U.S Economy: Trump, Obama fights on Twitter. (Who deserves credit?)

President Donald Trump berated his predecessor, Barack Obama, as each sought credit Monday for the booming U.S. economy.

The robust U.S. economy – including the low 3.6% unemployment – is a central talking point for Trump on the campaign trail.

However, Obama appeared to take a subtle dig with a tweet earlier Monday marking the 11th anniversary of the 2009 economic stimulus.

“Eleven years ago today, near the bottom of the worst recession in generations, I signed the Recovery Act, paving the way for more than a decade of economic growth and the longest streak of job creation in American history,” Obama posted on Twitter.

Trump blasted back, accusing Obama of doing a ‘con job’.

“Did you hear the latest con job? President Obama is now trying to take credit for the Economic Boom taking place under the Trump Administration. He had the WEAKEST recovery since the Great Depression, despite Zero Fed Rate & MASSIVE quantitative easing. NOW, best jobs numbers….”

As USA Today reported, Democrats responded by praising Obama’s tweet and arguing that Trump is reaping the benefits of the work his predecessor did.

Republicans, however, accused Obama of seeking credit for Trump’s policies, an argument Trump echoed later.

“He had the WEAKEST recovery since the Great Depression, despite Zero Fed Rate & MASSIVE quantitative easing. NOW, best jobs numbers,” Trump posted of Obama.

Trump has argued that his emphasis on reducing regulations and the 2017 tax bill has spurred economic growth

Democrats noted that unemployment and stock prices began increasing under the Obama years as they bounced back from the Great Recession, a trend that continued into Trump’s presidency. Trump loyalists pointed out that the unemployment rate is at its lowest point in decades while the stock market has been hitting record highs.

“With an economy this good, it’s no wonder Barack Obama is trying to take credit,” Scalise said. “But I believe the saying is: ‘You didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.’ @realDonaldTrump made that happen.”

2019: Trump, Obama draws as most admired man, Michelle Obama, most admired woman.

A new Gallup survey released on Monday, December 30th found President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama tied as the most admired man of 2019.

However, Trump’s wife Melania failed to match the popularity of Obama’s wife, Michelle, who was named as the most admired woman for the second year. She had 10 percent of respondents naming her, down from 15 percent last year. Melania Trump came in second at 5 percent.

This is the first year Trump has risen to the top spot in the annual survey and the 12th year for Obama. Each was named by 18 percent of respondents to the open-ended survey conducted December 2-15.

Obama tied former President Dwight Eisenhower for the most times named as most admired man since the survey began in 1948.

The survey reflected the political divide in the nation, with 41 percent of Democrats naming Obama and 45 percent of Republicans naming Trump. The results also reflect Trump’s rise in popularity, with a 45 percent job approval rating up from 40 percent in 2018 and 36 percent in 2017, Gallup noted.

Other men in the Top 10 this year were former President Jimmy Carter, businessman Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Pope Francis, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, California Rep. Adam Schiff, the Dalai Lama and investor Warren Buffett, though none earned mentions from more than 2 percent of respondents.

Among women, talk show host Oprah Winfrey, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and teen climate change activist Greta Thunberg tied with mentions from 3 percent of respondents, followed by Queen Elizabeth II, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.

Obama and Trump’s book-list compared

(CNN)Former President Barack Obama has published his list of favorite books of 2019. The former president, who was known to read an hour a day toward the end of his presidency, has curated a selection that he noted on Instagram is part of the “fabric that helps make up a life” and can hopefully “enhance our day-to-day experiences.”

What a contrast to President Donald Trump’s list of books, which he recently promoted on Twitter.
While the books that Obama recommends will make readers more well-rounded and informed, Trump’s list is filled with books that will make the reader angrier and more supportive of Trump. (Even as President, when Obama released his summer reading list, the titles ranged from books about former President John Adams to novels like, “The Bayou Trilogy.” None were explicitly about Obama’s political agenda or attacking his political rivals.)

Let’s take a closer look at Obama’s 2019 list. They include works of fiction, such as “Normal People,” a story of two starkly different people from the same small town who must confront how far they will go to support each other. There’s also the award-winning novel, “Trust Exercise,” by Susan Choi, the story of students in the 1980s at a competitive performing arts high school that the Amazon description notes “will leave readers with wiser understandings of the true capacities of adolescents and of the powers and responsibilities of adults.”

Barrack Obama says women makes better leadership.

Barack Obama has said women make better leaders than men.

The former US President, while speaking in Singapore, said women aren’t perfect, but are “indisputably better” than men. He added that if women ran every country in the world there would be a general improvement in living standards and outcomes.

He said most of the problems in the world came from old people, mostly men, holding onto positions of power. He also spoke about political polarisation and the use of social media to spread falsehoods.

Women make better leaders than men - Barack Obama says

Speaking at the private event on leadership, Mr Obama said while in office he had mused what a world run by women would look like.

He said:

Now women, I just want you to know; you are not perfect, but what I can say pretty indisputably is that you’re better than us [men].

I’m absolutely confident that for two years if every nation on earth was run by women, you would see a significant improvement across the board on just about everything… living standards and outcomes.

When asked if he would ever consider going back into political leadership, he said he believed in leaders stepping aside when the time came.

He said:

If you look at the world and look at the problems it’s usually old people, usually old men, not getting out of the way.

It is important for political leaders to try and remind themselves that you are there to do a job, but you are not there for life, you are not there in order to prop up your own sense of self importance or your own power.

Michelle Obama Speaks Out On Donald Trump’s Impeachment Proceedings, Says It Is Surreal.

…We’ve seen worse times

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has described the current impeachment hearings against US President Donald Trump as ‘surreal’, her first comments about the political situation since it started.

Trump is being investigated by the US House of Representatives for alleged bribery and obstruction of Justice as regards a July phone call where he allegedly withheld military aid to Ukraine in anticipation of the Ukraine government investigating his political rival, Joe Biden, and on Monday that House started Improvement hearings, with Democrats hopeful of Trump’s impeachment before the year’s end.

The former First Lady, now 55, spoke with host Jenna Bush Hager on the Today show on Monday from Vietnam as during her first public overseas trip since leaving the White House.

When asked what she thought of the impeachment hearings currently engulfing Trump she said: ‘It’s surreal I think. The last impeachment hearing, a lot of young people weren’t around for that. So this is all new, I don’t think people know what to make of it.

‘But do I think we can come back from it? Oh yeah. We’ve seen worse times. We’ve seen tough times in this country. We’ve gone through depressions and wars and bombings and terrorist attacks and we’ve gone through Jim Crow – and we’ve always come out stronger.’

And that’s what we have to continue to believe because what’s our choice? To ball up in a corner and call it a day? Well that’s not fair to this next generation coming before us that are counting on us to get this right,’ Obama said.

‘It’s not an “us or them,” it’s not an “R or a D” (Republican or Democrat), we are all here as part of this country. We all want the same things, it’s just sometimes that gets lost in the noise,’ she continued.
