Just in: Lagos reveal plan to replace Keke, Okada with…


Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to introduce what it describes as First Mile and Last Mile (FMLM) mobility solution to replace banned Okada and tricycle by July.

Transportation Commissioner Frederick Oladeinde, speaking yesterday at the 2020 ministerial press briefing at the JJT Park, Alausa, Ikeja, said: “Following the restriction of motorcycles and tricycles for commuter operations in some areas in the metropolis, the government is working on implementing a First Mile and Last Mile (FMLM) mobility solution.”

He explained that Okada and tricycle are not part of the state’s transport architecture, adding that they are constituting nuisance on the roads and responsible for the high rate of accidents and crimes.

“We have identified 285 last mile routes within the seven bus reform initiative zones across Lagos. We have developed bus specifications and shared same with potential bus manufacturers. We expect these to be rolled out in the next two months,” Oladeinde said.’

Lagos State Government has inaugurated 37 roads and carried out repairs and rehabilitation of more than 354 others.

It said that ongoing and uncompleted projects inherited from past administrations would be completed to improve the living standard of Lagosians.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructures, Aramide Adeyoye, who spoke yesterday at the 2020 ministerial press briefing at the JJT Park, Alausa, Ikeja said that one of the major projects inherited by the administration, which would be completed, was the Agege Pen Cinema flyover bridge designed to reduce travel time for residents of Ifako-Ijaiye, Agege and Alimosho local governments.

She said the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration will make the 4th Mainland Bridge a reality, adding that the administration plans to expand the Agege-Berger Road to reduce travel time.

Lagos Governor State New Measures To Ease Lockdown, Ban Okada Activities. [Nigeria]

Ahead of the May 4th expiration of the lockdown imposed by the Federal Government on Lagos State, Ogun State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Lagos State Government has introduced a strict framework for movement and re-opening of businesses.

The set of new guidelines, according to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in his ninth briefing at the State House in Marina on Wednesday, are to safeguard the gains which the State had made in the past four weeks in the fight against the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

From next Monday, Sanwo-Olu said the State Government will be implementing the dusk-to-dawn curfew announced by President Muhammadu Buhari last Monday as part of the phased measures to reduce risk of contagion of the COVID-19 disease among the residents and to consolidate on the response strategy deployed to combat the pandemic.

The Governor’s new framework made fundamental changes to public transportation system and business dealings at corporate offices, local markets and malls.

All passenger buses are not permitted to load to full capacity, Sanwo-Olu ordered in the new guidelines. All commercial vehicles, the Governor said, must carry maximum of 60 per cent of full capacity and their drivers must use face mask and observe other prescribed hygiene tips.

The Governor also suspended the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, across the state, with the exception of those used for courier and logistics purposes.

Sanwo-Olu directed the drivers of tricycles (Keke NAPEP) operating in unrestricted areas not to carry more than two passengers per trip, adding that the passengers must keep appropriate distance.

Besides, food handlers at public eateries and restaurants have been mandated by the State Government to wear masks and hand gloves at all times, especially during the preparation and serving of foods.

Only take-out meals and delivery services will be permitted at eateries and restaurants, Sanwo-Olu ordered, warning that in-dining services will not be allowed at the moment.

The Governor said all businesses that will re-open next week must operate between the hours of 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The new directive on business operating hours affects all corporate firms, banks, malls and local markets.

He said: “Following the culmination of the second phase of the lockdown on Lagos, Ogun and the FCT, and the nationwide address by President Muhammadu Buhari, it has become imperative for me to address our residents and to share a broader framework for the implementation of the President’s directives here in Lagos.

“There will be a dusk-to-dawn curfew from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am daily. This means that we expect all Lagos residents to stay in their homes in these hours, except those in essential services.

“All commuters are mandated to wear face masks at all times, sanitise with alcohol-based sanitizer or wash their hands with soap and running water before and after of every trip. All motor parks and garages must avoid overcrowding. Social distancing is required for passengers queuing up to board buses.

“All buses should be loaded to a maximum of 60 per cent of full capacity. No standing allowed in all BRT and LBSL bus operations. All air- conditioning systems in public transport systems must be switched off.

“Commercial Motorcycles, popularly known as Okadas, are to suspend their operations statewide, except for those motorcycles used for courier and logistics purposes. Tricycles (Kekes) operating in unrestricted areas, must not carry more than two passengers per trip and must ensure appropriate social distancing is maintained between passengers.”

In addition, the Governor announced the restriction of operating hours of water transportation companies to the period between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm daily.

He said under no circumstance should vehicles carrying food items have more than seven passengers.

All public and private schools from primary level to tertiary education must remain closed, Sanwo-Olu directed. He said online classes and lessons that had already been started must continue until further notice.

The Governor added that businesses will be allowed to operate within “Controlled Easing Phase” framework, clarifying that the expiration of the lockdown was not a directive for the full reopening of the economy.

“It is a gradual and controlled easing of the lockdown. We will continue to monitor the public health situation; the economic impact of the lockdown and always adjust our responses accordingly,” the Governor said.

The Governor acknowledged the role of banking sector in sustaining the economy, urging banks to open all their branches and offer full complement of their services to the public. He, however, said banking operations must fall within the stipulated hours of 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, adding that banks’ managements must ensure regular cleaning and decontamination of their ATM machines and devices regularly used by the public.

He said: “Companies that choose to operate within this Controlled Easing Phase are to operate between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. They are also directed to operate at a maximum of 60 per cent of their staff capacity. Some non-essential workers can continue to work online and remotely from the office. Online and work-from-home arrangements are highly encouraged to continue as much as is practicable.

“All entertainment centres, such as event centres, cinemas, arcades, bars, casinos, day clubs, nightclubs and beaches shall remain closed till further notice. Swimming pools, gyms, barber-shops, Spas, beauty salons, and all public parks, including those in private and residential estates, will continue to remain closed for another two weeks in the instance, at which point we will review and advise on the permissible opening date for these establishments.”

Sanwo-Olu said the Government’s whistleblower channels would be fully opened to report companies that would flout the new directives. He said whistleblowers would be guaranteed full protection and their identities will be kept strictly confidential.

The Governor also announced that he would inaugurate a Committee on Thursday, which will comprise representatives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Private Transport Operators, Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), and the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget.

The committee, he said, will be charged with the responsibility of communicating the new State Government’s framework to their members for ease of implementation and compliance.

Ebonyi State Governor Relax Lockdown, Lift Okada Ban. [Nigeria]

Ebonyi State Governor Chief Dave Nweze Umahi, on Tuesday, has lifted the ban on Commercial motorcycle operation popularly known as Okada, and also relaxed the curfew imposed on the state between 7pm and 7am.

Governor Umahi made the announcement during a statewide broadcast on the update of preventive measures taken by the State government to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the state.

The Governor stated that the lifting of the ban on Okada operation and the relaxing on the curfew followed the level of corporation by citizens of the state and announced that the ban still continues within 300 meters away from the different boundaries in the state.

Umahi maintained that the ban on Religious activities and shutdown of drinking joints in that state continues adding that the World Health Organization (WHO) stipulates that opening on drinking joints exposes the people to dangers of contracting the virus.

Okada, Keke Ban: ACOMORAN tackles Lagos Government


The national leadership of the Amalgamated Commerical Motorcycle, Tricycle, Owners, Repairer, and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), has chided the Lagos State government for restricting the activities of motorcycles (Okada) and tricycle operators in some parts of the State.

The National Chairman of ACOMORAN, Prince Samsudeen Apelogun, said the government policy of banning motorcycle and tricycle in six local government areas of the state, was a clear demonstration of government insensitivity to the plight of the masses.


He said this in his remarks at the inauguration of new state executives of the Association in Ogun State, under the chairmanship of Comrade Kayode Sowunmi, on Friday, that government ought to have provided alternative means before banning commercial motorcycle and tricycle activities.

Apelogun lamented that many organised firms that invested in the sector are now in huge debts, owing to the government policy.


He said many of the motorcycle and tricycle operators are now back in the labour market and are confronted with the hardship of how to make a living.

The chairman said,” I really don’t think that banning commercial motorcycle without providing alternative, as was done in Lagos will never be the panacea for the problems facing the Lagos state government and Lagosians in general.


“That policy is a demonstration of the government’s insensitivity to the plight of the people. If care is not taken, many of those that have been thrown back into the labour market might find solace in crime

” We have over the years, advocated for sanitization and for setting of standards against adding to the pains of the people in the name of policy implementation. Unfortunately, poor Nigerians are usually at the receiving end.”

He appreciated the Ogun State Government both past and present for adding human face in their policy formulation.

In his remarks, Sowunmi said his administration would focus on five-point agenda which include the overall welfare of members; security of members; insurance policy; empowerment and discipline.

Kwara plan to give uniforms to Okada riders


The Kwara State Government has revealed its plans to issue Identity Cards and uniforms to commercial motorcycle operators as security measures to curb crimes in the state.

The State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Suleiman Rotimi, made this known on Thursday in Ilorin during a meeting with Okada riders in the state.


Rotimi said that the measure was necessary due to the influx of Okada riders from other states into Ilorin, the state capital.

He said that part of the security measures adopted was the introduction of uniforms, ID cards with bar codes and stickers to enhance easy identification and planning.


Rotimi listed other security measures to include census and registration of commercial motorcycle operators to ascertain their population in the state.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Yusuf Manjo, commended the joint motorcycle union for accepting the proposal for the introduction of a single uniform, stickers, and ID cards.

Manjo said that the necessary mechanism would be set in motion to actualise the measures within the shortest time possible.

Responding, the President of Joint Motorcycle Riders Union, Mr Gabriel Ajewole, expressed the union’s readiness to abide by the security measures.

Okada/Keke Ban: Oride, Gokada has no right to operate – Lagos Deputy Governor


Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has claimed that motorcycle hailing companies came into state for visit.

Hamzat, who spoke on an interview with Channels Television, said the state never gave approval for their activities.

He also restated that motorcycles and tricycles were banned to curb crime rate and decrease road accidents.


He said, “The truth of the matter is that Okada is becoming an avenue to perpetrating crimes. And we cannot wait until a major disaster happens. We knew what happened in Kano State some years back when the Emir of Kano was attacked through this means of transportation. Our lives are important.

“Some of them had knives and guns. If you are interested in riding Okada, why do you need a knife or a gun? Not every one of them but those who had the weapons on were arrested. The ban is majorly about security and safety.


“Data from the 27 general hospitals in the state indicated that on the average monthly, we record 28 deaths related to Okada. So, we cannot as a government let this continue. In the last two to three weeks since the ban, the accident rates have reduced from 28 to 7. So, if we saved 21 lives, is that not important? So, this is about saving lives.

“We did not endorse Okada ride-hailing operators in Lagos. Anybody can come on a courtesy visit. They actually came on a courtesy visit and we told them clearly that there is a law regulating Okada operations in Lagos. But that is not an endorsement; it was just a courtesy visit.

“The most populous areas of the state are not even affected. The most populous areas are Alimosho Local Government followed by Mushin, followed by Kosofe, followed by Oshodi/Isolo. So, people can do their businesses. All we are saying is, don’t ply the major roads, the bridges because it is not just safe and it is also a way for criminals to act.

“Okada riding is not a job that most people want their children to do but the economic situation forced them to do it and now we are saying, let’s give them better alternatives; let us get people trained to do welding and other vocations.”

Okada/Keke Ban: Disables protest in Lagos {Photos}


The protesters occupy a section of Mobolaji Johnson Avenue, Alausa in Ikeja.

Some residents of Lagos State who are physically challenged have occupied a section of Mobolaji Johnson Avenue, Alausa in Ikeja, the state capital in protest.

The protesters who are majorly commercial tricycle riders are protesting over the restriction of motorcycles and tricycles in some local government areas and expressways in the state by the Lagos State government.

Carrying various placards, the protesters lamented that the restriction will force them to return to the street as beggars and destitute.

Some of them who spoke with Channels Television lamented that driving motorcycle and tricycle has been their source of livelihood since they abandoned begging.

Okada/Keke Ban: Di’ja frown, slam Lagos government


Di’ja a few days ago reacted to the Okada and Kekenapep ban calling for the regulation and not the eradication of the means of transport.

“I understand Okada can be a nuisance but it also came into existence (as is) due to the traffic situation of Lagos. I don’t think one month was enough grace period for such a change.


We should focus on regulating PROPERLY and CONSISTENTLY not banning completely. People don’t depend on the government, they depend on themselves. There are so many pros and cons to all of this. Can we talk about it though?

However, with the recent cases of violence recorded, Di’ja reacted again by taking to her Twitter page to slam the Lagos State governor, for seizing and damaging bikes in the state.

According to her, the riders are desperate and trying to earn money to feed their families.

She also expressed sadness in the acts of racism and tribalism that citizens have been exhibiting in the past few days.

Okada/Keke Ban: Fashola reveals why he is in support


Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Works and Housing, has declared his support for Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s decision to ban Okadas, motorcycles.

Fashola who was governor of Lagos state from from May 2007 to May 2015 and had banned Okada riders during his administration, showed his support behind Governor Sanwo-Olu’s decision when he spoke at the public lecture organised by the United Action for Change (UAC) in Lagos today Thursday February 6th


“If you care about security, you should back your governor on okada ban. As a centre of excellence, okada cannot be part of the plan. I’ve always held this position. Motorcycle have always been a conduit pipe for the opioid crisis among youths. We must act to eliminate anonymity.

I was robbed in my home, in fact on my bed in 1999. Organised crime is dynamic, criminals are aware that people don’t keep money at home again, now they diversified into kidnapping people for ransom. We must have data to identify people. You have SIM cards on your phone. It’s called subscriber identity module which can be tracked everywhere in the world. The attorney-general of each state and legislators should act.

In those days, we used to have licence for bicycles.” Fashola said

On January 27th, the state government banned motorcycles, keke Napeps in six Local Government Areas (LGAs), nine Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and 10 major highways across the State. Also banned are ride hailing services, OPay and GOkada.

Lagos: Schoolgirl shot dead in alleged Okada riders’ clash with Police


The clash between okada riders and police officers in Iyana Ipaja has reporrtedly turned violent, after a schoolgirl was reportedly hit by a stray bullet.

In a video shared online, a schoolgirl clad in her school uniform can be seen lying motionless on the floor. Blood soaked through her school uniform and concerned people tried to tie a cloth around her to stem the blood flow.


There was a commotion around her as people screamed in distress as they tried unsuccessfully to offer whatever comfort they could to the dying girl.

The clash in Iyana Ipaja started this morning as a result of the okada and keke ban in Lagos.

Lagos Okada Ban: Horse transport from Ikoyi to Obalende, N3,500


A show promoter has claimed that he was asked to pay 3,500 Naira for a horse ride from Keffi street, Ikoyi to Obalende.

Instagram user @Iamstillonstill revealed he waited for a bus for like 30 minutes but when he didn’t see one, he decided to ride on a horse to his destination.

However, when he asked the rider how much it will cost, he was told he will have to pay 3,500 Naira for the short journey.

Shocker: UNN ban Okada in Nsukka campus


The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has banned the use of motorcycles in Nsukka campus to check persistent cases of insecurity and need to secure the lives and properties.

The ban was contained in a memorandum to the university community dated January 17, 2020, which was signed by Mr Chris Igbokwe the registrar of the university. It was entitled, “Total ban on the use of motorcycles in Nsukka campus.”


The memo partly reads: “I have been directed to convey to the university community and the public, the total ban of the use of motorcycles in the premises of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka campus with effect from Monday, February 18, 2020, as already obtained in the Enugu campus of the university and other federal universities.

“This decision was taken after due consideration of the security situation in Nsukka campus and the persistence of disturbing cases of insecurity of human and material resources. Most of these unwholesome criminal acts are perpetrated through the use of motorcycles on campus.


“All defaulting motorcycles will be impounded by the security department, and will only be released on payment of recovery fee of N5,000 by each offender.

“The acting chief security officer and the security departments are directed to ensure full compliance and apprehend and detain any motorcycle that is found within the university premises in contravention of the direction.


“For avoidance of doubt, affect all categories of staff, students and the general public,” he said.

Mr. Christian Alumona the acting CSO, UNN, confirmed to our reporter that motorcycles are been used for criminal activities on campus.

He said that the ban was not targeted at anybody or groups but a decision was taken to safeguard the lives and property of staff and students of the institution, adding that

the security department will ensure total compliance once the ban takes effect.

Lagos: Okada riders clashes with Police


There is total lockdown at the Iyana Ipaja area of the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway with commercial tricycle (‘Keke’) and motorcycle (‘Okada’) operators barricading the road and destroying commercial buses.

The Okada and Keke operators, armed with guns, machetes, daggers and broken bottles, disrupted commercial activities and vehicular movements on the road.


They were shootings and throwing of stones on passersby and motorists.

The police are presently trying to disperse the rampaging protesters who are protesting the state government’s restrictions on their activities in some local government areas, bridges and routes in Nigeria’s largest city and most populated state.

Lagos Gokada rider: I earn N600k monthly


A female Gokada rider has revealed the staggering amount she is potentially earning daily, working as a gokdada rider. She was among the many Riders of Max and Gokada, motorbike hailing services, that steppped out to protest against the ban on okada in several parts of Lagos state.

Speaking to Newsmen during the protes, the Gokada rider who claims to be a student of one of the polytechnics in the country said that she makes about N20,000 daily from being a rider with Gokada.

Lagos state government earlier announced its decision to implement the ban on okada and tricycle taxis in 15 local councils from February 1.

FG cannot intervene in Lagos Okada ban – Amaechi


Rotimi Amaechi, the minister of transportation, has said the federal government lacks the jurisdiction to intervene in the recent ban of okada and tricycles in some parts of Lagos state.


The minister said on Monday, February 3, that the matter is strictly a state affair. He said the federal government could not decide whether a state should use okada or tricycles.

[Video] Riots in Lagos as police clashes with protesters over okada ban


A massive riot has erupted in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria following the ban on okadas and tricycles from plying certain routes in the metropolis by the Lagos State Government.


The protest has led to a clash between the police and okada riders in Ijora area of the state as the police tried to stop the protesters.

The protesters, in their large number blocked the expressway and burnt tyres on the road. The police, in a bid to stop the protest led to the riot.

It was gathered that the police had shot canisters of teargas to disperse the large number of protesters at Ijora Olopa.

Twitter user, Ademide tweeted: “Dear Lagosians kindly steer clear of Ijora Olopa area. A shootout presently occurring there and there’s damage to properties going on. Police are said to be exchanging bullets with Okada and Keke riders. Don’t fall victim. Find alternate routes.”

Breaking: Okada riders in war with police in lagos


Okada and Keke riders in Ijora area of Lagos State are currently clashing with police.

The riders insisted on going about their business despite the ban on their operations.


The Lagos State Government had banned Okada and Keke in Lagos.

The ban took effect from February 1, 2020.

It also affected Oride, Gokada and other motocycle hailing services.


At the time of filing this report, two people had been hit by bullets.

A man and a woman, who are yet to be identified, were hit by bullets along Ijora Oloye Road.

The man has been rushed to a local physician, who would induce the bullet out of his leg.

Schools within the axis have all shut while the violence continues.


Lagos: Police enforce Okada, Keke ban


Commercial motorcyclists popularly known as okada riders have started leaving Lagos, as enforcement of ban on motorcycle and tricycle operations in major areas of the state took effect on Saturday.

Many okada riders have already surrendered to the enforcement by relocating from Lagos with their motorcycles.


A resident of Ishaga Close, Itire, Yusuf Salau, said that a number of motorcyclists left Igbeyin Adun Street, Ishaga, around 6am on Saturday in two trucks loaded with their motorcycles. NobleReporters learnt

“The majority of them are not from Lagos. They told me they were going back to their states. It is possible some of them would relocate to neighbouring states where there is no ban,” Salau said.


An okada rider, Salisu Garuba, from Nasarawa State, said he just bought his motorcycle and he did not want to lose it to the police.

He stated, “I am going back to my state. Police once seized my motorcycle and I knew what I went through before I got it back. If they seize it this time around, I doubt I would get it back.”


The state government had on Monday proscribed the operations of okada and tricycle riders in Apapa LGA, Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Lagos Mainland LGA, Yaba LCDA, Surulere LGA, Itire-Ikate LCDA, and Coker-Aguda LCDA.

Others are Ikeja LGA, Onigbongbo LCDA, Ojodu LCDA, Eti-Osa LGA, Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, Iru-Victoria Island LCDA, Lagos Island LGA and Lagos Island East LCDA.


The ban covered 2,000 routes, including major roads, expressways and bridges.

Meanwhile, stranded commuters around the state have expressed discomfort caused by the ban which affects six local governments and nine local council development areas of the state.


A hair stylist in Ogba, Mrs Olabisi David, said that she trekked from her residence in Ikeja GRA to Ikeja under bridge, where she boarded a bus to her shop. N.Rs culled

“I suffered today (Saturday),” David bemoaned. “I was at the roadside for one hour without seeing any tricycle to take to Ikeja under bridge,” she said.


David stated that she later walked down to the Police College, hoping to catch up with any tricycle. She was disappointed. “I trekked down to the under bridge. I was so tired. It is not convenient for me to be walking this long distance every day but I have to go to shop. Government should put a human face to the ban,” she stated.

Between 9am and 10am when our correspondent visited Ogunusi Road, no tricycle rider operated along the highway. People were seen at different bus stops along the route, waiting impatiently for buses, many of which had already been filled up from the take-off point in Ojodu-Berger.


“This (the ban) is unfair. The people are the ones bearing the consequence, not the people in government,” a boutique operator in Ikeja, Faith Akindele, told our correspondent at Grammar School bus stop.

She urged the government to device a better means of enforcing road traffic laws rather than the outright ban. “It is usually tough to get a bus en route to Ikeja from here (Grammar School bus stop) in the morning. So many people boarded tricycles,” she said.


Vincent Cletus, a businessman, who sells printing materials on Agege Motor Road, one of the restricted routes, lamented that he was stranded at a park around Jibowu, where he normally took an okada or tricycle to his shop.

He said, “I had to trek down to the shop for about one hour. There were buses but people were very many at the park and I couldn’t struggle to board a bus. I was running late and customers were already calling me.”


“I just got to my office (at 10am) after I started my journey from Egbe to Bode Thomas. The majority of it was with my feet. I trekked so tey (much) that legs ache. Monday go (will be) hard,” A Twitter user, Urueye Shadrach, wrote.

Our correspondent observed that few okada riders operated along Ogunusi Road and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway using ‘pick-and-go,’ tactic as one of them described it.


“I didn’t wait at bus stops as I normally do. I sighted passengers from distance and quickly picked them. I know it’s risky because policemen were on patrol to enforce the ban but this is the only means of livelihood I have,” an okada rider, Musa Idris, said.

The Chairman, Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, described the compliance level as “fantastic,” adding that his team went to many areas, including Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki, and Ajah.

“The riders complied even though there were pockets of disobedience. We just started today (Saturday). We will not relent. We arrested seven tricycles and three motorcycles but some police divisions would still bring (seized motorcycles and tricycles) to our office.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, did not pick calls to his mobile and had yet to reply to a text message sent to him on the enforcement as of press time.

No company has the right to run okada, Keke – Lagos Govt ..


The Lagos State Government has stated no one was given the licence to operate commercial services with motorcycles popularly known as Okada, following a ban it placed on the means of transportation in six local governments and nine local council development areas of the state.

Lagos State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy in the state, Gbenga Omotosho who disclosed this on ‘Sunrise Daily’, said what the government has been trying to do is regulate commercial motorcyclist so that their excesses can be curtailed.


He said;

“You are talking about registration; as far as I am concern, the government has not registered any company to come and be running okada.

“In fact, what the government was trying to look at is how to regulate these people so that their excesses can be curtailed.


“But as far as I know, nobody has been licenced to go and start running okada because it is unfortunate that … the rate at which people are dying; the rate at which people are being robbed on the roads; the police are worried, everybody is worried.”

Omotosho also disclosed that the Lagos State Government decided to enforce the ban after a robust assessment of the debate on the rate of accidents in the state. He alleged that the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) recorded about 104,000 accident cases involving the common Lagosians with broken arms and legs.


The Commissioner also made a clarification on the ban, stating that courier services operators are allowed to ply all routes because they don’t constitute so much danger.

Omotosho added;

“The guys who are doing courier services, for example, they don’t carry passengers and they don’t constitute so much danger. So, those ones are allowed.

“They have to be above 200cc and you have to have a box behind you that you are doing courier service and you don’t have to carry passengers; you have to be well-kitted and wear your helmet.”

Okada, Keke allegedly banned in 6 LGAs in Lagos ..


Lagos State has banned the operations of commercial motorcycles and tricycles in six local government areas in the state.

The affected LGs are the state capital Ikeja, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, Apapa, Surulere and Eti Osa. The ban will come into effect on February 1.


“After consultations with stakeholders, the State Security Council, in compliance with the extant Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, has decided to commence enforcement of the law which bans the operation of Motorcycles (Okada) and Tricycles (Keke) in the following Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs),” Lagos State information and strategy commissioner Gbenga Omotosho said at a press conference.

The ban affects the local council development areas (LCDAs) under the LG. They are Apapa LG- Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Lagos Mainland LG – Yaba LCDA, Surulere LG- Itire-Ikate and Coker-Aguda LCDAs, Ikeja LG- Onigbongbo and Ojodu LCDAs, Eti-Osa LG- Ikoyi-Obalende and Iru/Victoria Island LCDAs, Lagos Island LG- Lagos Island East LCDA.

Omotosho said the ban is the first stage of the state government’s plan to sanitize its “roads and protect Lagosians from the negative effects of these illegal modes of transportation.”

“The Law is very clear. Motorcycles (Okada) and Tricycles (Keke) are banned on all highways, bridges and the listed roads,” Omotosho said.

Okada rider arrested by oyo police for committing 3 crimes.

The Oyo state police command have arrested an Okada rider, Gbenga Oduola, who allegedly abducted a woman, Bosede Jimoh (34) with her five-year-old son, Fadeyi Opeyemi Ramadan, raped the woman and then severed the head of the boy at his house in Igbo-Ora community in Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of the state on December 9th.

Parading the suspect before newsmen today Friday December 20th, the state Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, said the woman and her deceased son had boarded a commercial motorcycle on December 8th with Gbenga as the driver. However instead of taking them to their destination, he took them to his house where he raped the woman and then killed her son.

The police boss said the suspect raped the deceased woman three times before daybreak.

“The following day, December 9, the motorcyclist took the victim’s son to another room in the house where he beheaded him with a cutlass. He confessed to having dumped the remains of the boy at a nearby bush beside his house, where they were recovered and deposited at the General Hospital mortuary for autopsy,” CP Olukolu said

Speaking with newsmen, the suspect said he liked the deceased and intended to marry her. According to him, while he was taking the deceased to her destination, he asked her out and she agreed. He maintained he doesn’t know why he killed her son.

“I then took her to my house where we had sex. I didn’t know why I beheaded the boy. I didn’t abduct them. I made love advances to the woman and she agreed, so I took them home. She had even agreed to marry me but I didn’t know why I killed the boy; it was the devil’s work.”

The suspect said he had previously married two women but the two had left him and that was why he became desperate to marry another woman.

The police commissioner said the suspect will be arraigned in court soon.
