat of the presidency in the 2023 poll.

Malam Hamza Rahama, who spoke on behalf of Youth speakers of Nigeria, argued that Okorocha’s arrest by armed policemen constitutes a threat to democratic rule in the country.

“Okorocha is one good material if not the best we have for 2023 after President Muhammadu Buhari and all this harassment and intimidation is because of the next election of which they believe should he vie for the Presidency then he remains a threat to them,” Rahama said.

“Nigerians especially the common man will resist all sort of intimidation aimed at truncating Sen. Rochas Okorocha Presidential ambition because of their strong believe in his capacity to change their fortunes beyond the lines of tribes and religion.”

Mohammed Ibrahim, who spoke on behalf of the Arewa Youth Consultative Council (AYCC), condemned the role player by security agents in the harassment and arrest of Okorocha representing Imo west senatorial district.

Advertisements

“We must publicly condemn the worrisome reports of how Men of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the state government House watched as thugs attacked his Excellency, prior to his arrest,” Ibrahim said.

“This is an indication that the Imo State Government is having a hidden skeleton on this issue, which must be condemned with the most strictest sense. We cannot fold our arms and watch our Security operatives are being used to achieve political aims.”

Comrade Ilefa Peter, who spoke on behalf of the All progressive congress (APC) good governance forum, called on President Muhammadu Bihari and the Chairman of the APC caretaker committee, Malam Mala Buni to wade into the face off between Okorocha and Uzodinma in the interest of the party in Imo state.

Advertisements

The group maintained that the party cannot be coerced to deviate from the zoning of the 2023 presidency to the South East.

The group said, “Okorocha, has paid his dues in our great party. He stood as a lone voice in South East and gave the zone a formidable face, he was the voice of the APC in the southeast while the present Governor was in PDP fighting him for bringing APC to South East, he Rose and became Chairman of the Progressives Governor’s forum and served the forum diligently as a true party man, his love for the APC cannot be quantified, as the past Governor of Imo State, who undertook great and lofty projects in the state, and that gave APC a name in that region.

“It is saddening then to leam that, a man who has fought tooth and nail for the party in South Eastern Nigeria is been ridiculed by his fellow party man all in the name of recovering government assets when in the true sense, it is a journey of personal vendetta.

“The national organ of our great party cannot continue to fold her hands and watch the Governor of Imo State messed the whole effort of his Predecessor, the party as a matter of urgency must call the Governor to order and instill peace in the State for the good people of Imo.

Advertisements

“Okorocha has sacrificed a lot for this party to be left in the hands of his successor to continually play the script of the enemies of South East. It is high time, the party came in to end this crisis once and for all.

“Governor Hope Uzodima should learn to consolidate on the past gains of his Predecessor and work harmoniously for the overwhelming good of Imolites. Government is a continuum, and if truly the party is supreme, our Leaders must learn to consolidate on the party’s ideology of fostering peace and unity at all fronts.”

Rochas Okorocha, Aides ‘arrested’ for estate fraud.

Advertisements

The ex-governor had stormed the estate with his supporters, policemen, soldiers and personnel of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on Sunday morning and ordered the unsealing of the estate.

Some operatives of the Imo State Police Command, Owerri, have arrested a former governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha.

Also arrested were Ijeoma Igboanusi and Lasbrey Okafor-Anyanwu.

Advertisements

While Igboanusi was the deputy chief of staff (Domestics), Okafor-Anyanwu was the commissioner for Transportation when Okorocha, who is the current lawmaker representing Imo West (Orlu Senatorial Zone), held sway as the state governor.

This was as the former governor claimed that the incumbent Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, attacked him (Okorocha) with 1,000 thugs.

Advertisements

Okorocha was arrested on Sunday after unsealing the Spring Palm Estate linked to his wife, Nkechi.

The ex-governor had stormed the estate with his supporters, policemen, soldiers and personnel of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps on Sunday morning and ordered the unsealing of the estate.

Government officials had mobilised to the estate, leading to a free-for-all, as cars were smashed and many persons injured.

Advertisements

A police source, who confided in our correspondent, said that the former governor had been arrested.

The source said, “Rochas Okorocha has been arrested. He is here with us at the state CID. Two of his political associates are also with us. We will record him any moment from now. They are currently meeting with the CP.”

Meanwhile, Okorocha on Sunday alleged that Governor Uzodimma attacked him with “more than 1,000 thugs.”

Okorocha, who spoke through his Spokesperson, Sam Onwuemeodo, in a statement on Sunday, alleged that the governor’s Special Adviser on Special Duties, Chinasa Nwanari, allegedly led thugs, who stormed the estate and destroyed vehicles in his convoy.

Advertisements

The statement read, “More than 1,000 thugs, armed to teeth with knives and guns and led by Chinasa Nwaneri, Governor Hope Uzodinma’s Special Adviser on Special Duties today, Sunday, with the backing of armed policemen from Government House, attacked the former governor of the state and Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, Senator Rochas Okorocha’s convoy.

“They attacked and damaged all the vehicles in his convoy. They also attacked his personal aides. Senator Okorocha was with only his personal aides when the thugs unleashed the attack.

Advertisements

Responding, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Declan Emelumba, dismissed Okorocha’s claim, adding that the former governor’s arrest was in line with the report of a White Paper, which indicated that the Royal Palm Estate in the state was built with taxpayers’ money and not Okorocha wife’s property.

Explaining that Okorocha would be charged to court on Monday, Emelumba said, “There was a judicial panel of inquiry that looked into land use and related matters set up by the Emeka Ihedioha administration, which we inherited and retained. They came up with a report and government accepted it, and then turned it to a White Paper.

“Part of the White Paper’s report indicates that the Royal Palm Estate was built with taxpayers’ money, but Okorocha claims it is his wife’s own. However, the report says it was built with government money.

Advertisements

“The facility even violated Owerri master plan as well. Two days ago, the state government went and sealed the place in accordance with the White Paper. Then today, Okorocha, on his own, led thugs and carried hammer to unseal what government sealed off in line with the dictates of the law.

“He (Okorocha) was there, saying he is daring Governor Uzodinma to come and stop him if he (Uzodinma) has courage. This is lawlessness. So, police went there and caught him in the act and arrested him and some of his aides who arrested him. He (Okorocha) would be taken to court tomorrow.”

On the allegation that Uzodimma attacked the ex-governor with over 1,000 thugs, Emelumba described the claim as lies.

“If 1,000 thugs attacked him, would he be alive now? What then would be the business of the police if 1,000 thugs attacked and took him (Okorocha) away,” Emelumba queried.

Advertisements

When contacted, the spokesperson for the state Police Command, Mr. Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the arrest of Okorocha.

Asked if the former governor would be arraigned, Ikeokwu said, “Nobody is above the law. If he is found culpable, we will arraign him at the conclusion of the investigation.”

APC crisis: Rivers State judge step down ..

Restoration of peace in the crisis ridden Rivers State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) may not be in sight soon as Justice Augusta Chuku of the Rivers State High Court sitting in Port-Harcourt on Monday washed her hands off a matter brought before her by Igo Aguma challenging the legality of the Caretaker Committee of Rivers APC.

Justice Chuku who is a spouse to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Mr Kingsley Chukwu, had in the previous sitting suspended the planned Ward, Local Government and State Congresses of the Party pending the determination of the substantive matter.

lgo Aguma, former federal Lawmaker and a former ally of the Transportation Minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, dragged APC to Court.

When the matter came up on Monday, the Judge withdrew from the case, asking that it be reassigned to another Judge.

Some chieftains of the APC had written a petition against her that she might not dispense justice to all concerned in the case.

This surprise twist in the case again will, most likely, further delay resolution of the lingering crisis in the state APC.

Speaking with Journalists, Tuduru Ede, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) said the parties in the dispute will wait for the Chief Judge of the state to reassign the matter to another Judge.

Counsel to Aguma, Echezuna Etiaba, said the next Judge will, amongst other things, interpret the constitution of the party and determine the legality of the caretaker committee put in place by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

On his part, a chieftain of the party, Barr. Chizi Enyi, said it was abnormal that the Judge didn’t vacate the consequential order she made in the matter before discontinuing with it.

“The Judge instead of setting aside her earlier orders before sending back the case file for reassignment, knowing that her orders will not be binding on another judge, refused to do that”, he said.

Uche Nwosu withdraws filed appeal against ihedioha

Uche Nwosu, Senator Rochas Okorocha’s in-law has withdrawn the appeal filed against the election of Governor Emeka Ihedioha before the Supreme Court.

According to his counsel, Mr. Solomon Umoh (SAN), the withdrawal on Tuesday is based on the judgment of the apex court delivered on the 20th of December 2019.

Nwosu was the candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Imo State and it was clear his case bore no hope of success, his candidacy having been nullified by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court in a ruling on 20 December had nullified Nwosu’s candidacy on grounds of being flag bearer for the Action Alliance (AA) and the APC simultaneously..

The Supreme Court held that by virtue of Nwosu’s double candidature, he was bound to be disqualified from the election and affirmed the judgments of the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Over N6b accrued to commission during okorocha’s regime cannot be traced – Panel

A panel set up to investigate the finances of Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC) has said that over N6 billion that accrued to the commission during the years of ex-governor, Rochas Okorocha, could not be accounted for.

Chairman of the panel, Dr. Romanus Ezeogu, stated this, yesterday, during the submission of the report to Governor Emeka Ihedioha.

“The panel findings on finance and Monterey Bay transactions in the commission showed that ex-governor Okorocha had administered the accounts of the commission as a slush fund as over N6 ,044,774,341.37 could not be accounted for.

“The issue here begs for explanation on what happened to the original 40 per cent monthly derivation fund allocated to ISOPADEC. Governor Okorocha should be held responsible for the missing funds . The law establishing ISOPADEC provides its funding from the 13 per cent derivation from federation account,” Ezeogu said.

The panel also alleged that Okorcha took N422 million from the commission’s fund for the purchase pre- inauguration vehicles from Rise and Shine Motors and also diverted N200 million to purchase transformers during the 2019 campaigns.

The panel also faulted claims that Okorocha spent over N400 million at the abandoned Marine University at Osemoto in Oguta.

The panel alleged it discovered N1 billion lodged in Ecobank, Obinze branch which was withdrawn without bank details or description of any kind.

Ezeogu also disclosed that Dr Pascal Obi, former principal secretary to the ex-governor, received N35 million from the commission’s funds and recommended that he be summoned to explain what he did with the money .

The panel recommended the restructuring of the commission to ensure sustainable development in oil producing areas.

Governor Ihedioha appreciated the painstaking efforts of the panel and promised to look into the report with a view to passing a white paper.

“Going forward, it is import we get through what happened in the past if we must reposition the commission for a more efficient delivery towards realising its mandate.

It is important to note that this is not a witch-hunt. I assure a sense of justice while implementing this recommendations after the white paper must have been submitted,” Ihedioha said.

In a swift reaction, Okorocha described the Ihedioha’s administration as most vindictive and deceitful, saying nothing good would come out of it.

Okorocha who spoke through his Media Aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, said everything about Ihedioha’s administration was fraudulent, fake and deceitful.

Rochas Okorocha

“He has no programme for the people and that is why he is footdragging and chasing shadows because he lacks the capacity to govern a state like Imo. He should have gone back to the House of Representatives.

“For 12 years of PDP government in lmo, ISOPADEC operated from a rented apartment but Okorocha built a magnificent edifice as ISOPADEC headquarters, stopped militancy in the oil producing areas of ohaji, Egbema and Oguta and rehabilitated the militants, built hospitals and schools for them, empowered their youths, gave them light, started the marine university in Oguta. etc.”

Okorocha reacted, says no one seems to understand him in the country.

Former governor of Imo state and lawmaker representing Imo West Senatorial district, Senator Rochas Okorocha has stated that he is one of most ”misunderstood individuals in the country.”

Rochas Okorocha hinged being misunderstood on the feedback he gets from people who define him from different angles. Speaking on Channels TV’s ‘Newsnight’, he also claimed that no past or present Governor of Imo State is yet to do one-tenth of the projects he embarked.

He said;

“I wish you can meet the governor of Imo state (Emeka Ihedioha) and ask that Rochas said what he has done is not up to one-tenth of what I have done, or other governors put together have done.

“The first international cargo airport in Imo state, I built it and it was adjudged the best in the country by FAAN.

“I built 30 hospitals, some of them completed, while most are not completed, but they have all the roofs, tiled, except equipping; I built one of the best state high court, the best prison, the best police headquarters

“I know my nature, I am highly misunderstood in this country, and some people define me from different angles. If I do one-tenth of what the governor is doing there, the whole world will hear about it.”

Okorocha also revealed that he is yet to know what caused his rift with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole.

He said;

“If I was told in my dream that I’ll be treated this way, I’d have said it’s not possible. One day, the opportunity may occur that I might hear from Adams what really went wrong because till today I am very much confused as to what went wrong.

“I have tried to make an excuse for him that probably somebody must have gossiped or do something that he believed. Or alternatively, it must be a search for political power or relevance or it would have been who he is.

Rochas Okorocha

“But whatever happened in APC was still like a dream to me, because APC had no reason to lose Imo state.”

He also said he won’t be leaving the APC because the politicial party is like a family to him.

For me, politics is not a do or die affair but give and take – Uche Nwosu.

…I am not struggling to be imo governor

The preferred Imo State governorship candidate of Senator Rochas Okorocha in the 2019 general elections, Mr Uche Nwosu, says becoming the number one citizen of the state is not a ‘do or die’ affair for him.

Although Nwosu who contested the March 9 poll on the platform of the Action Alliance (AA) wished to be a governor, he stressed that he never opted to achieve his aim at all costs.

“Once the Supreme Court has said ‘this is how it is’, you have to accept it. For me, politics is not do or die affair; politics is give and take,” he said while addressing reporters at the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri, the state capital.

“The Supreme Court; they have given their decision. Whether good or bad, I accept it and what matters is Imo State. I am not fighting to be governor of Imo State by all means,” the governorship candidate added.

Senator Okorocha, the immediate past governor of Imo State, had backed Nwosu who is his son-in-law to succeed him in the last elections.

But Nwosu could not get the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a situation which caused disagreement within the party while he defected to the AA to pursue his governorship ambition.

Against the backdrop of heated political activities in Imo, Mr Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged as the people’s choice as he was returned elected by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

After a series of legal battles, Nwosu promised to support any candidate who emerges victorious at the Election Petition Tribunal case pending at the Supreme Court.

He also noted that the apex court as the APC governorship candidate in the election and called on party faithful to work together for the progress of the state.

Uche Nwosu | Okorocha’s son in law

The politician said, “The Supreme Court has said it all. The Supreme Court judgement said that I am the candidate of APC. What it means is that another person was foisted on APC. I am the candidate of APC.

“I have forgiven everybody no matter who the person is. From the national chairman, those who came and destroy the APC in the state, I have forgiven them. What we need is to move ahead, we are brothers and sisters and there must be peace.”

That aside, I have forgiven everybody, no matter what they have done, from the National Chairman to Gulak, to those in the state; what we need is to move ahead, we are brothers and sisters, there must be peace,” Nwosu said.

Nwosu, who looked refreshed, added: “You can only have one governor in a state and you can only have one final court and that is the Supreme Court – we have to accept it. For me, politics is not a do-or-die affair, it’s give-and-take. The Supreme Court has given its judgement, either good or bad, I have accepted it.

Nwosu (Left) Okorocha (Right)

“What matters is Imo State. I’ve said in my statement, whoever wins at the Supreme Court, I will give my support, be it Emeka Ihedioha, Araraume or Uzodinma I will support. But in supporting if you do well, I will praise; if you don’t, we would criticise you,” Nwosu stated.

Speaking on his next move after the judgment, Nwosu said: “I have no regret at all. It is not my first time of running for a political position. I’m a politician and a town planner by profession. For now, politics is over, pending when there would be another election. I am still a young man and have age to my advantage.”

Chairman, Okorocha Attached The Success Of SDGs To Culture.

Represented by one of his aides, Chigozie Emeka, he said: “No people can grow without their culture and heritage. Whether you talked about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the truth remains that not until a people recognise whom they are, their root, it may be very impossible achieve the SDGs.

Former governor of Imo State and member representing Imo West in the Senate, Senator Rochas Okorocha has advised his successor, Chief Emeka Ihedioha to leave him alone and face governance.

Okorocha’s advice followed Ihedioha’s comments during the 2019 Ahiajioku Lecture on Saturday that the former governor’s eight years tenure was ‘years of locust’ because he had shunned the Ahiajioku Lecture, which was the Igbo intellectual harvest for the period he governed the state.

Ihedioha had also described Okorocha as a man “who rode on the popularity of an essentially Igbo party to beguile Imo people but who turned out to despise everything the Igbo hold dear, a man who limped into Douglas House Owerri on a lie of the garb, and never held the lecture; instead, the name of Ahiajoku Centre was changed and anything that could amount to an intellectual journey of discovery for the Igbo was shunned”.

But, Okorocha, who reacted to that statement, advised Governor Ihedioha to face governance and stop abusing him, saying that the whole thing was becoming nauseating.

The former governor, whose statement was issued by his media adviser, Sam Onwuemeodo, said the reason Ihedioha was always complaining about his administration was because “Ihedioha is governing Imo State with a stolen mandate. Since then, he has never slept with his two eyes closed. He has remained haunted by that electoral mishap.

“What happened in Owerri on Saturday was not Ahiajoku Lecture but a get-together by the PDP bigwigs and they were assembled by Governor Ihedioha to abuse the former governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, the APC and the Party’s leadership at all levels.

“All those who attended the event including Fani Kayode, Chief Chidoka, Chief Peter Obi, Prof. M. Echeruo, Governor Udom Emmanuel etal, are all PDP chieftains. So, it was the first get-together of the Party after the elections, in the South-East. And they did nothing else than to abuse Okorocha, APC and other leaders”.

According to Okorocha, Ihedioha’s major achievement in the past seven months was the constant abuse of himself (Okorocha) “because he is cowed or intimidated by Okorocha’s existing achievements. He can’t cope and has no other option than to resort to abuses”.

Oshiomhole, Amosun, Okorocha, Others Know Fate Friday…

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole will on Friday during the National Working Committee (NWC) know his fate on the impeachment threats hanging on his neck.

The governors under the platform of the APC Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) and other aggrieved members of the party have repeatedly called for Oshiomhole’s resignation or sack over what they called his inability to manage the crises rocking the party and his continued rift with the governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki.

Others whose future with the party will be decided include the immediate past governors of Imo and Ogun state, Rochas Okorocha and Ibikunle Amosun, following their suspension for anti-party activities, which requires the ratification of NEC.

A member of the NWC, told Daily Sun that other items that would be part of the agenda for the meeting include possible ratification of other suspended members of the NWC, the Director General Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu and former Minister of Niger Delta, Usani Uguru.

The source however expeessed reservations over the future of the former Edo State governor, adding that he may be left off the hook following the APC victory in the recently concluded Bayelsa and Kogi states governorship election last weekend.

“Whatever plans the governors have against the national chairman may have been water down by the party’s victory at Bayelsa and Kogi govermorshiphave elections last weekend. We are hopeful that it will provide enough safe landing to cushion the hostility against him,” our source noted.

Commenting further on the agenda for the meeting, the NWC member said that since NEC has not officially met since after the 2019 general election, it will also use the opportunity to review the performance of the party, adding that it will also serve as stock-taking for the two recent election.

“For certain, the replacement of the national officers that have left the party will be part of the agenda. NWC has lost many members either on accounts of appointment into government or controversial suspension. Some of them include, Otumba Niyi Adebayo, Deputy National Chairman (South) who is now a Minister, National Auditor, George Moghalu appointed Managing Director National Inland Waterway Authority (NIWA), Shuaibu, Deputy National Chairman (North) who is allegedly suspended. Others include the National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni, who is now the governor of Yobe state, and Inuwa Abdulkadir, National Vice Chairman (North West) also suspended.

“Don’t also forget that in June 2019, the NWC allegedly queried Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. During the 2019 general elections, on accounts of the roles of former Governors Okorocha and Ibikunle Amosun played against the candidates of the party, they were suspended,” he said.

Meanwhile, the national leadership of the APC has condemned the post-election violence reported in Kogi State which led to the death of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) woman leader, Salome Abuh and destruction of property in the state.

The statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Isaa-Onilu, noted that APC abhors violence and other criminalities which sadly continue to plague our electioneering process.

“The party condoles with the family of the deceased and others affected by the post-election violence. While the Kogi police command says the killing was as a result of a reprisal attack, we urge the Kogi people to ensure this does not escalate.

“We are aware that the Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has already directed law enforcement agencies to fish out the perpetrators.

“The APC abhors violence and other criminalities which sadly continue to plague our electioneering process. We urge partisans to see election as a democratic contest and not a do or die affair that we pay with our lives. We pray that the culprits are caught and the full weight of the law is brought to bear on them.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has advised partisans that are not satisfied with the results of governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states to seek redress in court and shun violence. We must all heed this call,” the statement read.
