Müller corrects Hansi flick: ‘You can’t stop Messi with just one player’

Thomas Muller has admitted that Bayern Munich will have to be thorough in their job of stopping Lionel Messi on Friday.

The Barcelona captain was instrumental as Barcelona progressed past Napoli in the last 16 of the Champions League.

“The main thing I want to say is that Messi is in form and he’s not a player that you can defend with just one player,” Muller said in his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

“From my experience, you can only defend against him as a team.

“If he goes past the first [player], the second one can stop him.

“If not, the third one can and, in the meantime, the first and second players recover their position and go back after him.

“You can’t defend against him with just one person.

“We have to be aggressive in duels.

“It will be exciting and interesting.

“We’ll see how it works and how everything goes.

“If you watch our recent games, you can see that we’ve always defended well.

“It’s not just Messi, it’s the whole Barcelona team we have to stop.”

Muller has competed for a place in the team with Barcelona loanee Philippe Coutinho this season.

“Philippe is key,” the German added.

“He’s very important for us.

“He’s part of our team.

“Everyone knows the quality he has.

“The [starting] 11 is important, but so are the player who come off the bench, who can decide the game.

“You have the example of PSG last night.”

‘Lewandowski is more better than Messi this time’ – Müller

Bayern Munich forward Thomas Mueller believes Robert Lewandowski can prove he is better than Barcelona’s Lionel Messi in next week’s Champions League last-eight tie.

Lewandowski has been in the form of his career this season, netting 53 goals in just 44 games in all competitions for the German champions – and scored twice Bayern’s 4-1 Champions League win over Chelsea on Saturday.

Barcelona captain Messi also scored in the Champions League on Saturday night with a sensational solo goal, as the Catalans beat Napoli 4-1 on aggregate to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final contest against the Bundesliga giants.

When Mueller was asked whether Lewandowski is the best all-round attacker in the world right now, he said: ‘We’ll see that on Friday. Lewy will have to answer this question.

‘Messi also played very well today. But it’s up to Lewy and us to answer this question in Lewy’s favour on Friday.’

Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick was also delighted with Lewandowski’s contributions in the win over Chelsea, describing the Polish forward as a vital component of his side.

The head coach said: ‘We would not mind if he continued like this. He showed again today how important he is for us.

‘He not only scored two goals, but also assisted two goals. We are very happy that we have him in our team.’

Winning the Champions League would cap off a brilliant season for Bayern Munich, who have already lifted the Bundesliga and German Cup trophies this term.

It is a different story for Messi’s Barcelona, who failed to win a domestic trophy during the 2019-20 after conceding the league title to rivals Real Madrid and being knocked out of the Copa Del Rey by Athletic Bilbao in February.

Despite this disappointment, Mueller says the La Liga side should not be underestimated by Bayern ahead of the last-eight contest on Friday.

Mueller added: ‘Barca may not have won the Spanish championship and they have certainly revealed some problems.

But anything can happen in these knockout games. Any run can end there if you have a bad day.’
