Just in: Protest full London over increasing ‘Racism’ #BLM

Advertisements

Hundreds of Black Lives Matter protesters marched through the streets of London, blocking traffic outside Notting Hill tube station and lying down in the road staging die-in.

The “Million People March” is advocating against racial injustice and is taking place instead of this year’s Notting Hill carnival.

Organisers have said the event is more important than ever amid the worldwide campaign for justice after George Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis.

Naomi Bennett, protester and nurse spoke to the press;

“I’ve known about deaths in custody of black people, from when I was, from back in the 90s. We’ve been protesting all these years. Fortunately the George Floyd (death), has just highlighted that to the rest of the world. Now this is a fight that is not new to black people in this country.”

Aside from highlighting racial injustice in the UK, organisers said the march was also to denounce forthcoming government spending on prisons.

The “Million People March” was held in place of the annual Notting Hill Carnival, which will be streamed online this year due to coronavirus restrictions.

Notting Hill Carnival is Europe’s biggest street fair, tracing its roots to the late 1950s.

The Million People March comes the day after thousands of people gathered in Trafalgar Square in central London to protest against lockdown restrictions and the wearing of face masks.

COVID-19: Tesco supermarket unveils 16,000 jobs

Advertisements

Tesco will create 16,000 permanent UK jobs to meet a coronavirus-fuelled surge in online grocery demand, the supermarket giant said Monday in a boost for the country’s embattled retail sector.

Britain’s biggest retailer added in a statement that it expects “the majority” of jobs to be filled by temporary staff drafted in during the pandemic to cope with soaring home food deliveries amid the country’s lockdown.

“Since the start of the pandemic, our colleagues have helped us to more than double our online capacity, safely serving nearly 1.5 million customers every week and prioritising vulnerable customers to ensure they get the food they need,” said Jason Tarry, chief executive for Tesco UK and Ireland.

“These new roles will help us continue to meet online demand for the long term, and will create permanent employment opportunities for 16,000 people across the UK,” he added in a statement.

The new permanent positions are in addition to around 4,000 full-time jobs created by Tesco during the pandemic.

Advertisements

Some 47,000 temporary staff joined Tesco at the peak of the coronavirus, most of whom have reached the end of their contracts.

Pre-pandemic, online sales at Tesco accounted for about nine percent of total revenue.

That has jumped to more than 16 percent, with Tesco expecting online sales this year to reach more than £5.5 billion ($7.1 billion, 6.0 billion euros).

Monday’s update comes after major UK companies announced thousands of job cuts in recent weeks, notably across the aviation, energy and retail sectors, owing to COVID-19 fallout.

Advertisements

Britain’s economy shrank by one fifth in the second quarter, more than any European neighbour, as the lockdown plunged the country into its deepest recession on record.

In October, the UK government is to end a furlough scheme that has been paying up to 80 percent of wages for around ten million workers during the pandemic.

Analysts said this would result in soaring unemployment across Britain.

– Travel sector warning –

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) warned Monday that more than 90,000 travel jobs have been lost or remain under threat owing to coronavirus fallout.

Advertisements

Far fewer Britons are heading abroad, particularly after the UK government re-imposed quarantine on travellers returning from nations including Austria, Croatia, France, the Netherlands and Spain.

“Travel desperately needs the government in its next review to provide tailored support or tens of thousands more jobs will be lost,” said ABTA chief executive Mark Tanzer.

The gloomy survey came after student specialist holiday firm STA Travel UK collapsed on Friday.

Among British retailers hit hard by virus fallout is Marks and Spencer, which last week said it was axing 7,000 jobs as wary customers steer clear of its stores, which mainly sell clothes and food.

Anti-racism and Far-fight protest full London.

Advertisements

Anti-racism protesters and far-right activists have rallied in London in rival demonstrations, despite strict police restrictions and warnings to stay home to contain the coronavirus.

Demonstrations have been taking place around the world and in parts of the United Kingdom over the death of African American George Floyd in Minneapolis last monht after a white policeman knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

In the UK, a debate is raging over monuments to those involved in its imperialist past, especially after the statue of slave trader Edward Colston was torn down and thrown into the harbour of Bristol port last weekend. In London, a statue of Winston Churchill was daubed with the words “was a racist”.

In and around Parliament Square on Saturday afternoon, hundreds of people wearing football shirts, chanting “England, England”, and describing themselves as patriots, gathered alongside military veterans to guard the Cenotaph war memorial.

“Winston Churchill, he’s one of our own,” they chanted, near his statue.

A few kilometres away, anti-racism protesters gathered at Hyde Park, holding Black Lives Matter placards, even though organisers had told them not to attend, fearing clashes.

Police separated two groups of about 100 people each in Trafalgar Square, one chanting “Black Lives Matter”, and the other racial slurs. Some groups jostled, tossed bottles and cans and set off fireworks, as riot police lined up.

‘Fluid situation’
Reporting from central London, NRM said the situation was still fluid for protesters and the police.

“Clashes erupted between the police and the right-wing protesters who have come out as advertised to protect the national monuments in Parliament Square, in the words of the leader of the group Britain First, one of the organisers,” he said.

“In Trafalgar Square in central London, a group of rival Black Lives Matter protesters are being protected by the police,” Hull added.

Hundreds of people also attended rallies in northern English cities like Liverpool and Newcastle, with many protesters donning masks due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Advertisements

Police said on Saturday that some people were bringing weapons to the London rallies. They imposed route restrictions on both groups and said rallies must end by 5pm (16:00 GMT) in a bid to avoid violent clashes.

“Anyone who thinks they can commit a crime or vandalise property will be arrested,” Commander Bas Javid said in a statement.

[London] Brexit talk resume despite COVID-19 pandemic.

British and EU officials were scheduled to restart Brexit trade talks Monday after a break because of the coronavirus, which is making an end-of-year deal look even more unlikely.

After a first round in early March negotiations were suspended for six weeks as officials focused on the deadly virus sweeping Europe.

The June deadline set by London to assess the chances of an agreement is now fast approaching.

The novel coronavirus has affected officials directly, hitting both EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier and his British counterpart David Frost — and then, dramatically, putting Prime Minister Boris Johnson in intensive care.

Despite the ticking clock and the extra pressure brought by the worst global pandemic in living memory, Johnson’s government rules out extending Britain’s transition period to negotiate a future relationship with the EU.

Britain left the EU on January 31 but remains tied to it until the end of December.

Fears are growing that no deal will be reached, meaning that WTO rules with high tariffs and customs barriers would come into force between the UK and EU.

That prospect so alarmed the head of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, that last week she urged Brussels and London to extend their deadline, saying it was in everyone’s interests to reduce uncertainty amid the economic turmoil wrought by the pandemic.

But Johnson has remained deaf to the appeal, despite Britain’s budget watchdog warning that the coronavirus lockdown could shrink the country’s economy by a massive 13 percent in 2020.

>>> Double Shock <<<

Because of virus restrictions, this week’s talks will take place by videolink.

Fabian Zuleeg of the European Policy Centre warned there could be “no meaningful negotiations” at this point — because of the technical limitations of video talks and because politicians’ focus is on fighting the pandemic.

In these circumstances, it will probably be necessary to extend the deadline to avoid Britain crashing out with no deal and facing a further economic shock on top of the coronavirus recession, Zuleeg said.

“But so far, Brexit has never been about the best economic option. It very much depends on what price Boris Johnson is willing to pay for what is portrayed in the UK as ‘sovereignty’ and ‘independence’,” Zuleeg said

A European source close to the talks said a “Johnson Brexit” — sacrificing close links to the EU in order to be free of its rules — was already going to rattle the economy.

“With corona, it’s going to be a double shock for businesses,” the source said

The virus adds another layer of difficulty to an already complex negotiation, where, at the end of the first round in March, the two sides could only note their disagreements rather than make concrete progress.

London is trying to negotiate a series of packages in different domains including fishing, goods, aviation, justice and energy. But EU leaders want a single overarching accord.

The thorny problem of fishing rights — deeply important to several key EU states, notably France — could derail the whole process, according to some in Brussels.

This week’s round of talks are to last until Friday. Barnier and Frost were scheduled to open the proceedings on Monday before their teams start technical sector-by-sector negotiations on Tuesday.

COVID-19: London residents may be restricted from leaving their homes.

Authorities are considering putting London on coronavirus lockdown with extra travel restrictions for Brits as the deadly disease has continued to spread rapidly in the capital.

Sources close to City Hall disclosed to The Sun that the Government is preparing fresh legislation to give them the power to stop gatherings and keep Londoners inside.

The insiders also claimed that the measures would stop Londoners from leaving their homes but will only permit them to go to the supermarket or pharmacy.

Downing Street said today that ministers could use existing laws to keep individuals “in isolation for their own safety” and the emergency powers could come as early as Friday, though sources stressed the plans were not imminent.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that the virus was spreading faster in London than other parts of the country

A spokesperson said: “We have set out the steps necessary at this point in time. But we will be guided by the scientific and medical advice to make sure we take the right steps at the right time.

“We will do whatever it is required to keep the public safe.”

London is the worst affected area in the UK with 621 cases and 25 deaths. In total, there are 2,626 cases in the country.

Boris Johnson mum moving House of Lords to york

Britain’s Conservative government led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson is contemplating moving the House of Lords could out of London to York.

News reports quoting Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly said the idea was an option being considered by ministers.

It has been suggested that the upper house of parliament could be transferred from Westminster to York.

‘What we are looking at is a whole range of options about making sure every part of the UK feels properly connected from politics.

‘When the PM stood up the day after the election and said this is going to be the people’s government he meant it. That meant connecting people with government and politics. ‘The referendum in 2016 wasn’t just about our relationship with the EU, it was about millions of people and their relationship with politics as a whole,’ NobleReporters cleared
