Koeman focuses more on Alaves than PSG

Barcelona must negotiate a LaLiga encounter against Deportivo Alavés before their pivotal Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Ronald Koeman insists the match in LaLiga between Barcelona and Deportivo Alavés is more important to him than discussing Paris Saint-Germain or Neymar.

A huge Champions League last-16 tie between Barça and PSG begins at Camp Nou on Tuesday and Neymar has been ruled out against his former club through injury.

But Barça boss Koeman stressed the home Alavés match on Saturday was most important to him because it is what comes next.

He also suggested he was considering squad rotation but would not make significant changes prior to the PSG game because he lacks options.

Copa del Rey defeat to Sevilla
Barça lost 2-0 to Sevilla last time out on Wednesday in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie. It was their first defeat inside 90 minutes in 17 matches across all competitions.

But they have won seven and drawn one of their last eight LaLiga games with Alavés.

“I don’t think Neymar is an Alavés player,” Koeman said when asked about the injury to the PSG forward.

Focused on Alavés
“This is a question for Monday, not for today. I’m not talking about Neymar, I’m not talking about PSG.

“Saturday’s game is more important than Tuesday’s. We are going game by game and we want to continue our good streak.

“The result of the Sevilla game is there but we played a very good game. If we repeat the game, we do not lose.

“We dominated in many areas against Sevilla, but you also have to have a bit of luck. We need freshness, but the team is feeling very well.

“You don’t play a second half like we did in Seville if the team is not physically well.”

Defenders Gerard Piqué and Ronald Araújo are unlikely to be risked against Alavés.

Koeman added: “Sergino Dest, Miralem Pjanic and Martin Braithwaite have done something [in training on Friday].

Koeman not rushing back Piqué
“[On Saturday] there is training and we will decide if they are on the squad list.

“For Araújo or Piqué, I always believe in the margin of a risk. The objective is to recover players until the end of the season.

“If it is the last game of the season, you can risk more, but I am not in favour of risking a lot for a game.

“Those players have to recover well and step by step. If they are there and they can play, even better.”

On the prospect of rotation, he continued: “Of course there are players who have been playing for many minutes with us not having everyone available.

“You have to think about giving rest to those players to be well in the next game. [But] not many [will be rotated], because there is not much we can change either.

“We look at the players, we train and we will decide. By winning the game, you are always mentally less tired than when you don’t win.

“The goal is to win. But first you have to play and it will be difficult.”

The Alavés match will start a run of four consecutive home games and Koeman added: “It’s good to have back-to-back games at home because you save yourself traveling.

“We can rest more now and hopefully we will get players back to start having a very competitive squad again.

“It is good to see the youth team players and the youngsters play, but we need our more competitive players back.”

Lionel Messi has scored 10 goals against Alavés in LaLiga in as many appearances against them, including four in his last three.

If he plays against Alavés, he will equal the record held by Xavi for most Barça league appearances by playing in his 504th top-flight match.

Facundo Pellistri ‘soon to seal’ La Liga loan from Manchester United

That made it important to find him a club where he could develop at a higher level.

Manchester United teenager Facundo Pellistri is expected to join La Liga side Deportivo Alaves on loan before the January transfer window closes at the start of next week.

Pellistri arrived at United from Uruguayan giants Peñarol in October for around £8m. The club has been determined to give him time to settle and adapt and he has so far only played for the Under-23 squad, despite regularly training with the first-team.

When a January loan became a likely possibility, it was noted that while Pellistri is not deemed ready to be playing in the United first-team, there is a feeling he has already outgrown Under-23 level.

United are thought to have ruled out the idea of a club in the Championship because of the physical nature of the league and Spain was always billed as a likely destination because of the language.

Celta Vigo was one of the rumoured clubs, but journalist Jonathan Shrager has reported that a move to Alaves should be completed by the end of Friday.

Currently 18th in La Liga, Basque side Alaves have struggled for goals this season, scoring just 18 in 20 games, while they have lost their last four in a row. Their current top scorers, with four each, are former Premier League duo Joselu and Lucas Perez.

“We want him to have regular football, of course, at a higher level [than the reserves],” United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said when discussing Pellistri’s immediate future.

Pellistri, who turned 19 in December, has been on the United first-team bench twice this season, both times during the Champions League group stage.

He has three goals and one assist to his name from eight Under-23 appearances in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.

Fans were hoping that the FA Cup third round tie against Championship side Watford might have presented an opportunity for his senior United debut. But Pellistri tested positive for coronavirus in the build up to the game and was forced to self-isolate.

Alaves Vs Barcelona, Pinchichi at stake for Messi

There’s not a lot for Barcelona to play for when they visit Alaves on Sunday, but there is for Leo Messi who is aiming to clinch the Pichichi prize.

The Argentine has always said that individual prizes are not important to him, but this would be a record seventh top scorer award which no other player has managed in almost 100 years of the competition.

Messi is on course to go one ahead of the great Telmo Zarra who also won six Pichichi prizes, as he stands on 23 goals, two ahead of Karim Benzema who will not have it easy against a Leganes side fighting for survival.

For Barcelona, it is the only real incentive after a league campaign to forget, as well as trying to develop some forward momentum and morale ahead of Champions League commitments.

However, it might not be easy with just 13 outfield players having travelled to Vitoria due to injuries and suspensions, as Antoine Griezmann, Samuel Umtiti, Ousmane Dembele, Ivan Rakitic, Junior Firpo and Gerard Pique will miss out.

Alaves, on their part, have already sealed survival after a 2-1 away win at Real Betis in their last outing, meaning they will not be under any pressure and can play with calm heads after months of uneasiness.

Atletico Bilbao wants to take advantage of Barcelona once again

Real Madrid trashed Alaves to top La Liga.

Sergio Ramos scored a goal and conceded a penalty as Real Madrid battled past Alaves on Saturday to go top of La Liga before Sunday’s game between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Barca and Atletico face off at the Wanda Metropolitano and Madrid did all they could to take advantage, with Dani Carvajal the unlikely match winner in a gritty 2-1 victory over Alaves.

“We know at these grounds that teams give everything against Madrid,” said Marcelo. “It’s in these matches that leagues are won.”

“We fought until the end,” added Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane.

Ramos had headed them in front shortly after half-time only to concede a needless penalty for throwing his arm across Joselu, which Lucas Perez converted before Carvajal poked in.

Madrid pull three points clear of Barcelona and six ahead of Atletico, who have played a game more than the top two. Sevilla, in third, host Leganes on Sunday. Alaves stay 13th.

A 1-0 defeat at Mendizorrotza 13 months ago came three weeks before Julen Lopetegui was sacked as a coach but this time Madrid showed the kind of steel that was so painfully lacking last season.

On a wet and windy afternoon in the Basque country, Zidane’s side never showed the verve and creativity that was so impressive in the draw against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

But this was a gutsy performance that means they have now won six and drawn two of their last eight matches in all competitions, with the Clasico against Barcelona next month fast approaching.

“A few weeks ago people were saying a lot about this team,” said Zidane. “But we have to stay the same, stay calm and keep working because this is just the start.”

Gareth Bale made his first Madrid start since October 5 after recovering from a calf injury and his first too since his controversial celebration with Wales earlier this month, which sparked anger among his club’s supporters.

Bale hit the post in the first half but faded and was replaced by Rodrygo after Alaves’ equaliser.

With Eden Hazard out injured, Isco also kept his place while Alphonse Areola was given a rare outing in goal ahead of the rested Thibaut Courtois.

Kroos The Provider
Madrid were lucky not to concede another penalty early on as Aleix Vidal slalomed inside Ramos and then Eder Militao, whose dangling leg caught Vidal’s foot. Referee Guillermo Cuadra felt the fall was exaggerated.

At the other end, Bale hit the post with a header and Karim Benzema latched onto a quick throw but instead of shooting, hooked the ball back for Isco whose effort was saved.

Alaves grew in confidence as the rain grew heavier yet Madrid regrouped at half-time and took the lead soon after as Ramos was given a free header to glance in Toni Kroos’ crossed free-kick.

But after scoring his sixth goal of the season, Ramos gifted Alaves an equaliser in the 66th minute by outmuscling Joselu in the penalty area, only to throw an arm across the forward’s chest. Perez made no mistake.

Bale went off for Rodrygo and Alaves might have been able to build on their momentum if they had consolidated.

Instead, parity lasted three minutes as Isco met Luka Modric’s cross at the back post and while Pacheco did brilliantly to save, Carvajal reacted faster than Victor Laguardia to the rebound.

Perez almost drove in a late equaliser but Marcelo made a diving block and Ximo Navarro’s header had to be clawed away by Areola as Madrid held on.
