Leading the protest, Comrade Mayegun Oloruntobi expressed the association’s grievances against Ogun revenue agencies, which he described as inhumane.

The Flicthers Association in Ondo State, on Monday, protested the alleged illegal extortion, molestation and coercion by the Ogun State Revenue agencies.

The protesters, who blocked the ever-busy Lagos/Benin Road at Ajebamide area, a border community in Odigbo Local Council Area of Ondo State, hindered the free flow of traffic movement for about 40 minutes.

Noble Reporters Media reports that the protesters carried different placards with inscriptions: “Stop Unlawful Collection of N50,000 only from Our Members at Atoyo Junction”, ” Abiodun, Call Your People to Order”, “Stop Illegal Ticketing on the Highway” and “Unlawful Ticketing by Ogun State Govt. at Atoyo Junction”.

Leading the protest, Comrade Mayegun Oloruntobi expressed the association’s grievances against Ogun revenue agencies, which he described as inhumane.

“The government of Ondo State has created jobs by giving the association permission to work in forests in the state.

“But it was disheartening that the Ogun Govt. would stiffen the association’s means of livelihood through numerous and unnecessary ticketing while transporting their logs to Ogun State.

” We are Flitchers’ Association in Ondo State and we pay to the government in Ondo State. Our government has created a job through timber work so that we will not be jobless.

Advertisements

” The government has done this for us through our natural resources but anytime we cross our trucks with goods to Ogun State, the state will bring illegal ticket worth 50,000 while we only pay N7,000 to Ondo State Government.

“And if we can’t pay, they will impound our vehicles and take them to Abeokuta and ask us to pay N2 million, ” he stated.

He appealed to Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State to intervene in the matter within seven days so that it would not degenerate into the crisis.

Also, Mr Sunday Aro, the state’s Secretary of the association, explained that all attempts to settle the matter with the Ogun State Government had proved abortive.

Advertisements

” All our efforts were to no avail. Last week, we met the Ogun State revenue agencies but nothing was done,” he said.

Aro enjoined all stakeholders and authorities to wade into the matter, adding that the association has provided jobs to no fewer than 10,000 workers in Ondo State.

” We want authorities to intervene within seven days. We have some evidence on our members that have been molested and harassed including some of our women raped.

” This is not done anywhere. At Control Post in Ondo State, you pay only N7,000.

“We have written petition to Ogun State Commissioner of Police, the state Commissioner for Natural Resources, the state Attorney General because we don’t want to take the law into our hands,” he stated.

Advertisements

Reacting to the development, Chief Alex Ajipe, the Consultant to the Ondo State Ministry of Natural Resources on Revenue, said that the government had confirmed the alleged extortion especially at Atoyo on the highway.

Ajipe noted that different kinds of money were being collected without any basis, describing the action as barbaric on the Federal Government road.

According to him, people should be allowed to ply the road without disturbance, having done the right thing.

He explained that though the Ogun State Government claimed ignorance of the extortion, different receipts issued bore the state’s logo and name.

Ajipe appealed to the association not to take the law into its hands but allow for more dialogue.

He also urged Ogun State Government to ensure that sanctity was maintained.

Fire destroy part of ‘Oba’ market in Benin

Advertisements

A fire outbreak early Monday morning at a section of the popular Oba Market, Benin, has consumed hundreds of shops and goods worth millions of naira.

The incident happened barely few days after the Edo Government had ordered traders to return to the market from various primary schools that served as makeshift markets in the last six weeks.

NRM reports that the traders were relocated to the makeshift markets as part measures to contain the spread of coronavirus in the state.

There has been no clue yet to the cause of the fire which affected mostly lock-up shops stocked with textile materials and comestics.

The fire was however put off by fire fighters from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, Edo Fire Service and the Nigerian Army School of Supply and Transportation, Benin.

The Assistant Controller General, Federal Fire Service, Benin, Karebo Samson, said he received a distress call from the Chief Security Officer, Government House, Benin, and quickly mobilised his men to the scene.

“I had to call the men at the station and they got here very early. They needed assistance because they exhausted the water they had.

“Immediately, I called the CSO that we needed assistance from sister fire fighting agencies and told me he would call the UNIBEN fire service.

Advertisements

“The army fire service, the NNPC fire service and the Edo state fire service have also been on ground. We have been here since past 12 a.m. battling the fire.

“I cannot tell you the cause of the fire; we will send in our investigators possibly today or tomorrow so they can ascertain what actually caused the fire,” he said.

Recounting their losses, one of the traders who sells textile material, Mary Osadolor, said she could not save any of her wares as her shop was completely burnt.

“They called me around 1 a.m. today that Oba market was on fire. Reaching here, we could not find any of our goods,” she said.

She however, appealed to the state government and well-meaning Nigerians to provide assistance to her and other victims.

Mrs Janet Akpan, a dealer on cosmetics, said she had lost all her goods worth millions of naira.

According to her, immediately the market was opened last week, she went to the market to stockpile her shop.

“Sadly, I have lost the only thing that I use to feed my family. The fire consumed all my wares. I do not have anything in my store; everything was burnt,” she lamented.

Lockdown extension: People will die of hunger if care isn’t taken – Obaseki’s wife. [Nigeria]

The wife of the Edo State Governor, Betsy Obaseki, has warned that diverting relief materials meant for the vulnerable in the society will further compound the current difficulties being experienced over the coronavirus pandemic.

According to her, hunger could be an even bigger threat to life than the virus.

Mrs Obaseki said this while handing over some relief materials from the state government to representatives of various groups in Benin City, the state capital.

She urged them to resist any temptation to be greedy and hoard the items for personal use or even give them out to those who can afford it.

“These relief materials are meant only for the vulnerable in the society, it is not meant for those who can afford full lockdown in their homes. If we are careful coronavirus will not kill too many people in this country, but if we are not careful it is hunger that will kill people. That is why the government is taking these steps to do what they have to do,” she said.

The items distributed include bags of rice, bags of beans, garri, noodles, oil, puree, millet, seasoning, soaps and detergent.

According to the State Commissioner for Social Development and Gender, Maria Edekor, the beneficiaries of the relief packages are the elderly, returnees, people living with disabilities, prison inmates, children in correctional centres, rehabilitation centres and orphanage homes.

Meanwhile, the governor’s wife urged residents who are well-to-do, to emulate the gesture of the government and also lend a helping hand to the vulnerable around them

[Nigeria] Benin City suffer grievous explosion.

There was confusion at Dumez Street, off Benin-Auchi Road, Eyean, following an early morning explosion that rocked the area.

It was gathered that the explosion occurred at No 4, Dumez Street while its devastating impacts were visible on about six houses in the area.

When our correspondent visited the scene, the operatives of the Nigeria Police were already on ground to ascertain the cause of the explosion.

One of the landlords, Pastor David Iginua, whose house was affected by the explosion, said he heard a very loud blast that early morning of Friday and he decided to go out to find out what it was all about.

He said to his bewilderment, he saw the glasses of the windows of his building all shattered on the floor.

“I am Pastor David Iginua and my house is on 42, Arete Street, off Benin-Auchi road, Eyaen, which is just behind where the explosion took place.

“As I sat there, all of a sudden, I heard a terrific sound. I looked, ran inside, I didn’t see what happened.

“But later I had to come outside to see what happened.

“So I started looking for where the sound came from but just to discover that a heavy smoke was coming out from one man’s compound.

“From the rumours we are hearing, the man used to manufacture bombs.

“And it is like he tested it inside his well. Assuming he brought it out, it would have finished the community.

“The way this house shook, everybody came out to say how their houses shook,” he said.

Another landlord who lives on No 3, Dumez Street, just a building from where the explosion took place, said the explosion shook the very foundation of his storey building while broken glasses from the windows were visible everywhere.

Another resident of the area who did not want his name in print said the community before now, had been very peaceful, adding that the man who live in the premises where the explosion took place had been handed over to the police.

“I am one of the persons living in this area. It was around 9am yesterday Good Friday; we heard a very loud explosion – bomb.

“So we decided to rush to the scene and getting there, we saw smoke coming out from the well.

“So, in that compound, there is a well. So, we then asked the boy we met there what the problem was. He said he didn’t know.

“Upon all the investigation carried out by the people of the community, we were only able to see that six houses were affected including his.

“So when we moved round, we saw that the glasses of the windows were shattered.

“We have informed the Aduwawa police station and they came, inspected the place and took away what they wanted and arrested the boy and as we speak, the boy is still with the police at the police station.

“This very morning, the anti-bomb squad also came including Wabaizighan. The area is calm as far as we are concerned.

“No life was lost in the process and we have not experienced such a thing in this area before. This place is very peaceful”, he said.

When contacted, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Lawan Jimeta, said investigation into the incident was on.

‎Recall that at the height of the political tension in the state the residence of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Francis Inegbeneki in Benin City, was attacked with substances believed to be explosives; the chambers of former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Hon. Henry Idahagbon was attacked by suspected gunmen, just as the residence of the state secretary of the party, Lawrence Okah, was also attacked with explosives.

Banger: Wike blast Oshiomhole, question him

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has called on the Federal Government to warn the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, to stop making inflammatory remarks capable of destabilising the country.

In a statement on Thursday by his spokesman, Simeon Nwakaudu, slammed the APC national chairman for saying there would be no swearing-in of any governor in Bayelsa State.

Governor Wike, who was reacting to the judgement of the Supreme Court which sacked the APC governorship candidate, David Lyon, as the governor-elect of Bayelsa State, insisted that Oshiomhole has no such powers to make the remarks.

He said, “The Federal Government should warn Oshiomhole to stop making remarks that will destabilise Nigeria.

“What he is doing in Edo State is not proper and he should not bring it to the rest of the Niger Delta.”

“Who is Oshiomhole to determine who has spread in a state? Supreme Court has made a ruling. It is unfortunate for Oshiomhole to come forward to say that nobody will be sworn in,” the governor added.

He alleged that the APC national chairman was making unguarded statements because he had lost the support of governors of the ruling party.

Governor Wike purported, “It is most unfortunate what Oshiomhole is doing because he wants to retain his position as national chairman. APC governors have rejected him, that is why he is struggling to prove that he is fighting for the party.

“He is making statements as if he owns the country. This is the same way he is carrying on in Edo State, fighting the governor. He believes that he has the forces to cause crisis. He is arrogating powers to himself, which is not good.”

The governor also accused Oshiomhole of preaching one thing but goes ahead to practice a different thing.

According to him, the situation in Edo State has exposed the APC national chairman as “a godfather who once preached against godfathers”.

Governor Wike insisted that Oshiomhole would not be allowed to “destroy the Niger Delta,” adding that the rule of law must continue to prevail at all times.

Obaseki must do second term – APC chieftain allege

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State, Hon. Charles‎ Idahosa has described the crisis rocking the party in the state as ‘a storm in a teacup’, boasting that governor Godwin Obaseki must do two terms of eight years.

“Obaseki must do his eight years. Nobody can stop him. If anybody by omission or commission ‎does that, APC is dead in Edo State,” he warned.

Idahosa, a former political adviser to the ex-comrade governor, Adams Oshiomhole, spoke when a forum of APC chairmen in the 18 local government ‎areas of the state paid him a solidarity visit in his house in Benin City.

He argued that nobody challenged ex-governors Lucky Igbinedion and Adams Oshiomhole when they sought to contest for second terms of office and wondered why Obaseki should not do a second term of office.

Idahosa who said he stands as a rock of Gibraltar behind Obaseki in his quest for a second term ticket said Obaseki is very focused and straight forward and nobody can change him.

He said the reason why the crisis in the party had lingered without settlement was because Oshiomhole is envious of Obaseki’s achievements, alleging that the APC national chairman is the one “running from the settlement because he has boasted he will do this, he will do that.

‎”For those whose benevolent spirit cracked their palm kernel for them, they should not think they are God,” Idahosa said in a veiled reference to Oshiomhole and cautioned against making the APC crisis a tribal matter, adding that Edo State is one.

Idahosa further boasted that Governor Obaseki will defeat all the other governorship aspirants again as governor, recalling that he did so before when he was not a governor.

Earlier, the chairman of the chairmen forum and chairman of the APC in Orhionmwon local government area, Ben Oghumu, said the purpose of their forum was to bring sanity and unity into APC and called for support from Idahosa, even as he pledged for support for Obaseki’s bid for a second term.

Oshiomhole is the one with killer squad – Philip Shuaibu backs Obaseki

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shuaibu, has dismissed a claim by the 14-Edo lawmaker that his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, has killer-squad detailed to kill the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

The 14-Edo lawmaker had, while accusing Governor Obaseki of hatching plan to kill Oshiomhole and other APC leaders in the state, said: “We want to believe that because the leaders of our party, across the country, have been quiet to call Governor Obaseki to order, he has been further emboldened to kill everybody due to his desperate ambition for a second term.

“He has recruited a killer squad in Edo State and their mandate is to kill Oshiomhole and other APC leaders. So, he has continued to create crisis and disrupt public peace,” they noted.

However, reacting to the claim while speaking to newsmen in Abuja, Shuaibu alleged that it is the APC boss that should rather be accused of training a killer squad, due to his claim that he has infantry.

Asked what he knew about his governor training killer squad to kill Oshiomhole, he replied: “I don’t know anything about the governor’s killer squad. The governor does not have any squad rather, it is Oshiomhole who boasted in both social and conventional media that he has an infantry.

“So, if we are looking for the person who has killer squad, it should be the person who has infantry,” he said.

On the possibility of peace reigning in the party, the deputy governor maintained that the condition for peace to reign politically between him and Oshiomhole, is an apology and an endorsement of the governor for the second term.

“The only condition for two us to be on the same page politically is for him (Oshiomhole) to come back to Edo State as a father and say what has happened is in the past.

“And that he believes now that Governor Obaseki has taken the governance to the next level and for all of us to come back together and vote him for second term.

“When he (Oshiomhole) does that I will now be on the same page with him politically,” he said.

Obaseki/Oshiomhole: APC chieftain seek truce

Agbomhere, who is also the former governorship aspirant of APC in Edo, gave the advice in an interview known by NobleReporters in Abuja on Sunday.

He said the crisis did not only discourage potential investors from going to Edo but also de-marketed the state from other states and the world.

“One of the reasons, I am not happy with this present Government of Edo is that I feel that this crisis is de-marketing Edo to the rest of the states and the world.

“Now, they have been burning cars in Edo. They have been shooting and harassing people in Edo. Have you ever heard this government prosecutes anybody for that?

“It means they are not aware or it means they are not working. So, in the last rally, at least we heard that cars were burned,’’ Agbomhere said.

The party’s chieftain urged Edo Government not to tolerate any attack that would affect Edo people.

Godwin Obaseki & Adams Oshiomhole

“If I am a governor of Edo State, I will never support any attack whether in my interest or against my interest because the outcome will affect Edo people and I will not tolerate it.

“For me, I think that this present government has a challenge in its hand and also has the solution in its hand. I believe that the government knows how to solve it,’’ he said.

Benin: Chieftain’s house bombed

…after defectors from PDP joined APC

The crisis rocking the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), took a dangerous dimension yesterday, when the private residence of a chieftain of the party, Chief Francis Inegbeneki, was bombed in Benin City.

It was learnt that the attackers struck at about 3 am with two hand grenades which resulted in serious damage to his building and a motor vehicle parked in the compound located‎ in the Government Reservation Area of Benin, off Ihama.

No one was hurt in the attack, as the news was broken to APC faithful at a rally hosted by Chief Inegbeneki at Opoji, to receive PDP defectors from ‎the five local government areas of Esan Central Senatorial district of the state.

Reacting to the attack, Chief Inegbeneki, who was not at home at the time of the incident, said: “I got that information with a rude shock.

“Frankly, I am short of words, it must have been politically motivated. After this successful political rally, I am going to Benin to assess the damage.

Wondering why politics should be taken “this far”, Inegbeneki recalled that only recently the state governor, Godwin Obaseki has been‎ threatening to deal with those opposed to him.

‎He warned that “For those drumming music of war they should be prepared to dance to the music”.

Chief Inegbeneki told journalists he suspected the governor and his deputy over the attack on his house and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to rescue the people from the hands of Obaseki and his deputy, adding “Edo is under siege”.

‎He said that politics is about lobbying and urged Obaseki to lobby APC members instead of using force.

Kidjo hangs out with Burna boy days after Grammy event ..

Angelique Kidjo, a Beninese singer, has met with Burna Boy, Nigeria’s Afrofusion singer, and Bose Ogulu, his mum, days after winning the Grammys.

The 59-year-old actress and activist, who is known for her diverse musical influences, appeared to have paid a visit to the home of the ‘African Giant’ singer.

The duo took to their social media platforms on Friday to share pictures they took brimming with smiles.

In one of the videos on social media platforms, the talented songster can be seen discussing with Burna Boy and his mum, while the duo listened attentively.

Kidjo had snagged the Recording Academy’s 2020 ‘Best World Music Album’ award in the same award category in which Burna Boy was nominated for his ‘African Giant’ project.

While receiving her gramophone statuette on Sunday, Kidjo had dedicated her win to Burna Boy, describing him as being among those changing the narrative of music-making in the continent.

“He’s among those artistes from Africa that are changing the way that our continent is perceived and the way that Africa’s has been the bedrock of every music,” the four-time Grammy winner had said.

Burna had, following the loss, reassured his fans around the globe of his commitment to music-making, charging the world to get ready for his comeback.

Reacting to the ‘Ye’ crooner’s loss, Nigerians had flared while Naomi Campbell, an English actress, had criticized the Grammy organisers for failing to recognize Afrobeats as an award category.

“Afrobeats is a musical genre played on mainstream and primetime radio not only across the continent of Africa but across the world,” Campbell wrote in an open letter to the Academy.

“Recently, the genre was put in your ‘World Music’ category at the 2020 Grammys. This misrepresentation diminishes an entire genre in which such a high standard of talent has emerged.

“Did the world get to vote for this award? What will this neglectful categorization of music mean to individual cultures who contribute their blood, sweat, tears, and every level of their creativity?”

If Oshiomhole dies, we will hold Obaseki responsible – Lawmaker-elect ..

The 14 estranged Edo State lawmakers-elect have told Nigerians to hold Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, responsible if the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, is killed.

Briefing newsmen in Abuja, yesterday, spokesperson of the group, who represents Esan Central, Victor Edoror, pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari, party’s National Leader, Bola Tinubu, and the Progressives Governors’ Forum not to fold their hands and allow Governor Obaseki killer-squad kill the APC chairman.

The group further accused the Edo governor of fuelling the crisis in the state and frustrating all the peace efforts

“There have been series of attacks on members of APC across the state on different occasions just because they bear opposing views from that of Governor Obaseki and the government of the day in Edo. Homes of most leaders of the APC in Edo State have been marked for demolition by Governor Obaseki.

“Several petitions written to the IGP from June 18, 2019 after the attack on us in Benin, yet nobody has been held responsible for it.

“We want to believe that because leaders of our party across the country have failed to call Governor Obaseki to order, he has been further emboldened to kill everybody due to his desperate ambition for a second term.

“He has recruited a killer squad in Edo State and their mandate is to kill Oshiomhole and other APC leaders. So, he has continued to create crisis and disrupt the public peace.

“IGP should wake up to his responsibility of protecting lives, properties and maintaining public peace in Edo State by standing against infringement on rights of Edo people. We beg him to advise the Edo commissioner of police to be professional in his duty.”

But, in a swift reaction, Governor Obaseki said on the contrary, Oshiomhole was the one creating crisis and disrupting peace and safety.

In a statement by his spokesman, Obaseki claimed Oshiomhole along with other dissidents who were members of the Edo People’s Movement (EPM) have been making frantic efforts to make Edo ungovernable.

“They have been setting fire to market places and public buildings and creating all sorts of chaos in the state.

The state government has warned that the embattled national chairman and his co-dissidents in the EPM, are hellbent on causing a breakdown of law and order in the state.

“Oshiomhole has disobeyed orders by the police at the federal and state levels not to hold public gatherings against the directives of the state government.

His actions have led to the hospitalisation of tens of Edo people and the destruction of properties valued in millions of naira.

“From Edo South to Edo North, he has traded in violence and left many in anguish in the wake of his strong-headed approach to entrenching himself as a godfather in the state. Even with this, he has not relented, but rather continues to fan the embers of division, acting as if he is above the law in the state.

“We call on the IGP and the Presidency to call Oshiomhole to order. His ambition to become a godfather in Edo State is not worth the safety of the four million people in our state.”

Meanwhile, crisis rocking the state chapter of APC, turned bloody yesterday as a top member of the party, Henry Idahagbon narrowly escaped death as gunmen suspected to be hired assassins attacked him in his office.

Two persons were, however, said to have sustained bullet injuries during the attack.

One of those injured and said to be APC ward chairman, was said to have been rushed to an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment.

Besides, restaurant at the ground floor of the building was severely damaged by the rampaging gunmen.

Idahagbon, a former attorney general and commissioner for justice, said the gunmen, who came in three vehicles, fired several shots at his office located on Siluko Road.

Adams disturbing the peace and safety of the state – Edo cried ..

The Edo State Government has accused the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, of repeatedly breaching the peace and safety of the state.

It said the national chairman caused disruptions that led to bodily harm to citizens and destruction of public and private property.

In a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, the government said Oshiomhole’s disregard for directives had continued to generate tension.

He said, “In the past few months, the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, has repeatedly breached the peace and safety of Edo State.

“He has continued to defy the judiciary, violate their orders; disregard the police, while orders from the Inspector-General of Police were treated with disdain.”

The SSG said that some various acts of lawlessness allegedly perpetrated by Oshiomhole were the attacks on Governor Godwin Obaseki; Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu; the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu and Dr. Aderemi Makanjuola, among other guests.

“The next was when he disregarded the order of the Inspector-General of Police, stopping him from organising a political rally in Benin City. Oshiomhole attempted to hold the rally, which left many injured and property worth millions destroyed,” he said.

He added that Oshiomhole had continued to parade one Col. David Imuse (retd.) as chairman of the APC in the state, in violation of a court order.

Ogie said, “By so doing, Oshiomhole has continued to show the world that he is above all the laws and institutions of the land and can violate the orders of the courts, the police and the state government just to massage his political ego that is rapidly being deflated by the day.

“But the Edo State Government needs Oshiomhole to understand that the state and the country are governed by laws. These laws are upheld by institutions that must be respected by highly-placed politicians and everyone else.”
