Diego Costa’s career at stake, may come to an end and soon

Advertisements

Atletico Madrid are preparing for the return of the Champions League after progressing past Liverpool in the first knockout round, yet the abridged version of the tournament could be key for Diego Costa with the veteran having both the tournament and his future at stake.

Los Colchoneros have come agonisingly close to lifting the famous trophy twice in recent seasons and after dispatching the holders at Anfield, they once again feel as though they have a good chance to reach the final.

However, Costa himself has endured an injury-hit 2019/20 season and hasn’t contributed as many goals as he would have liked.

This combined with his high salary has left him in an unenviable position in the Spanish capital, especially with his current contract due to expire in June of 2021.

His memories of the 2014 final are dark, with his injury forcing him out of the match after less than 10 minutes of play.

2020 offers the former Chelsea star a chance to return to the showpiece event, but his form will have to improve.

There are doubts about whether or not he will be offered a contract extension given his drop in form and the regularity with which he now picks up injuries.

Ever since he returned to Atleti in January of 2018, almost every transfer window has seen rumours emerge linking Costa with a transfer away.

Chinese clubs have queued up to sign him, whilst Brazilian football has always tempted him, although it isn’t so much that Los Colchoneros have buyer’s remorse as Diego Simeone continues to trust the forward.

At the age of 32 a good performance in the Champions League could help influence Andrea Berta’s decision on his contract, but a continuation of his poor domestic form could hasten his exit from the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

Diego Costa bag 6 months prison term.

Advertisements

Atletico Madrid striker, Diego Costa has been sentenced to six months in prison for fraud; but due to Spanish law, he will pay a hefty fine to avoid serving the time.

According to court filing published last month, the 31-year-old did not declare payments of just over €5m (£4.4m) from his 2014 transfer from Atletico to Chelsea in his tax return, as well as more than €1m (£900,000) in image rights. He has now been handed a total fine of €543,000 (£482,000).

Due to the fact that Spanish law allows penal sentences below two years for non-violent crimes to be exchanged for a financial penalty, Diego Costa agreed to pay an additional fine of €36,500 (£32,000) on top of the €507,000 (£450,000) to avoid prison time.

Best Player? Douglas Costa Prefers Dybala to Ronaldo.

Douglas Costa has overlooked Cristiano Ronaldo in naming Juventus’s best player, by insisting instead that Paulo Dybala is the key man at the club.

Ronaldo has been integral to Juve’s Serie A charge this term as they were standing top of the table one point ahead of Lazio before the coronaviurs pandemic halted sport across the world.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star is the club’s top scorer this season with 21 goals in Serie A, three times as many as Dybala.

Yet Costa claims Ronaldo is only second best behind Dybala, although he does have a close friendship with the Argentina international.

When asked over the best player at the club in an Instagram Q&A, he said: ‘The strongest companion is Paulino, Dybala. Then of course also Ronaldo’.

Supporters reacted with surprise by the Brazilian’s claim, with one fan sarcastically saying: ‘Yes Douglas Costa, Dybala is better than Ronaldo’ before adding emojis to emphasise the point.

Another even refused to entertain the idea of Ronaldo being compared to either player, saying: Imagine comparing Ronaldo to Dybala and Douglas b***** Costa. Juve fans hands down worst fans in Italy.’

The first two Juventus players to test positive for Covid-19, Daniele Rugani and Blaise Matuidi, have now returned negative tests for the novel coronavirus after recovering over the past month.

The Bianconeri’s statement read: “The players have, therefore, recovered and are no longer subjected to the home isolation regime.”

The duo have not missed any action as Serie A has been suspended amid the pandemic.
