Signing Coutinho is pointless – Berbatov

Manchester United “don’t need” Philippe Coutinho and are unlikely to join the clamour for Barcelona’s former Liverpool star as they look instead to Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes for inspiration, says Dimitar Berbatov.

The Red Devils have been heavily linked with the Brazil international playmaker in the past.

Having seen Coutinho catch the eye in the Premier League at Anfield, proven pedigree in English football has been a quality much coveted by those at Old Trafford.

United have, however, turned their attention elsewhere when landing Portugal international Fernandes, while faith continues to be shown in the mercurial talents of World Cup winner Pogba.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expected to make that midfield pairing integral to his future plans, Berbatov sees no reason for the Red Devils to be drawn into a transfer battle for Coutinho – who has flopped since leaving Merseyside for Catalunya.

The former United striker told Betfair: “There have been a lot of Premier League clubs linked with him, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle and even Manchester United, but sometimes the obvious choice isn’t always the correct one.

“Everyone thought he would do great when he moved to Barcelona but it didn’t work out, sometimes you need to step back to go forwards, he will go to a good team there is no question about that, but he needs the trust of a manager to believe in him and make him the main man so that he can play calm and be free to do what he does.

“Other people will see him linked with a move to United and they will point out his connections with Liverpool and how he would never be forgiven if he switched to Old Trafford, but honestly, United don’t need him right now.

“Bruno Fernandes is a very similar player; he really hit the ground running and looks to be a very promising signing so I don’t think there would be any point in United signing him.

“Pogba is coming back, Fernandes is there, [Scott] McTominay is producing great football as well, they have enough quality there so signing Coutinho would be pointless.”

Coutinho is said to favour a return to the Premier League if he is to depart Barcelona in the next transfer window, with a season-long loan at Bayern Munich in 2019-20 having not gone entirely to plan as he once again struggled to rediscover his spark.

Newcastle is no Match, Bale Should stay at Madrid – berbatov

Gareth Bale is being tipped to remain in his current surroundings despite the transfer talk that continues to swirl around him, with Dimitar Berbatov admitting “you cannot compare Newcastle with Real Madrid”.

The Wales international has seen a move away from Santiago Bernabeu mooted for some time and a return to the Premier League for the former Tottenham forward is considered to be his best option, although a completely new challenge could be sought in MLS or China.

Berbatov admits that his ex-Spurs team-mate needs to find more regular game time from somewhere, but is not convinced that the 30-year-old will walk away from Madrid for the sake of it.

He is also less than convinced that Newcastle, who are the subject of a potential £300 million ($366m) takeover, can be the ones to lure Bale back to English football.

Berbatov told Betfair of a man he once played alongside in north London: “Every time Gareth Bale is mentioned it is a case of will he leave Real Madrid, will he stay, is he playing, is he scoring, is he playing golf, why is he playing golf?

“It’s tiring and in my opinion, he has his agent, his family, his surroundings and if they think that Madrid is the right place for him then he will stay, it doesn’t matter what anyone else says.

“Many people think he needs to leave Madrid and some of the supporters want him to leave, but I think he likes it there and if that is the case that is all that will matter to him.

“Personally, I want to see him play more, score more and produce the performances like he has done in the past. If you are not appreciated where you are, then you go somewhere else.

“At Real Madrid his goals to games ratio has been really impressive and some of the goals he has scored during his time there have been amazing, the type of goals that average players cannot score.

“Look at that goal he scored in the Champions League final against Liverpool – it speaks volumes for the quality he has. You can know a lot about a player by the type of goals they score and the goals that Bale has scored really tell me that he has a lot of quality.

“There have been a lot of reports about Newcastle possibly signing Bale, he has been at Real Madrid for some time now, he has won so many trophies and he is appreciated around the world for the football he plays. But with all due respect, you cannot compare Newcastle with Real Madrid.

“If Newcastle want to get him, they need to show him that they are building something. The coach needs somebody with whom he can connect and that might mean they have to get a new coach.

“If Newcastle appoint Mauricio Pochettino, then OK, great start, but then they need to tell him what other players they are going to sign. If he sees all that and he likes what he sees, maybe he will consider it, but for me, I think he will stay at Real Madrid.”

‘He’s in same situation as I was’ – Berbatov urges Kane to join Man Utd

Advertisements

Harry Kane’s “head is not in the right place” at Tottenham, according to Dimitar Berbatov, who has urged the striker to take up the chance to join Manchester United this summer.

Berbatov says he was in exactly the same situation as Kane when he decided to swap Spurs for the Red Devils in 2008, and has advised the talented forward to make the same jump if his head has been turned.

“The final step for me was joining Manchester United and I knew I would be making people disappointed – especially Tottenham fans – but I was following my own path,” The ex-Tottenham and United frontman told the BBC’s Football Daily podcast.

“I knew if I missed that chance another one might not come. This is how it is in football. Sometimes you need to make tough decisions.

“The same situation is happening with Harry Kane at the moment, the exact same. He’s in the same situation as I was in as he has started asking questions and maybe his head is not in the right place.

“My head was not in the right place. It was the same with [Christian] Eriksen. He wasn’t really there in the last couple of games. I watched the games and I saw that his head was not there.

“Kane is in the same situation. If there is any truth in the rumours, it’s in his head, 100 per cent. The lack of trophies is the main problem for players like Kane.

“He’s not getting any younger. He wants to look back and know he won trophies. When I see Spurs play United now, even if on paper Spurs have better players, they still go there with fear.”

I am curious on how Pogba will link up with Bruno Fernandes – Berbatov.

Manchester United striker, Dimitar Berbatov, has expressed doubts over Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes playing together in the same midfield.

According to him, both players are too similar in style.

Fernandes arrived at Old Trafford in January and has made instant impact, scoring three times already and providing assists in both the Premier League and Europa League.

Pogba on the other hand, has endured an injury-ravaged season and has not started a game since September.

He was linked with a move away from United, but it is now believed he is likely to remain with the Red Devils.

This might leave manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with the task of fitting both he and Fernandes in his team and Berbatov reckons it won’t be easy.

“I don’t know if Fernandes and Pogba can play together,” Berbatov wrote in his Betfair column.

“As a fan of Paul Pogba, I want him to stay at United, I think it would be best for him, but I am curious to see how he will link up with Fernandes.

“Sometimes footballers are too similar to play together.

But I hope that’s not the case here because, with Fernandes and Pogba in the same midfield, United could be a very imaginative team that would surprise opponents next season or even sooner.”
