‘Chelsea, back off Oblak’ Atletico warns

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo sounded out a warning to any clubs planning to make a move for Diego Simeone’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Jan Oblak is an Atlético Madrid player “period”, club president Enrique Cerezo has warned, inviting clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea to think twice before making a move for the Slovenia stopper. Oblak is widely regarded as the best keeper in the world and has attracted interest from both Premier League sides with question marks over the form and future of both David de Gea and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea have already splashed out to sign Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner ahead of the 2020-21 season, while Kai Havertz is rumoured to be close to joining too.

The Blues are said to be looking for a new goalkeeper after a disappointing campaign for Kepa, while De Gea’s form at United has come under increased scrutiny.

Oblak, who saw his four-season stranglehold on the Zamora Trophy – awarded to the best goalkeeper in LaLiga – ended by Thibaut Courtois, has proven himself as one of the best in the world over six years at Atleti.

Cerezo: “Oblak has a contract with Atlético”
Cerezo is adamant the Slovenia international will stay at the Wanda Metropolitano, even when it was pointed out he once made similar assurances about Antoine Griezmann, who moved to Barcelona.

“I always say that Oblak has a contract with Atletico and is the best goalkeeper in the world. It is not strange that he has offers from other great teams,” Cerezo said.

“I say the same as always. Oblak has a contract, he is an Atletico player, period. We have many players, our squad is the club’s main asset. Oblak is a magnificent player and in his position, unquestionably, there is no one to beat him right now.

“For me, Oblak – and I speak as an amateur – is the best goalkeeper in the world. Regarding Courtois, he is another great goalkeeper of those in the world and fortunately, both have played for us and with both we have been champions in many trophies.”

Chelsea plans swap deals with Atletico ‘Kepa-Oblak’

Chelsea plans swap deals with Atletico ‘Kepa-Oblak’

Chelsea have reportedly made Jan Oblak their No 1 goalkeeper target this summer and would be willing to send Kepa Arrizabalaga to Atletico Madrid as part of any potential deal.

Kepa has endured a difficult season with manager Frank Lampard said to be losing faith in the Spaniard.

And The Mirror claim the Blues are now actively looking for a replacement.

The report says Atletico star Oblak has emerged as the first-choice option with a player-plus-cash deal being targeted.

Oblak, 27, has a £120m buy-out clause in the contract he signed last year, which expires in 2023.

The Slovenian has come to be regarded as one of the best keepers in the world over the past few years and it would take a huge offer to prize him away from the Wanda Metropolitano.

The Spanish club would not have considered selling but the effects of the pandemic could see them consider a substantial offer, particularly if it sees them gaining a replacement like Kepa.

Kepa has struggled with the physical nature of Premier League football and has not instilled confidence in Chelsea fans.

The 25-year-old was signed for a huge £71.5m but has not managed to live up to the price tag and, Lampard even dropping him earlier in the campaign to give Willy Caballero a run of games.

Goalkeeping has always been an important trade within the game, however, the standard at the moment seems to be higher than ever before.

If we look at the top divisions across Europe, they have a variety of world-class goalkeepers. But, two stand out over many in the last couple of years.

‘Keepers play an important role in “keeping” their sides in the game. It’s not just fantastic saves and clean sheets that make you a great ‘keeper, it’s what you do off the ball as well.

These aspects separate the world-class keepers from the average ones.

A recent poll on our official Facebook page was made to determine who is the best goalkeeper in the world between Liverpool’s Alisson and Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.

The results favour the Atletico ‘keeper with 57% believing that the Slovenian outclasses the Brazilian between the sticks.

This poll has had over 127k votes, which shows that fans have shown their appreciation to Oblak and regard him as the best goalkeeper in the world.

Both are top class, some of the saves they both make are incredible and made to look easy at the same time. Oblak just edges it with the votes, but Alisson is the second-best ‘keeper in the world by far.

The Slovenian Oblak has long been considered the finest goalkeeper in the world having joined Atlético Madrid in 2014. However, Alisson has been a revelation since his arrival at Anfield in 2018.PSX_20200423_202718

The Brazilian, along with Virgil van Dijk, have turned Liverpool into one of the most brutal defensive outfits in Europe, winning the Champions League and were champions-elect before the coronavirus pandemic halted proceedings.

One thing is for sure, fans need to appreciate the vast array of talent in the goalkeeping position around the world, and this could very much be the golden generation of goalkeeping, with these two out on their own at the moment.
