Speaking on Friday during a press conference at the Government House in Uyo, the ex-minister said he disappointed himself and everyone, noting that his reaction was undefendable.

Another Igbo businessman, popularly known as ‘Champion’, and his brother were kidnapped at Garden Street last Wednesday night.

Champion’s brother was kidnapped when he went with a ransom sum to free his brother. The hoodlums had collected the ransom, released Champion and then detained the brother asking for more money.

It was learnt that an unidentified Calabar socialite was kidnapped on Saturday, February 22 at Efio-Ete axis in Calabar municipality about 9:00 pm.

A witness, Eno Emmanuel, said the abductors had traced the victim to a bar at Efio-Ete where they hid around, striking soon as the victim entered his car.

Eno, who sells oranges around the junction, said: “We just heard a gunshot and we thought they were robbers because most times they just shoot and carry something and zoom off. But this one was different. They just carried one man and took off.”

With regards to Champion, family sources revealed that he and his brother had been released after paying N3.5 million in ransom, while Chief Desmond was released Saturday night after paying about N2 million to his abductors.

The abductors of the accounting staff at Chronicle Newspaper, Maurice Archibong, have reportedly contacted the family and demanded N1.5 million as ransom for his release.

As for the lecturer, his abductors are demanding for N15 million.

Narrating his ordeal, one of the victims said: “It is a terrible experience and these boys are operating freely. Calabar has become very unsafe for business and leisure. How can they carry human beings in a car and beat all the security checkpoints and carry somebody to the creeks?

“These boys kidnap every day and some victims die in the process. Please, we plead with the government to do something about this state of insecurity in Calabar.”

Meanwhile, some top Igbo businessmen are said to have sent a delegation to the Akwa Ibom government to allocate some parcel of land where they can build shops, as Cross River is said to have become too insecure for business.

Sources close to the Igbo community leadership in the state disclosed that they have had a series of meetings in recent days, advising Igbo businessmen to relocate their businesses to more secure states.

The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the latest kidnapping incident.

She said, “I am aware that somebody has been kidnapped but I have not been briefed by the anti-kidnapping squad if at all the matter has been reported to the squad.”

But a top security officer, who pleaded anonymity, blamed the increase in kidnapping and robbery on a lack of funds and operational vehicles.

The officer said: “We have heightened security challenges in the state. This is because the governor is not funding security agencies as other governors do. So we cannot fight crime alone. We need support from the state for enforcement.”

Breaking: Calabar corper impregnated by JSS 2 student, LIE

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Cross River State has debunked report of a JSS 2 student impregnating a female corps member serving in the state.

In a statement released by NYSC’s Head Press & Public Relations Unit in the state, Abdullahi Yuguda, it was alleged that the report was shared on social media to malign the reputation and integrity of the scheme and the public perception of corps members.

It reads;

“The attention of the National Youth Service Corps, Cross River State has been drawn to a malicious publication making the rounds in the social media, alleging that a Female Corps Member was impregnated by a teenage boy (student) in the state.”

“To put the records straight, there is nothing as such in Cross River as claimed by the unknown writer. It is only meant to malign the reputation and integrity of the scheme and the public perception of our corps members. The national youth Service Corps is a reputable organisation that is very proud of her Corps Members because of their high level of discipline and responsibility and therefore cannot be involved in such a shameful act.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the authorities of NYSC at Local, Zonal and State levels never received any report of such formally or informally.

“The said news is the handiwork of fake news hawkers who derive joy in seeking attention or traffic to their websites, at the expense of protecting journalistic code of ethics.

“Embarrassingly the originators of the news failed to state the source of the news rather was dwelling on imaginary school, JSS student and Corps Member.

“Worthy of note is the fact that NYSC has a laid down procedure for approaching matters on Corps Discipline and Reward. But as at the time of fielding this rejoinder, no Corps Member in Cross River State is connected with such negative Act.

“Management of the Scheme in Cross River State advises the authors and originators of such callow write up to retract same and henceforth, desist from manufacturing fake news with the intention of deflating the reputation of the NYSC scheme but rather pay attention to the numerous selfless services rendered to Cross River communities by Members of the National Youth Service Corps.”

Calabar: Cleric predicts how Amaechi will experience hard times.

…says Atiku will reconcile with enemies

The General Overseer and President of Christian Central Chapel International (CCCI), Bishop Gospel Emmah Isong, has predicted strange re-alignments and reconciliations among politicians in 2020.

Besides, while he predicted that the former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, would reach out to his political foes in order to reposition himself; he foresees turbulent times for the Rivers State-born Minister of transport, Mr Rotimi Amaechi.

Speaking at 2020 annual “Pass Over Night” church service held in Calabar to usher in the New Year, Isong, who doubles as the National Publicity Secretary of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), also predicted more arrests of Nigerians by DSS which may lead to a shake-up.

He said: “There shall be strange re-alignments, compensations and reconciliations and collaborations of old-time political enemies in 2020.

“Alhaji Abubakar Atiku is going to reconcile with his enemies to position himself in politics. Get ready for shock reconciliations.

“Those of you that used to die for politicians, you will notice that the person you were dying for has made peace with his enemies. Then you will know that politics is a game. And that at a high level, they don’t take it the way you do.

“Rotimi Amechi will have an uphill task, but in the end, he would triumph over his adversaries who are trying to pull him down. But he shall convince his friends and foes that he is still in charge,” he prophesied.

On Department of State Security Services (DSS), he said: “There shall be a shake-up in the DSS because of the embarrassment of the continuous arrest of innocent Nigerians. The arrest would not only be limited to ordinary citizens, but shall also include clergymen who make public utterance that would be against the DSS.

On the issue of insecurity, the cleric said: “There shall be several and retaliatory attacks on the headsmen that would lead to killing all over Nigeria and movement of cows on the road would be heavily restricted to protect life

“Because of border closure, criminals and smugglers would devise other means of breaking the law on the waterways. Besides, I foresee more protests and civil disobedience; I foresee teargas everywhere, mind your steps this year,” he predicted.

On the economy, he stated that “there shall be favourable and overwhelming government policies on Nigeria’s seaport, aviation and marine businesses.”

On Cross River, he prophesied that the state shall witness a serious transformation from 2020 to the extent that those who see the state as a failure would become so shocked.

He, however, called on Nigerians to stop being hard and selfish, and rather embrace real change by caring for the weak, the young and the elderly.

The Governor of Cross River State, Prof Ben Ayade, has lauded MTN Group, Africa’s leading cellular telecommunications company in Nigeria, for its choice of Calabar as one of the pilot cities to test-run its latest technological innovation – the 5G technology.

The Governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Orientation, Dr. Aye Henshaw, made gave the commendation during the Company’s 5G technology trial, held on 28 November 2019, at MTN Office, Etta Agbor Road, Calabar.

“The arrival of 5G technology in Calabar is not a coincidence. We are pretty gratified that MTN chose Calabar as one of the pilot cities for this project,” he stated.

“I know that we have a history of partnership with MTN. When we started to build the Optic Fibre Network, it was in partnership with MTN. Going forward, the current administration has invested a lot of funds in equipment that will lead to the realization of that project. And very soon, we will call MTN again on issues of connectivity, because the Ayade-led administration, as a test-run, wants to get the entire Carnival Calabar route to be smart,” Governor Ayade added.

The Governor, who described the 5G innovation as a welcomed development, commended the company for displaying the abundance of benefits the 5G technology brings.

The Governor promised to key in and build on the existing partnership, while wishing MTN a faster rollout that would lead to the adoption and approval of the technology for the consumption of Cross Riverians and other residents of the State.

In his remarks, the Chief Technical Officer, MTN Nigeria, Mr. Mohammed Rufai, after conducting the Governor and other dignitaries round the 5G Demonstration Booths, said the exercise was just a demonstration of the technology which is subject to the ratification, adoption and approval of the National Communications Commission (NCC).

He said:”How we go about our investments, doing things and coming first with a lot of innovations is a further demonstration that MTN has come to stay”.

5G is the fifth generation of cellular network technology. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has defined three main uses for 5G. They are Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), and Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC)
