Nigeria – Lagos extend COVID-19 relief materials to artisans, traders.

The Lagos State Government has distributed COVID-19 relief materials to residents registered as members of the informal sector.

The Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs Yetunde Arobieke said the relief materials were presented to the representatives of the leadership of the various associations.

They are grouped under the umbrella of Lagos State Council for Tradesmen and Artisans (LASCOTA).

She said that the gesture was meant to assist the beneficiaries in feeding their family and other dependants while the order lasted.

Arobieke extolled the contributions of the informal sector groups to the economic prosperity of the state and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country as a whole.

She said that the association of tradesmen and artisans was one of the worst-hit group by the pandemic and stay-at-home order.

The commissioner said that a chunk of the members were owners of small and medium scale enterprises who relied solely on daily earnings.

”It is in recognition of the important roles played by the sector that the State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, directed that the relief materials be extended to members of the association, to cushion the effect which the restriction of movement might have had on their means of livelihood,” she said.

Arobieke advised members of the informal sector to organise themselves and register their association with the state government.

According to her, such information will serve as data and a platform for government to extend privileges and benefits to the entire group.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Boladele Dapo-Thomas, urged LASCOTA to continue to cooperate with government in its quest to bring the present situation under control.

Dapo-Thomas assured them of continued support from Lagos State, while calling on the leadership of the association to be orderly in the distribution of the relief materials.

She urged members of the association to remain compliant with the stay-at-home directive, maintain social distancing and embrace basic hygiene practices.

Nigerian government grant 2,600 inmates bail.

The Nigerian Federal Government has granted amnesty to no fewer than 2,600 prison inmates as part of measures to de-congest prison facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Buhari grants pardon

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, announced this at a press conference which held at the headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service in Abuja today, April 9.

According to the Minister, those eligible for the pardon include inmates that are 60 years and above; those suffering from ill-health likely to result in death; convicts serving three years and above and have less than six months to serve; inmates with mental issues; and inmates with an option of fine not exceeding N50,000.

President Buhari grants pardon

Aregbesola said that out of the said number, 70 inmates will be released today from Kuje maximum custodial centre.

“In a symbolic gesture of the amnesty given to the 2,600 inmates across Nigeria, 41 Federal inmates and 29 FCT inmates making a total of 70 inmates who met the above criteria will be released today from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja. This amnesty will not apply to inmates sentenced for violent extreme offences such as terrorism, kidnapping, armed banditry, rape, human trafficking, culpable homicide and so on.

The Governors of the 36 states under whose jurisdiction most of the inmates were incarcerated will complete the exercise in line with the federal principle.” he said

NWC: Oshiomhole absent at APC meeting.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC) met, yesterday, without the suspended National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole and loyalist.

The meeting chaired by the Acting National Secretary, Victor Giadom, lasted for several hours with eight members of the NWC- National Vice Chairman, North East, Salihu Mustapha; National Vice Chairman, South West, Bankole Oluwajana; National Youth Leader, Abubakar Sadiq; National Woman Leader, Hajiya Salamatu Beiwa and the party’s acting National Auditor, Isa-Modu Chul- in attendance.

Because of the meeting, the party’s national headquarters recorded an appreciable number of visitors including APC Edo State Chairman, Anslem Ojezua.

The party’s national leadership did not brief journalists on reason for the meeting, it was, however, learnt that those who met were preparing for next week’s emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Meanwhile, APC Forum of State Chairmen has denied passing a vote of confidence and endorsing the continuation of the embattled national chairman.

The development comes barely a day after the group allegedly backed the former Edo governor. It would, however, appear that it was a faction of the forum headed by Ali Dalori and Ben Nwoye that had passed the vote of confidence on Monday.

In a twist of event, the chairman in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Lawal Liman, said members never met to deliberate on issues pertaining to the suspended chairman.

He said some members of the forum had been calling to find out the veracity of the statement immediately it was issued.

Lawan dismissed the vote of confidence as a fraud saying they would, however, meet to harmonise their thought before the March 17 emergency NEC.

“l have told them that no such thing happened and that they should disregard the statement. We had agreed, in the past, that nobody should issue a statement in the name of the forum of state chairmen of the APC if the chairmen did not meet and accept the release of such statement,” Liman said.

He charged members to exercise patience, with the hope that the crisis, in the party, would soon be resolved.

“All issues would be resolved at the next NEC meeting and, hopefully, we will hold a meeting of the forum before the said NEC meeting. We will not, in any way, bring the name of the forum to disrepute by doing what will take away our credibility,” he said.
