The Catalan club maintain that the former French national team manager is not part of their future plans as they focus on the Champions League tie against Napoli.

FC Barcelona have distanced themselves from Laurent Blanc as a potential substitute for Quique Setién on the Camp Nou bench.

Sources close to the club maintain that the former French international team manager isn’t even at the top of a potential list as the club now turn their full attention to the Champions League Round of 16 tie against Serie A side Napoli in August.

Blanc is respected by the Catalan club with the coach having not been in charge of any team since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2016 and they deny that contact between Blanc and sporting director Éric Abidal recently materialised.

Xavi Hernandez is still the main target for the Catalan outfit but with the former midfielder committing himself to QSL side Al-Saad for another season, the club may have to wait through to June 20 (2021) to get their number one target.

Barca’s outreach for reliable coach: Blanc to replace Setien

Former France coach Laurent Blanc is one of the options being looked at by Barcelona to replace Quique Setien in the summer.

The Spaniard’s role is under threat after missing out on LaLiga Santander and the Catalans are considering alternatives, particularly if the club fails to land the Champions League.

According to L’Equipe, Blanc is a target, with sporting director Eric Abidal supporting the move.

The newspaper also maintains that Blanc is very much interested in the role after being out of the game since 2016 when he left his role as coach of Paris Saint-Germain.

Abidal knows Blanc well as he worked under him between 2010 and 2012 with the French national team, and is familiar with his possession-based style of play which would suit Barcelona well.

Since leaving PSG, Blanc has knocked back several offers, including from Sevilla and Galatasaray in 2017, but at the age of 54 is keen to get back in to the game.

Blanc would be prepared to sign a one-year deal and would want to bring in his assistant Frank Passi alongside him.

He isn’t the only candidate however, with the French paper also reporting that Ronald Koeman is in the running and is the preferred target of club president Josep Maria Bartomeu.
