LASU student killed for ritual purpose to be reburied in Lagos tomorrow

The body of Favour Daley-Oladele, a final-year LASU student, who was allegedly murdered for money rituals by her boyfriend, Adeeko Owolabi, at a church in Ikoyi-Ile in Osun State, on December 8, will be buried in Lagos on Tuesday January 7th.

Her family took the decison to give her a befitting burial after her body was exhumed by the police for further investigations over the weekend.

Favour who was in a relationship with Owolabi, was lured to a church in Ikoyi-Ile in Osun state and murdered by Owolabi and his herbalist, Segun Williams, who disguised as a prophet. After killing her, they cut vital organs from her body which was used to prepare concoctions that Owolabi and his mother, Ruth, allegedly drank. They have all been arrested by the police and would be arraigned in court soon.

Ritual culprit, Adeeko Owolabi that killed and ate girlfriend’s heart gives original story

Adeeko Owolabi, the 22-year-old man who alongside one Prophet Segun Phillips, allegedly killed his girlfriend, Miss Favour Daley-Oladele, a final year Theatre Arts student of Lagos State University (LASU), has shared gory details of how he carried out the dastard act.

Adeeko and Phillips as well as his mother, Ruth, today January 4th, took the police to the shallow grave where Favour’s body was buried after she was killed on December 8th. When the body was exhumed, the head, the two breasts, neck and part of the two legs of late Favour had been removed by the suspects.

Speaking to newsmen, Adeeko said he lured the deceased to Ikoyi-Ile where the prophet’s church is located and lodged her in a hotel before killing her.

” After I lodged her in a guest house, I took her to a house which I claimed to be my uncle’s house, knowing fully well that the place was a ritualist’s den. I smashed a pestle on her head and she collapsed. The prophet thereafter used a knife and cutlass to dismember her body which was divided into three parts breasts, head and legs with other vital parts. We buried the remaining part of her body beside Prophet Philip’s Church called ‘Solution Salvation Chapel’, while some vital parts was given to my mother to eat for spiritual cleansing” he said

Also speaking to newsmen, the prophet who claimed to be the Senior clergyman at Solution Salvation Chapel, said the deceased was murdered to make money rituals for Owolabi. According to him, he used the church as a cover up

”I am not a prophet but a herbalist who engages in spiritual cleansing for whomsoever come to my place. I used the Solution Salvation Chapel as a cover up not to allow people know the true picture of who I am and what I do. Owolabi came to my place for money rituals and I told him that we need a complete human being for the rituals. And on December 8, he brought his girlfriend to my church and we killed her and as well dismembered her body part for money rituals” he said

On her part, Adeeko’s mother, said she was not aware that her son was involved in rituals.

Stand Accord – France asks Iran after Soleimani’s death

France urged Tehran Saturday to stick with a landmark nuclear accord at risk of falling apart, the day after Washington killed a top Iranian commander in Baghdad.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said he had discussed the issue with his Chinese and German colleagues, hoping to avoid escalation of an already intense stand-off between Iran and the United States.

“France fully shares with Germany the central objective of de-escalation and preservation of the Vienna (nuclear) accord,” Le Drian said in a statement.

With China, “we in particular noted our agreement… to urge Iran to avoid any new violation of the Vienna accord,” he added.

The 2015 agreement negotiated between Iran and the UN Security Council permanent members — Britain, France, China, Russia and the United States — plus Germany offered Tehran relief from stinging sanctions in return for curbs to prevent it acquiring nuclear weapons.

US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal last year and reimposed even more sanctions on Iran, which in turn has progressively dropped key commitments in the accord, including limits on uranium stock and enrichment levels.

Tehran recently announced that it would take a further step away from the accord in early January and this was widely expected to be announced on Monday.

The European Union, which helped broker the 2015 deal, has been trying to keep the accord alive despite the US withdrawal, but analysts say that now looks increasingly unlikely after the US killed Major General Qasem Soleimani, a key Iranian figure.

Update: We murdered Qasem Soleimani to stop a disaster – Trump

...not to start a war

President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States killed top Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani to stop a war.

Addressing newsmen in Florida, Trump alleged that Soleimani was “plotting imminent and sinister attacks on American diplomats and military personnel, but we caught him in the act and terminated him”.

Blaming Soleimani for the death of hundreds of American civilians and servicemen, the president said he should have been killed long ago to save many lives.

“For years, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its ruthless Quds Force, under Soleimani’s leadership, has targeted, injured, and murdered hundreds of American civilians and servicemen.

“The recent attacks on U.S. targets in Iraq, including rocket strikes that killed an American and injured four American servicemen very badly, as well as a violent assault on our embassy in Baghdad, were carried out at the direction of Soleimani.

“Soleimani made the death of innocent people his sick passion, contributing to terrorist plots as far away as New Delhi and London”, Trump said.

He said the late military general had been carrying out acts of terror to destabilise the Middle East for the last 20 years.

“Just recently, Soleimani led the brutal repression of protestors in Iran, where more than a thousand innocent civilians were tortured and killed by their own government.

“We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war.

“I have deep respect for the Iranian people. They are a remarkable people, with an incredible heritage and unlimited potential,” he said.

Trump noted that although the U.S. was not seeking a regime change in Iran, the “Iranian regime’s aggression in the region, including the use of proxy fighters to destabilise its neighbors, must end, and it must end now”.

NobleReporters reports that there is tension in the Gulf over the killing, with Iran vowing “severe revenge” on those responsible.

Iran’s National Security Council has also vowed to effect “harsh vengeance” on the U.S. for the killing.

“The U.S. regime will be responsible for the consequences of this criminal adventurism.

“This was the biggest US strategic blunder in the West Asia region, and America will not easily escape its consequences.”

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has urged American citizens to “depart Iraq immediately” following the airstrike.

U.S. officials said thousands of additional troops would be deployed to the Middle East as a precaution.

World leaders, including UN Secretary General António Guterres, have called for restraint by all parties to prevent another war in the region.

Wife’s alleged death caused by man using eye drops.

…faces charges of first-degree murder.

Authorities in North Carolina say a man who worked as a paramedic is accused of using eye drops to kill his wife last year.

Joshua Lee Hunsucker, 35, of Mount Holly, was arrested Thursday in the September 23, 2018, killing of Stacy Robinson Hunsucker, 32, the North Carolina Department of Insurance said in a statement. Joshua Hunsucker faces charges of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said at a preliminary hearing Friday that Stacy Hunsucker’s body contained a suspicious amount of an active ingredient that is found in eye drop medication, which can cause heart failure when ingested in large quantities, according to NBC affiliate WCNC in Charlotte.

Jordan Green, an attorney for the North Carolina Department of Insurance, said at the hearing that after Stacy Hunsucker’s blood tested positive for a chemical found in eye drops, investigators interrogated Joshua Hunsucker. Green said he gave investigators enough information for them to arrest him, WCNC reported.

“I don’t know that he would characterize it as a confession, but it certainly approached that level,” Green said in court.

Joshua Hunsucker’s attorney, David Teddy, declined to comment on the case to NBC News on Monday. He said in court Friday that he anticipates the case will be “strenuously opposed.” Teddy said his client is a lead paramedic with Atrium Health and has no criminal record. He also said Joshua Hunsucker has been placed on administrative leave while his employer investigates potential misconduct.

Barry White, assistant director of public affairs for the North Carolina Office of Insurance, said Monday that Stacy Hunsucker’s death was tied to a $250,000 life insurance payout.

Tragedy as Gunmen attacked GEJ hometown in Bayelsa.

… killed 1 soldier, injures 1

Gunmen numbering 20 in the wee hours of Tuesday attacked the country home of former President Goodluck Jonathan in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area killing one soldier and injuring another.

The gunmen according to investigation had thrown dynamite into the compound before they invaded it from the water side at about 2am shortly after Jonathan left to sleep in his house in Yenagoa.

Eye-witness account said after they threw the dynamite into the compound the gunmen approached the house from the waterside at the back and went for the gun at the gunboat but unfortunately the gun was not mounted.

It was then two soldiers stationed at the back sighted them and a heavy shoot-out commenced with the gunmen.

The eye-witness account said if not for the timely intervention of the other soldiers that were coming to the back of the house with the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), the gunmen would have entered the compound and kill everybody inside.

“The gunmen opened fire on the soldiers and the soldiers replied. It was a heavy shootout. The Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) positioned in from of the house, made a u-turn blaring siren to join his men behind the house. The soldiers while engaging the gunmen at the back of the house were not aware some gunmen were coming into the house on land. Those gunmen on foot shot dead a soldier and shot another in the leg. The gunmen, escaped after sighting the APC moving to reinforce the soldiers. The gunmen abandoned a boat filled with blood. The gunmen suffered heavy causalities because at the jetty blood was everywhere and some watching from inside the house saw the gunmen moving some bodies of their colleagues into another boat.”

Many residents of Otuoke who were thrown into panic commended the soldiers for their gallantry at repelling the attack from the gunmen.

Jonathan who was at the scene with Commander of the 3rd Brigade, Elele and the Bayelsa Commissioner of Police was shocked at the incident and motive behind it.

The Operation Delta Safe, Joint Task Force is working to issue a statement on the incident.

Jamal Khashoggi’s death: Corruption in Saudi Arabia as Crown prince declared unguilty.

Human Rights Groups and Turkey have come out to slam a verdict by a Saudi High court absolving crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman of any wrong doing in the 2018 murder of Wasshington post journalist and fierce MBS critic, Jamal Khashoggi.

The Crown Prince’s right hand man, Saud al-Qahtani, widely regarded as the mastermind of the operation was also cleared by the court of all involvement on Monday, according to a government organized news conference in the State capital, Riyadh.

(Read first story here)

Prosecutors said there would be no charges brought against him because “no evidence” existed.

At the time of Khashoggi’s brutal murder Qahtani was Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s senior adviser, so clearing him of wrong doing automatically clears MBS of wrong doing because he was Bin Salman’s right hand man.

Rights groups decry Saudi court verdict on Jamal Khashoggi murder after 5 people are sentenced to death, but Saudi Crown Prince is cleared of any wrong doing?

“The investigation showed that the killing was not premeditated … The decision was taken at the spur of the moment,” Saudi Deputy Public Prosecutor Shalaan al-Shalaan said, a verdict contradicting the findings of a United Nations and United States-led investigation that found that Mohammed Bin Salman, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia gave the order for the journalist’s killing.

Khashoggi, was killed inside Saudi Arabia’s consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul by a team of Saudi agents when he went to process documents for his planned marriage. He never left the consulate alive as he was drugged and dismembered inside before his remains were deposited in a yet to be found place.

The US CIA, Turkey, the UN, the EU all accused the Saudi Arabian government headed by Mohammed Bin Salman of being behind the gruesome murder, and after weeks of denail, Saudi Arabia later accepted they had carried out the murder.

The Saudi authorities said it was the result of a “rogue operation” and put 11 unnamed individuals on trial, but denied MBS was aware of the operation.

The Saudi prosecutor’s office on Monday said a total of 31 people were investigated in connection with the killing, and that 11 people were charged. Three were handed jail terms totalling 24 years and the rest were acquitted. None of the defendants’ names was immediately released by the court.

Ahmed Benchemsi, spokesman for Human Rights Watch, told Al Jazeera that the trial was “all but satisfactory”.

The case was “shrouded in secrecy since the beginning, and it’s still … until now … We do not know the identities of those masked perpetrators, we don’t know the specific charge levelled against who exactly,” Benchemsi said.

“Saudi prosecutors did not even attempt to investigate the upper levels of this crime, and whether they played a role in ordering the killing, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman,” he added.

Agnes Callamard, the UN special rapporteur on summary executions, said the sentence “is anything but justice”.

“Under international human rights law, the killing of Khashoggi was an extrajudicial execution for which the state of Saudi Arabia is responsible,” she wrote on Twitter.

“Bottom line: the hit-men are guilty, sentenced to death. The masterminds not only walk free. They have barely been touched by the investigation and the trial. That is the antithesis of Justice. It is a mockery,” said Callamard, who does not speak for the UN but reports her findings to it.

Christophe Deloire, the Secretary General of Paris-based media rights watchdog Reporters Without Borders said that the sentences “can be interpreted as a means to permanently silence the suspects, a way to prevent them from speaking to better cover up the truth”.

“The opacity of the procedure and the concealment of evidence does not allow us to get an idea” of why several others were convicted or acquitted, said Deloire, adding: “We still expect a full accounting.”

Turkey, responding to the verdict said those responsible for the murder had been granted immunity.

“Those who dispatched a death squad to Istanbul on a private jet … and sought to sweep this murder under the rug have been granted immunity,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s top press aide, Fahrettin Altun, wrote on Twitter.

5 suspected Jamal Khashoggi killers sentenced to death.

Five persons were on Monday sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for the murder of journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, the country’s public prosecutor said.

Another three persons were also sentenced to a total of 24 years in jail.

The US resident and critic of Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, was killed at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 2018 after trying to pick up a marriage document for he and his Turkish fiancé.

After weeks of repeated denials that it had anything to do with his disappearance, the kingdom eventually acknowledged that its officials were behind the gruesome murder.

Meanwhile, the United States on Monday welcomed the death sentences handed down to the killers of journalist.

“Today’s verdicts were an important step in holding those responsible for this terrible crime accountable,” a State Department official told reporters after the ruling, which was lambasted as a travesty by Turkey, rights groups, and The Washington Post, to which Khashoggi contributed.

The court however, exonerated two top aides to Saudi Arabia’s powerful Crown Prince, whom the US considers responsible for Khashoggi’s murder.

NAN exonerate Fayemi’s wife over FUOYE killings.

…give ‘stay away’ order

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has exonerated wife of Ekiti Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi of involvement in the recent killings of two students of Federal University, Oye Ekiti.

The students’ body also lifted an order warning Governor Kayode Fayemi and his wife to stay away from all the tertiary institutions in the country.

Two FUOYE students, Joseph Okonofua and Kehinde Dada were on September 10 allegedly shot dead during a protest that coincided with the visit of Mrs. Fayemi to Oye Ekiti, which led to confrontation between the First Lady’s security details and students.

The incident forced the NANS to make a public statement directing students to henceforth treat Fayemi and his wife as persona non grata in all tertiary institutions.

A communiqué by NANS’ Senate President, Gambo Abubakar Mohammed and Clerk, Kabiru Mohammed after its Senate meeting in Ado Ekiti on Monday, said neither Fayemi nor his wife knew anything about the death of the students.

The SUG President Federal University, Lokoja , Kogi State moved a motion for the lifting of the order, seconded by SUG President of Niger State College of Education, Zakari Mohammed.

It was later affirmed by other Senators at the plenary.

Exonerating Fayemi and wife further, NANS said: “Ekiti State government has taken the responsibilities of paying for hospital bills of all injured students and for the burial arrangement of the deceased.

“The government also visited the deceased’s families and compensated them while processing the employment opportunity two members of the bereaved families.

“We realised that it is time to move on and allow the sleeping dog lies in the interest of peace and love among all those that were involved”.

The students appealed to Fayemi to fulfill his promises to those who suffered any form of calamity during the incident.

The Senators also lamented the death of a students’ leader, Com. Yemi Adeniran, who died in a ghastly motor accident, saying the deceased did well as a member of the SUG during his lifetime.

Gunmen murdered 8 in former senator’s commune.

…over 100 people flee

Barely one week after armed bandits abducted two expatriates and six others working for former Senator David Umaru, armed men suspected to be bandits have attacked Umaru’s community, Kaure, Kwaki Ward in Shiroro Local Government Area.

The bandits killed eight other villagers in the attack, which occurred in the early hours of yesterday.

Over 100 members of the community, including women and children, were said to have fled to safety.

The councilor representing the ward, Malam Jafaru Kwaki, told our correspondent on phone yesterday afternoon that the bandits stormed the community on motorcycles with three persons on each at about 7am shooting sporadically into the air.

He said: “I just received the sad development of an invasion again of a community in my area by armed men dressed in black. This is another deadly attack after two expatriates and six members of the community were abducted and are yet to regain their freedom almost 10 days now.

“As has been their manner, they stormed the community on motorcycles, shooting. From the information at my disposal, eight people have lost their lives in the attack, which lasted hours.

“We cannot ascertain the number of people injured in the attack yet because many escaped into the bushes with bullet wounds but we were able to move 15 who sustained various degrees of injuries to health centres.”

The attack in the community is the 15th in the last 10 months with an estimated 200 people so far killed while about 5,000 others, mostly women and children, have been forced to abandon their homes. The last attack was the abduction of two foreigners and six others in Erena, Shiroro local government area.

The two expatriate construction workers were said be handling the contraction work on the 52 kilometers roads from Erena town to Kaure village, a border town between Niger and Kaduna states, cutting across over 200 villages.

The counselor disclosed that the attackers rustled cows, dispossessed locals of cash and foodstuff at gunpoint.

“They burnt two vehicles, five machines and some houses in the attack,” he also disclosed.

He said many locals were missing with search parties hurriedly put together, combing bushes for them, while others were being evacuated to safe locations.

Our correspondent also gathered that the attack is coming even when locals displaced in the recent attacks across eight communities in Rafi and Shiroro local government areas are still in the internally displaced persons camps in Kuta, Kagara and Gudu communities.

The attacks, which happened three weeks ago claimed 13 lives in Kukoki, Shiroro local government area alone, while the district head of Madaka, Alhaji Zakari Yau, his wife, the village head of Kukoki and four others, including the secretary of the district council and a retired soldier were kidnapped.

Kwaki called on the state government and the military to urgently come to the aid of the district and entire Shiroro and Rafi local government areas by deploying troops to the areas which he said, have been under siege for a long time.

Although the police could not be immediately reached for comment on the attack, the senator representing the zone, Senator Sani Musa condemned the latest attack, describing it as one attack too many.

He said it high time military came to the rescue of the people, stressing: “All indications is that something urgent must be done before the people are completely wipe out. I am highly worried about the growing insecurity in the area”.

Meanwhile the Niger State Emergency Agency (NSEMA) said it had activated emergency response mechanism to deal with the situation.

The Director General of the agency, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmed Inga, said his office is yet to receive report of casualty of the latest attack.

A new report on the persecution of Christians in Nigeria has found that about 1,000 adherents of the Christian faith have been killed by Islamic militants in 2019 alone.

The Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART), headed by a member of the British House of Lords, Baroness Cox, discovered that believers in the North and Central region of Nigeria were the most severely affected.

The group said the constant attack of “harmless” persons, especially worshipers and clerics portends danger for Christianity as it has ignited fears in clerics deployed to the northeast to work.

In its end of the year report, the group recounted the killing in August of Reverend Father David Tanko and many others in the northern part of the country, adding that over 1000 Christians have been killed in 2019

Recently, they explained that suspected terrorists had threatened to attack other clerics, including a missionary sister identified as Sister Chioma Ibe after the killing of Fr Pius Ani.

Fr Pius Ani and Sr Chioma Ibe, it was learnt, were two Catholic missionaries whose work in the northern part of Nigeria had drawn a lot of accolades and admiration but had also exposed them to the Boko Haram terrorist group.

The killed priest was a pastor of St Theresa Catholic Church in Maiduguri, Borno State, working with Sr Chioma Ibe, who is the principal of the parish school.

Both the priest and the nun were said to be working with youths by converting the youths and adults of that town to the Catholic faith. The parish school is open to both Christians and Muslims.

It was learnt that with their teachings many were converted to Catholicism and embracing the Christian doctrine, with no fewer than 50 students administered with the sacrament of baptism and welcomed into the Catholic Church and receiving the first communion

According to reports, the popularity of these missionaries has spread widely to the predominantly Muslim state, exposing them to the threat of the Islamic fundamentalist group who have made several unsuccessful attempts to kill both missionaries.

This led to the priest and nun being transferred out from the northern part to another church in the south where they both continued their good work of ministering in the church and also managing the parish school.

According to the reports: “Islamist Fulani militia continue to engage in an aggressive and strategic land grabbing policy in Plateau, Benue, Taraba, Southern Kaduna and parts of Bauchi state.

“They attack rural villages, force villagers off their lands and settle in their place — a strategy that is epitomized by the phrase: «your land or your blood.”

According to HART, the exact number of Christians killed by Islamic militants Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen was unknown, though the data suggests the figure to be sitting at around 1,000 for the year. The organization believes that some 6,000 have been killed since 2015, and with an additional 12,000 displaced.

“In every village, the message from local people is the same: ‘Please, please help us! The Fulani are coming. We are not safe in our own homes,” HART said in the report.

65 years Former NNPC staff killed by farm workers in his farm.

Ibrahim Ajayi Allah, a 65-year-old ex-staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was reportedly killed in his farm by his worker.

The deceased who was killed on December 13 by one of the workers at his farm in Oke-Oyi, outskirts of Ilorin, retired from the finance department of the NNPC.

The deceased’s younger brother Yakub Abejide Allah who confirmed his death, said;

“My elder brother was murdered on December 13th on his farm site in Oke-Oyi area of Ilorin East local government area of the state.

“Three years ago, he retired and chose to pursue agriculture which has always been his passion. He bought hectares of land in Ogidi, Kabba/Bunu local government area of Kogi State and poured all his passion into it. However, because of so many unanticipated factors, the returns were not as expected.

“About six months ago, he decided to gradually move out of Ogidi. So he bought about eight hectares of land at Oke-Oyi near Ilorin and restarted his farming there.

“The suspect picked up by the police is a man from that community with whom he had developed a close relationship. He was always going in and out with the man. In fact, on the day of the murder, they were said to be together and had lunch together before he was savagely axed to death at about 5pm.

“When the police searched the suspect’s house, they found my brother’s phone and other personal effects. He is said to have confessed to having killed my brother.

“I felt so bad when I heard the news of my brother’s gruesome killing. It was the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Oke-Oyi Police Station that narrated how my brother was hacked to death.

“Subsequently, I called his wife and our other family members and broke the sad news to them. The police said they have arrested the alleged perpetrator of the heinous crime. According to them, he was initially detained at the Oke-Oyi police station before being transferred to the state Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Ilorin.

Wife of the deceased said she became worried when she did not get the usual morning call from her husband.

“He usually calls me in the morning. He called me on Friday morning. When I didn’t get his call on Saturday morning, I called his lines and none were reachable. Later, one rang and someone picked it and said my husband had an accident and that his phone was with the police and they asked me to come there. I linked them to my husband’s brother in Ilorin before I arrived there.

“By the time I got there, it was already 8pm and I was told he was in the hospital. When I asked to see him, that was when my husband’s brother told me that he was dead.

“A farmer suspected something and called the local vigilante group who reported to the police. When the police came, they saw his car and his phone. That was how I was able to call his number.

“I saw the suspect, his name is Waheed. He actually confessed to committing the crime. I asked him what my husband did to him and he said nothing, that he did not know what came over him. He said my husband used to help him and even promised to buy him a car,” she said.

“He (the deceased) used to squat with the suspect because he is new there. He just arrived six months ago. They used to stay together and go to the farm together until he got his own apartment two months ago. A machete stained with my husband’s blood and his phone were found in his house. He also had wounds on his body and that was how they knew that he was the one who killed him.

“The Oke-Oyi police said they were going to transfer the case to a bigger police station. They had already brought the documents when I was there but since then, I have not heard anything. He has already confessed that he killed my husband and I just want justice. It may be that there are other people involved in the killing.

“I asked for my husband’s body because it was already decomposing and we buried him on Monday.”

The convicts, who have been in custody for seven years, murdered Ekun by strangling her and throwing her body into a 1,000-feet well.

Justice Raliatu Adebiyi said the prosecution proved the charges of conspiracy and murder beyond reasonable doubt.

She said: “The circumstantial evidence was strong and cogent; the act of the defendants in killing the deceased was intentional and premeditated. The court finds that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt the offences of conspiracy and murder, and the defendants are accordingly found guilty of the two-count charge.”

Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, prescribes that a person, who commits the offence of murder shall be sentenced to death. Same is the punishment for conspiracy to commit murder as contained in Section 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The judge said the provisions of the above section do not give the court any discretion whatsoever in sentencing the defendants. For this reason, she said, the first and second defendants are hereby sentenced to death by hanging. “May God, the giver of life, have mercy on your souls,” she said.

According to the prosecution led by Mr. Akin George, the convicts committed the murder around 1am on October 17, 2012, at the home of the deceased located at No. 5, Babatunde Lalega Street, Omole Phase One, Lagos State.

The prosecution said the deceased employed the Prince as the manager of her restaurant while Balogun, the second defendant, is her former domestic staff.

According to the prosecution, “the convicts conspired, killed the deceased and threw her body in a well within the premises of her home, and took over her businesses and property, including a bus, which was sold for N170,000.

“When any inquiry was made by family and friends about her whereabouts, Oyekan informed them that she travelled to Abuja for the Ileya (Eid-el Kabir) festival. He passed this information by sending a text message from Ekun’s mobile phone.

“Following worry from members of Ekun’s family, and after an extensive search, her body was found two months later, in December 2012, by well diggers and fire fighters. The convicts had placed a generator, a gas cylinder and other household items on the body to conceal it in the 1,000 feet well,” he said.
