Showers of tributes continued to rain, yesterday, for former Information Minister and media icon, Prince Tony Momoh, who expired on Monday evening aged 81.

Eminent Nigerians who eulogised the late elder statesman, yesterday were former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, retd; former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Senate President Ahmad Lawan; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki; Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State; and Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams among others.

In different ways, they outlined the virtues of the late lawyer, and politician that should be emulated, adding that his contributions to the enthronement of an egalitarian polity were invaluable.

We’ve lost a frank, blunt, articulate intellectual — IBB

Lamenting that Momoh’s demise is a sad chapter in the nation’s history, General Babangida said the Auchi Prince was frank, blunt and honest in his articulation of issues of national discourse.

Advertisements

In a condolence message he personally signed, Babangida recalled his time with the veteran journalist thus: “When Tony clocked 80 last year, we had opportunity to robustly engage and reminisce on our days and years in government, when we tapped so much from his reservoir of knowledge as our Minister of Information. He was such a teacher, a patriot, with uncommon brilliance, who deployed his intellect to shape national discourse in the course of our intervention in government. He was very blunt, honest, and frank when he needed to put issues across, and was fond of interrogating submissions to be sure they are based on facts. His sense of loyalty was profound.”

He continued: “I was utterly shocked yesterday (Monday) to learn of the death of this great Nigerian, such a rare enigma, a quintessential thorough-bred journalist and lawyer, a prince from the Auchi sacred kingdom, who carried his aura with remarkable presence of mind.

“Tony was a formidable mind, always worried about the place of Nigeria and Nigerians, in the scheme of things. He was a successful mass communicator, a didactic letter writer, a brilliant legal mind, a family man, and an unusual politician. He never hesitated to state his piece of mind, irrespective of who was involved. Once he believed in a cause, he followed through, no matter the outcome. As a principled prince, he was never frivolous and flippant. He was thorough, contented, well researched and essentially pan-Nigeria. His death, no doubt, has left a huge void in our heart of hearts.

“My condolences to the Momoh royal family of Auchi kingdom, particularly the Otaru of Auchi Kingdom, his widow, children, friends and associates. May Allah grant them the fortitude to bear this painful loss.

“Last year presented an opportunity to thank him for his support and contributions to nation-building; I never knew death would snatch him away so soon. It truly hurts. Let me specially console his son Rasheed at this mournful moment. You need to be a man to rally the family together. God will grant you the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss.”

We lost a man of peace, a bridge builder — Oshiomhole

To Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Nigeria has lost a peaceful man and bridge builder.

In a statement, the former governor of Edo State said Prince Tony Momoh played politics without bitterness and stamped his feet in the sands of time as a “journalist , administrator, public commentator, and conscience of the political elite,” adding, “I have lost an elder brother, counsellor, political ally and a dear friend.’’

Said Oshiomhole: “Prince Tony Momoh was a man of peace, a bridge builder and a trailblazer, whose impressive career mentored a whole new generation of present day leaders in the media, public service and academia.

“He played politics without bitterness, but with exceptional maturity and a unique ability to accommodate diverse opinions even when they were against his beliefs. As Minister of Information & Culture at a very critical moment in Nigeria’s political history, he introduced a novel channel of communication with the people in his acclaimed “Letters To My Countrymen” series through which he periodically explained policies of government to the governed while they too had the opportunity to react to the letters, which ultimately served as a feedback to government.

Advertisements

“He will ever be remembered as one of the very few principled, loyal and conscience driven politicians in Nigeria. His unique brand of unwavering loyalty and commitment to ideals is manifest in his political engagements as director of Media and Publicity for the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, Chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, and the critical role he played in the emergence of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.”

In his tribute, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, said Momoh’s demise was a sad development because he was “one Nigerian who contributed immensely to the development of the party (APC) and the country” and ‘’would be remembered for his selfless service to his fatherland.”

The Speaker sent his condolences to Momoh family, the people and Government of Edo State and prayed God to give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, even as he prayed eternal rest for the soul of the deceased.

Similarly, the Speaker also commiserated with Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa over the demise of her mother, Alhaja Sadiat Abeke Erogbogbo, a retired teacher and businesswoman at the age of 90.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said Prince Tony Momoh as a journalist made indelible contributions to the development of the noble profession in Nigeria, adding that the APC will miss the principled political leader.

In a statement by his Special Adviser, Ola Awoniyi, the Senate President commiserated with the government and people of Edo State and the APC, where he was a highly respected leader.

“Prince Tony Momoh as a journalist made indelible contributions to the development of the noble profession in Nigeria. As Minister of Information, Prince Momoh, through his ‘Letter to my countrymen’ series, professionally and effectively disseminated and managed public information in a manner that was unique to him.

“As chairman of the CPC, he helped nurture the party to a very strong showing at the polls within months of its formation.

‘’Prince Momoh was also a key facilitator of the emergence of the APC in 2014. The APC will miss this principled political leader particularly in this period that the party is repositioning as a grassroots-based political party and for improved performance of its leadership of our great country,” Lawan said.

In like manner, Governor Obaseki, celebrated the contributions of late Prince Momoh to the growth and development of Nigeria, describing him as a rare politician who spoke truth to power when it mattered the most.

His words: “It is with a heavy heart that I received the news of the death of veteran journalist and former Minister of Information and Culture, Prince Tony Momoh.

“Prince Momoh, though a great son of Edo State, was a total Nigerian. He was forthright, driven and spoke with candor. As a nationalist, he was unapologetic about the Nigerian project. His lasting legacy remains the enthronement of democratic values in Nigeria.

“A progressive and committed Nigerian, Prince Momoh’s wise counsel would be greatly missed especially as we navigate our current challenges as a nation.’’

Advertisements

Eulogising Prince Tony Momoh, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State said his contribution to the development of Nigeria is invaluable.

He regretted that Prince Momoh died when his statesmanly services are still required in the country, noting that Nigeria’s development story will not be complete without Prince Momoh’s contributions.

Advertisements

According to him, Prince Momoh impacted the society as a teacher, a journalist, a lawyer, a politician, among other numerous ways he deployed his talent in service to community, state and nation.

Besides, Governor Uzodimma said Prince Momoh remained vocal and truthful in causes he was convinced in, and believed so much in a united Nigeria where equity, justice, fairness should be the guiding principle.

He said the APC has lost a dependable statesman, ally and consummate party man whose legacies are there for all to see and learn from.

On his part, Iba Gani Adams said that Tony Momoh’s death has created a huge vacuum for the progressives.

Adams, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, described the late Momoh as a genuine leader with a mind of his own, adding that he was one of the leading patriots who offered their wealth of experiences for national progress and development.

The statement read in part: “It is with deep sense of sorrow that I mourn the death of one of the heroes of this democracy. The late Momoh was a worthy ambassador of our country, a model to all the progressives, a leading journalist, and consummate politician.

“The late Tony Momoh during his lifetime was one of our heroes in the struggle for this democracy. He was an Apostle of restructuring, and one of the leading voices in national politics. Most times, he attends our programmes without rigour. The late Tony Momoh lived a worthy life, bringing to bear his deep thoughts and valuable ideas to national politics.

Advertisements

“The recent interview he granted a national daily (Vanguard) truly showed the stuff he was made of and I feel sad that the late Tony Momoh’s death came as a rude shock and at a time when his wealth of experiences are still needed most.

“With his death, it is no doubt that we have lost one of our great men, whose generation of patriots are depleting by the day. And I want to assure Nigerians that we will not relent in our efforts, by ensuring that the ideals he lived and died for remained evergreen in our minds.

Governor Obaseki of Edo hails Court after ‘certificate forgery clearance’

The governor added that the verdict confirmed, once again, that the Edo people were well-guided in trusting him to lead them in the September 2020 governorship election.

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo has commended the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on the certificate forgery case levelled against him by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obaseki gave the commendation in a statement issued to newsmen on Saturday in Benin.

According to him, the judgement is a triumph of the rule of law and a testament to the fact that truth will prevail ultimately, no matter how vehemently detractors push lies in the face of incontrovertible evidence.

He said that the verdict, delivered by Justice Ahmed Mohammed, was well-received as a victory for the rule of law.

“It is the needless attempt by desperate individuals, trying to undo the will of the people through the backdoor, but we are happy today that justice and truth have prevailed,’’ he said.

He promised to continue to prioritise the development of the state, irrespective of all odds.

“My profound gratitude goes to the judiciary who have stood indefatigably for truth and justice and the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari.’’

Obaseki also thanked the People’s Democratic Party, the party leaders and members as well as his teeming supporters and people of Edo State for standing with him.

EdoDecide’20: Oshiomhole reveal Buhari’s reaction to free and fair Election.

Advertisements

President Muhammadu Buhari has restated his commitment to a free and fair governorship election in Edo State and is “excited at the prospect.”

Former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole quoted President Buhari as saying this when the duo met at the Presidential Villa on Monday.

He said he also briefed the President on happenings in Edo State and quoted Buhari as saying that anyone who engages in unlawful activities before during and after the Edo polls will face the law.

“The President is excited at the prospect of having a free and fair election devoid of violence and the fact that the laws are clear; when people misuse firearms, the laws are clear as to what should be done,” the former Edo governor told reporters after the meeting.

Advertisements

According to Oshiomhole, President Buhari has always emphasised that the rights of voters be respected.

Clear Attitude

“His attitude is clear: Nigerian electorates, their rights must always be respected and anybody using unlawful weapons; violence to intimidate the electorate, the President will never support such causes,” he explained. “And on that, we are together.”

He added that “It does not matter the party anybody belongs to, the laws are the same.”

Oshiomhole also decried the tensed atmosphere in Edo State in the leadup to the governorship poll.

Advertisements

“I have run elections as the governor of Edo State three times, and there was no violence,” he added.

The ex-National Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) wondered what “has changed now that the people have suddenly started talking about violence?”

Presidential Endorsement
The Edo governorship election is billed for September 19 with President Buhari earlier in the month endorsing the candidate of the APC for the poll, Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Buhari had during the endorsement held at the Presidential Villa, presented the symbolic party flag to Ize-Iyamu at a closed-door meeting attended by his Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, and some APC governors.

All Oshiomhole requested was my help to impeach Obaseki – Philip Shaibu

Advertisements

The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has said his loyalty to Governor Godwin Obaseki is unwavering.

In a chat with newsmen on Thursday, Mr Shaibu revealed how former APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, wanted him to join in the move to unseat Obaseki.

Shaibu said he begged Oshiomhole to let go of any grievance he had against Obaseki because the governor was doing well for the Edo People, a plea which Shaibu says fell on deaf ears.

The Edo deputy governor went on to reveal that on realizing that Oshiomhole had declared a war against the governor, he told the former governor that he will stand with Obaseki come what may.

Advertisements

According to Philip Shaibu, the ploy was to remove governor Obaseki at the onset and replace him with his deputy, but he said he refused, stating that it was not his “will nor nature” to betray.

Mr. Shaibu recounted how he fought on Oshiomhole’s side, stressing that he hates and has been fighting against oppression, and will not stand for the form of oppression which Oshiomhole is championing.

The deputy governor said he will fight to the very last to ensure that Obaseki is defended, the same way he defended Oshiomhole when there were plots against him in Edo State.

He, however, challenged Oshiomhole to come and test his popularity when the votes are to be cast, claiming that the former chairman of the APC has lost his integrity and is no more the man of the people he once was perceived to be.

EdoDecide’20: Adams Oshiomhole no longer possess political relevance

Advertisements

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Edo State Campaign Council, Dan Orbih says the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Mr Adams Oshiomhole is a man that has lost his political relevance and should not be taken seriously.

He claimed that Oshiomhole’s loyalists in government have made demands on Governor Godwin Obaseki but the Edo leader has been unwavering in his stance that he would not use the money meant for development of the State for any other purpose.

Orbih was speaking in Igarra, Akoko Edo Local Government Area, where the party kicked off a tour of the 192 wards to canvass support for Governor Obaseki who is in the race for a second term in office at the September 19 governorship election in the state.

Advertisements

“Those Oshiomhole put in Government have been making demands on the governor: ‘Give us Edo State Government money so that we will stay with you.’” But the governor told them, ‘If you want to go, go. Edo State money is for the development of Edo State.’”

He promised more economic development in the areas of job creation and infrastructure, adding that government’s funds will not be diverted into the hands of a few.

Blackmail?
Orbih believes also that the recent defections from the party is an attempt to blackmail Obaseki who is seeking a second term in office.

His comment was in reaction to the defection of the Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Yekini Idaye and four other members of the House to the opposition APC.

Advertisements

The lawmakers are among the 10 that were inaugurated in July 2019 while 14 others remain yet to be inaugurated.

According to the lawmakers, their decision is to remain in the APC on whose platform they were elected.

Obaseki had on Monday kicked off his re-election campaign in Akoko Edo Local Government Area, Edo North Senatorial District, promising to build on the good foundation his administration has laid in the last three years and eight months, with an economic blueprint that will address the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

With the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, the people need a leader with focus, and one that is genuinely concerned about the well-being of the people of the state, the Edo governor had said during the campaign.

News+: Telling lies won’t restore your drowning image – Osagie blasts Oshiomhole

Advertisements

The Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, has challenged the former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, to be courageous enough to tell Nigerians the truth about the circumstances that led to his removal, as bandying lies on national television will not save his drowning political image.

Osagie who was responding to claims made by Oshiomhole on Monday morning noted that “no amount of lies can controvert the fact that Oshiomhole’s political misfortune is self-inflicted.”

According to the governor’s aide, “Contrary to the narrative being advanced by the sacked national chairman that he was a victim of power play, Nigerians who have followed the events that led to Oshiomhole’s ouster closely, can attest to the fact that he was a victim of his own indiscretion and unholy machinations.

Advertisements

“In fact, in Edo State, Oshiomhole was the powerful force that millions of Edo people fought against, so that the governor could breathe and deliver good governance to them.”

“Nigerians know that Oshiomhole was sacked for his gross abuse of power and not the narrative he has been bandying on television. His obsession with power and absolute control of the same, drove the APC to a near-catastrophic situation.

“He was elected to build on the achievements of his predecessor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, but he frittered away the enormous goodwill he inherited and embarked on personal battles that cost the APC such states like Zamfara, Sokoto, Oyo and created factions within the National Working Committee of the APC. So it was only natural that the consequences of the strife, crisis, and divisions that he caused would come calling someday.

“In Edo State, Oshiomhole turned against Governor Obaseki when the governor failed to yield to his subservience and his grand plot to rule by proxy. He literally invaded the Edo APC and set up parallel structures to hijack it. His predecessor, Chief Odigie-Oyegun allowed the state’s structure of the APC to carry out its activities without any interference. To Oshiomhole’s immoderation, Edo State is today a PDP state and we are free from his inanities.

Advertisements

“The former national chairman of the APC mortgaged the internal cohesion of the party, which ought to have been his primary task, for personal interest and set the APC on a roller coaster to disaster until the president intervened.”

He added: “Today, Oshiomhole has found it convenient to rewrite history, by playing the victim in an event he was the sole protagonist. But Nigerians will not fall for such a trick.”

On Oshiomhole’s claim that Obaseki does not have a manifesto, Osagie explained: “Obaseki has since unveiled his Making Edo Great Again (MEGA) manifesto to Edo people and the manifesto is clear about the direction the Obaseki-led government will take the state in the next four years.”

Osagie queried, “How can a man that Oshiomhole publicly acknowledged as the brain box of his eight-year administration not have a manifesto?

Advertisements

“Oshiomhole keeps running from one issue to another when confronted with facts and superior argument. He once called Governor Obaseki an MoU Governor. But the moment we confronted him with photographs of the CCETC-Ossiomo Independent power plant project that is awaiting commissioning; the Benin Refinery project which is at 70% completion; the EDPA-Mixta Nigeria Housing Estate and several other projects birthed by Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), the former governor, stopped calling Obaseki an MoU governor.

“Edo people are very intelligent people who cannot be deceived with lies and propaganda. We have facts on the ground in virtually all sectors of the state that speak to the performance of the Obaseki-led government.

“The Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation programme (EDOBEST) has attracted the attention of several state and national governments who have come to understudy the policy.”

Oshiomhole said this during an interview, while responding to a question about whether Obaseki’s popularity was a threat to his party.

“How can he be a threat? A man who is not even eligible to contest elections? How can a snail be a threat in a race where tigers are involved?,” he said.

The ex-APC chairman had earlier said that he was confident in the party’s governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s ability to lead the state on the path of progressive development if elected in the September 19 governorship election

EdoDecide’20: Ize-iyamu not good product, you can’t sell such – Wike tells Oshiomhole

Advertisements

Ahead of the September 19 governorship election in Edo State, the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, as a bad product.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications in Rivers State, Paulinus Nsirim, Governor Wike said ex-APC Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, had explicitly exposed the true identity of Ize-Iyamu.

The governor said it is an insult to Edo people for Oshiomhole to reverse his earlier position and ask the electorates to accept such a man.

Advertisements

Wike was said to have made the comments during an interview with a national television network in the state.

“After an analysis, backed with supporting video footages from the campaigns of the last election in the state, he declared with unequivocal clarity, that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the Edo State Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC is a bad product and you cannot sell a bad product to good and discerning people of Edo State,” the statement partly read.

According to Governor Wike, he drew his conclusion from the analysis of facts deducted from the previous governorship election in the state.

Advertisements

“Adams Oshiomhole told Edo people that Ize Iyamu was rusticated from school; that he poured acid on a fellow student that destroyed his manhood. That he is an armed robber that cannot be trusted with money. Such a character cannot be accepted by Edo people as Governor during the election.

“I respect the Binin tradition and I know that Edo people are educated to know that Oshiomhole cannot play on their intelligence. If he is now retracting what he said of Ize Iyamu, who is sure that he’s saying the correct thing now.

“Adams Oshiomhole’s sudden U-turn is a great insult on Edo people. This is an opportunity for Edo people both at home and in the diaspora to use their votes to tell Oshiomhole that they cannot take his lies anymore.

“From all indications, it is obvious that there is no strong opposition against Obaseki and he will win convincingly,” Wike was quoted to have said.

EdoDecide’20: Oshiomhole declares war against Obaseki

The ousted national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and embattled godfather of Edo politics, Adams Oshiomhole, on Sunday came out of his brief political holidays, declaring his mission to unseat incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and enthrone Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as his successor in the September 19, 2020, Edo governorship election.

Noble Reporters Media snaps Oshiomhole in a tweet on his twitter handle on Sunday where he declared that his mission is to return Edo State to the path of sustainable development, which he felt Obaseki has failed to do. The former APC chairman noted that his silence since his removal as APC national chairman was not an act of cowardice. He berated Obaseki, declaring that the Edo governor has no agenda for the governorship election, noting that Ize-Iyamu has been selling his Simple Agenda to the people of Edo State but Obaseki has been selling propaganda.

Noble Reporters Media accordingly, reports that Oshiomhole in his tweet declared: “I have only one mission and I know it is our common mission to bring Edo Back to the paths of Sustainable Development.

“One with God is majority, keeping calm is not always an act of cowardice.

“While Pastor Ize-Iyamu is busy selling his Simple Agenda, letting people know his plans for Edo State, Obaseki is busy selling propaganda because he has no agenda to sell, he never had any at any time.”

Noble Reporters Media follow up on the Edo election found that meanwhile, Governor Obaseki has sustained wide communication and interactions with the people of Edo State rendering account of his first tenure and reassuring them of a better second tenure. The contest is clearly between Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu, including Oshiomhole.

However, Oshiomhole may be using this comment to build his return to the public space after wide circulation of his strong demarketing of Ize-Iyamu in 2016 which many people in Edo State and beyond also believed. Invariably, Oshiomhole may be struggling with marketing Ize-Iyamu who is sponsoring in the September election to the people of Edo State.

Refusal to pay pensions – Oshiomhole’s fall – APC ward says

Advertisements

The Ward 10 Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, Mr Stephen Oshawo, on Thursday gave reasons why he suspended the party’s national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

According to Oshawo, who spoke at an event in Benin, Oshiomhole did not pay his pensions for eight months when he was governor of the state, adding that the pension backlog did not take Governor Godwin Obaseki one month to pay when he (Obaseki) assumed office.

He said: “You know, this government believes in development and the masses. The truth is that, when the former government (Oshiomhole) was in power as the governor of the state, I was an insider, I was the chairman of Ward 10. I suffered many things and nobody knew me or recognised me.

Former APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole

“As a chairman to the governor of the state, I couldn’t receive my gratuity as a pensioner and as a chairman to Oshiomhole when he was still the governor of the state, I was not able to get my pension for eight months, but when Godwin Obaseki came in, it didn’t take him up to a month, he paid my gratuity and not only me but all the pensioners in Edo State.”

EdoDecide’20: Oshiomhole endorses Obaseki – reject Ize-iyamu

Advertisements

The former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, leaves in his trail an endorsement catalogue of encomiums on Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the September 19 governorship election, including his outright condemnation and rejection of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, APC candidate.

Read Oshiomhole’s 12 significant endorsement remarks on Governor Obaseki.

  1. God knows that Godwin comes from a large family in Benin Kingdom; he went to school, he finished his secondary school; he went to the University of Ibadan, he finished; there were no issues, he finished in flying colours.
  2. He went to the US, he did his Masters; he came back home, started helping people to set up businesses. He helped to manage businesses; he helped to set up many banks, including several second-generation banks.
  3. I don’t care if Obaseki betrays me at the end of the day, Obaseki allegiance should be to the people and not me.
  4. The oath of office he is going subscribe to says that he will defend the Constitution of Nigeria; he will do everything to uplift the quality of life of Edo people. Nothing in his oath of office will include “I shall not betray my predecessor” because I have no interest to be betrayed.
  5. Obaseki had been part of the tradition, he knows the vision; he knows the mission; he knows the target; he knows where we are; he knows the challenges and he knows how to overcome them.
  6. He sits in the Office of the Economic Team which he built using his network of friends inside the heart of Government House without demanding one Naira.
  7.  I know my limit; he knows his limit. Godwin Obaseki has worked for seven and half years for the people of Edo State, using his brain, creativity, quietly, not making noise.
  8. A man like Obaseki who will not ask me to give him contracts, but will promise me, Comrade, you just do the thinking, we will create the means to actualize your thoughts.
  9. And to his credit today, check the books of Edo State, we did not build new structures in Government House with government money. That economic team office was built through Godwin’s network. Today, it remains a permanent asset of the state government.
  10.  I want us to be calling that building – I don’t see your opponent – Ize-Iyamu being able to say that.
  11.  In 2007, check the records, Ize-Iyamu was hiding from EFCC. He did not vote. How can somebody who didn’t vote claim he made me.
  12.  If you have to look at Godwin and his credentials, and you look at a man whose only work, by his CV, was a student, and was rusticated for two years, he read law, but he is not barrister.
Adams Oshiomhole falling into politics suicide

Invariably, Oshiomhole may be falling into political suicide, and could make the APC campaign for the Edo governorship election complicated in marketing Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as the party’s candidate.

Ize-Iyamu has, however, attempted an image laundry, saying that all the Oshiomhole said about him in the past did not come from his heart. However, the words have gone forth, people have assimilated the words; Ize-Iyamu also did not challenge either the words or Oshiomhole from whom the words proceeded. Edo people are furiously waiting for the APC campaign team to hear what the APC members will tell them this time, especially, Oshiomhole. They are on red alert against deceit, dishonesty, and insincerity.

Breaking: Oba of Benin deny attack on Buhari, Oshiomhole. | Details

Advertisements

The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Ewuare II has disowned a video currently trending on social media by one Eranomigho Edegbe which hurled invectives and insults on President Muhammadu Buhari just as he reiterated his deep love for the former chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

In a statement in Benin City on Tuesday by Mr Frank Irabor, the Secretary of Benin Traditional Council (BTC), the Oba vehemently denied authorising the video by Edegbe, insisting that the said video and the contents therein were neither commissioned nor was it encouraged by the monarch.

Irabor said that the revered royal father condemned in the strongest terms the malicious attacks on the integrity of President Buhari and all other persons whom the video seeks to malign.

The scribe said: “We wish to state unequivocally that our love for Mr President is unparalleled as the relationship shared dates back to the days of His Royal Majesty, Oba Erediauwa (of blessed memory), the immediate past Oba of Benin. This relationship was further strengthened when Mr President headed the President Trust Fund (PTF).”

The Omo N’Oba stated that Oshiomhole has always respected not just the traditional institutions in Edo State, but also the palace of the Oba of Benin, adding that his affection by Oba Erediauwa who adopted the immediate past chairman as a son is well known and was reinforced during his tenure as governor of Edo State.

Advertisements

He said: “We were happy to convene a send forth for him upon the expiration of his two terms, where his Royal Majesty used the ada (traditional sword) of the ancestors to pray for his protection, a thing quite rare in Benin custom. We are glad that the prayers said on him continue to be efficacious in all his endeavours.”

The monarch also tackled Eranomigho over his utterances against a businessman, Captain Hosa Okunbor, noting that he is an illustrious son of the palace of the Oba who at all times has worked in support of the monarch.

The statement added: “These utterances and behaviour of Eranomigho and his cohorts show that they are not happy and comfortable with the cordial relationship between the Palace of the Oba of Benin and the Presidency.

“Furthermore, it shows that some disgruntled elements like Eranomigho have deep animosity against Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Captain Hosa Okunbor.”

APC, House of Riot – Will NEC sack Oshiomhole? – By Timothy Enietan-Matthews

Advertisements

The leadership crisis rocking the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to have come to a head with the reported recognition of Chief Victor Giadom as the authentic acting National Chairman of the party by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday.

The crisis, which has been long running, assumed a more pronounced proportion last week when the Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja, upheld the suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who had, before the judgment of the court, engaged in a running battle with several elements in the party, including governors and key members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), but on several occasions, survived the onslaughts against him like a cat with nine lives.

His bitter struggle with his former ally and successor in office, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, for the soul of the Edo chapter of the party, leading to his suspension by his ward, however, set the stage for his current travails.

As the leader of the party, Buhari’s recognition of Giadom, whose position as Deputy National Secretary of the party, had earlier been declared vacant on the ground that he resigned shortly before the 2019 general elections to contest for the office of Deputy Governor of Rivers State, has no doubt tactically put the air out of efforts at salvaging whatever may remain of Oshiomhole’s survival strategies as the Chairman of the party.

In a Twitter post on Wednesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said: “The President has received very convincing advice on the position of the law as far as the situation in the party is concerned and has determined that the law is on the side of Victor Giadom as Acting National Chairman.

Advertisements

“Because he will always act in accordance with the law, the President will be attending the virtual meeting Giadom called for tomorrow afternoon.

“We urge the media to stop promoting manufactured controversies and to not give any further room for mischievous interpretations of the law on this matter.

“In addition to the President, the Giadom meeting will, hopefully, be attended by our governors and the leaders of the National Assembly.”

With this, Giadom, who no doubt has the support of several elements in the party that are opposed to the reign of Oshiomhole and his style, may have dealt a fatal blow to the ego of the former labour leader and clipped his wings.

Advertisements

The present scenario may, however, have its rippling effect on the party, negatively and positively, depending on what divide major players in the APC power game belong.

The convening of a virtual/physical meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party by Giadom, which had been endorsed by President Buhari, may no doubt turn out to be a master stroke by him and his backers. Oshiomhole had stubbornly avoided convening NEC meetings, to among other things, give legal backing to many of his actions through ratification as provided for by the party’s Constitution.

The refusal by Oshiomhole to convene the NEC, has been one of the issues used by his traducers to attack him, labeling him autocratic. It is expected that the meeting will provide the needed encouragement for anti-Oshiomhole forces in the party to finally go for the kill. Will that happen?

The unfolding scenario does not just point to a bad omen for Oshiomhole and his hold on the party, it also potentially stands as a fatally disruptive development for a number of projections and actions taken before now, while at the same time, holding out the chance to advance some other interests in the party.

Advertisements

Will the unfolding scenario have any major impact on the outcome of the Edo State Governorship Election Screening Committee? This is one major question many Nigerians and supporters of the APC will be asking as the party’s NEC holds today.

Recall that Governor Obaseki was stopped from contesting the primary of the APC by the screening committee of the party, allegedly on the order of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who had tacitly given his support to Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and who eventually was declared winner of the exercise. Giadom, however, overruled the decision of the screening committee to stop Obaseki immediately he declared himself the acting National Chairman of the party.

It is also believed that both Giadom and Obaseki are staunch allies of the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, while Ize-Iyamu belongs to the camp of the embattled Oshiomhole, making Ize-Iyamu’s position in the new scheme of things, if it stands, a bit shaky. It is however not certain if the party will be willing to take another risk that may lead to another Rivers or Zamfara scenario.

Is Oshiomhole finally biting the dust?

Giving the barrage of opposition to Oshiomhole’s leadership of the party, especially from members of the influential Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), will it be safe to say that the former Edo State Governor’s reign as the National Chairman of the party has come to an end?

Advertisements

Will the NEC meeting bar him from approaching the Supreme Court to seek redress? Will NEC members turn their back on him, as some already did?

Judging from what has been happening in the party overtime, these are, no doubt, high possibilities. And with the possible boycott of today’s NEC meeting by pro-Oshiomhole members of the NWC, his fate may just have been sealed.

The pro-Oshiomhole NWC said in a statement signed by Hillard Etta, the National Vice Chairman (South-South) and Waziri Bulama, the acting National Secretary on Wednesday night: The statement read, “We wish to unequivocally state that members of the National Working Committee believe that the President was offered wrong advice or blackmailed into lending his weighty office to the illegality of the National Executive Committee meeting purportedly convened by one Victor Giadom on 25th June, 2020.

“We hereby respectfully implore Mr. President to kindly avail himself with facts of the matter regarding the impasse presently experienced by the party so as to guide him in his assessment of the matter because we are sure that the President if properly advised, would come to the conclusion that the meeting convened by Chief Victor Giadom bothers on illegality and criminality.

Advertisements

“The National Working Committee regrets to turn down the invitation to the illegal and unconstitutional national executive committee convened by Chief Victor Giadom.

“We believe that attending such a meeting will amount to embracing illegalities and turning a blind eye to the infractions on the constitution of our great party. “

For informed and keen followers of happenings in APC, the recent curious silence of the governors elected on the platform of the party, especially in the last one week, speaks volume. It must also be noted that the governors had made efforts to save Obaseki, who was one of them before he dumped the party for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), without success.

For many of the governors, Oshiomhole has been overbearing and excessive in the handling of the party’s affairs, and had made several efforts at ousting him from office.

Advertisements

The outspoken disposition of the Director General of the PGF, Salisu Lukman, is believed in many quarters to bear the seal of approval of the governors and as such they are most likely to use this opportunity to finally nail Oshiomhole’s coffin.

Lukman said shortly after the Obaseki was disqualified: “It is clear that, APC leadership as currently constituted under the leadership of Comrade Oshiomhole is imprudent and cannot be entrusted with the task of leading the party.

“Comrade Oshiomhole’s NWC has hawked the soul of the party to political buccaneers whose narrow interest is just about unfairly winning elections.

“APC does not belong to anybody. It is a product of sacrifice by leaders and members of our old legacy parties.

Advertisements

“Nobody should contemplate leaving the party on account of the rascality going on in the party under Comrade Oshiomhole’s leadership. All members of the party and lovers of democracy in Nigeria must rise against what is going on in APC. It is a struggle for the soul of APC.”

Like Oshiomhole, like Giadom

APC NWC tackles Giadom over NEC meeting

Though President Muhammadu Buhari has recognized Victor Giadom as the authentic acting National Chairman of the APC and has endorsed the NEC meeting called by him, the victory celebration may be short lived if pro-Oshiomhole forces in the party decide to go after him.

Giadom’s recognition may most likely throw a new leadership crisis in the party, as Oshiomhole supporters will not fold their hands and allow a member who, aside his purported resignation from the NWC, has been suspended by his state chapter of the party.

A faction of the APC in Rivers State led by Senator Magnus Abe had recently suspended Giadom from the party, and immediately nominating a replacement for him at the NWC in the person of a former Attorney General in the state, Worgu Boms.

Advertisements

Aside his suspension by the Magnus Abe led faction, two High Courts in Rivers State had also sealed his suspension, making his leadership of the APC a shaky one and akin to that of Oshiomhole. Will Giadom also suffer the fate of Oshiomhole, thereby continuing the recent instabilities in the party? Only time can tell!

Also left to be seen is how the President Buhari-backed acting National Chairman of the APC hopes to relate and carry along those who have openly opposed him and worked against his emergence.

Will Giadom follow in the footsteps of Oshiomhole and embark on a regime of vengeance and high handedness? What becomes of the 17 members of the NWC loyal to Oshiomhole? How would he work with them, especially Hilliard Etta, Waziri Bulama, Lanre Issa-Onilu amongst others?

More importantly, what will be Giadom’s disposition towards ‘enemies from home’ as represented by Magnus Abe and Iko Aguma, who suspended him from the party and named a replacement for him?

Advertisements

Can the emergence of Giadom put to an end the protracted crisis in the Rivers State chapter of the APC, or will it further fuel it, especially with the unrelenting and adamant vigour with which the opposing camps have been pursuing their different positions. Questions and more questions only the players and their actions on the coming days can answer.

Rotimi Amaechi, the new kingmaker?

Those in PDP are rich men, we in APC are poor people –Amaechi

The Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi must be a happy man at the moment for successfully enthroning one of his close allies at the helm of affairs of the ruling party.

Giadom belongs to the Amaechi led faction of the party in Rivers and had actually picked him as the deputy governorship candidate of the party in the state before the intra-party crisis in the state chapter robbed it of participation in the 2019 governorship election.

Advertisements

For many, Amaechi had been the unseen hand propping Giadom on in his many bitter battles with other members of the APC NWC, and his efforts seem to have paid off handsomely.

Amaechi’s active involvement in the crisis came to the fore immediately the NWC declared Giadom’s office vacant, as his faction in Rivers came out smoking, declaring that Giadom is not just the Deputy National Secretary of the party but also the acting National Chairman of the party. They also declared the state chapter chairman of the party, Iko Aguma, removed from office and replaced.

Shortly after that, a video emerged online with some youths spoiling for war, with a threat to burn down Rivers State if anything is done against the minister. It became curious why the threat, because as at that time, nothing much had been associated with Amaechi actively in the national leadership crisis.

As it stands, Amaechi may be having the last laugh, and enjoying the moment, even if it is temporary!

Will Oshiomhole give up trying?

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is a known fighter; a man who never gives up trying!

Right from his labour activism days, he has been known to be a long distance runner when it comes to struggles, and that has been his staying power since he became the National Chairman of the APC, fighting battles on different fronts and surviving. Will this be different?

Though the Court of Appeal has spoken, Oshiomhole still has another legal window, the Supreme Court, and as expected, he may approach the apex court for a final adjudication. If he wins at the Supreme Court, the stage would now be set for a final onslaught against the ‘renegades’ in the party. Time, only time will tell!

2023 in focus?

The consensus among many Nigerians is that the leadership crisis rocking the ruling party is closely related to the 2023 presidential elections and the attempt by several of the top players in the party to properly put themselves in pole position for advantage.

Advertisements

According to analysts, the current efforts at dislodging the Oshiomhole-led leadership of the party may not be unconnected with powers that be to weaken the support base of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is believed to be eyeing the presidency come 2023.

Oshiomhole is a know ally of Tinubu, who has enjoyed his support right from his struggle to become Edo State Governor, and Tinubu is believed to have played a prominent role in his emergence and stay as National Chairman. For many, successfully edging out Oshiomhole from office will put some spanners in the works for Tinubu’s ambition, a possibility that may not be far from the truth.

How the acclaimed National Leader of the APC responds to the current crisis is yet to be seen, as he has maintained his now famous silence in the face of all the intrigues playing out.

As it stands, Nigerians will be waiting with baited breath for the outcome of today’s NEC meeting of the ruling party to know if the APC will finally nail the coffin of its garrulous chairman.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki said the defection of Governor Obaseki to the Peoples Democratic Party has exposed the suspended chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole.

Saraki, stated this while welcoming Obaseki to PDP on Friday.

Saraki said he had ignored Oshiomhole’s verbal attacks on him because he knew “a day like this would come when his masquerade will dance naked in the market.”

He added that the end of Oshiomhole’s political career is near.

Saraki said: “At this point, it will be odd if I fail to comment on the situation that led to the change of party by Governor Obaseki.

“While I have kept my cool and ignored all the verbal attacks directed at me by the suspended chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, I have always known that a day like this would come when his masquerade will dance naked in the market.

“The truth is always constant and no matter how far falsehood travels, the truth will catch up with it one day.

“Oshiomhole can fool people for a long time but he cannot fool the people all the time. What is happening to him now is a moment of truth.

“This same man who was garrulously proclaiming the end of the political career of some other people is now about to meet his Waterloo.

“He has continued to use his mouth to divide his party and I believe there is a lesson for all politicians to learn from the fate of the suspended APC chairman.

“No autocrat can successfully pretend to be a Democrat. The true character of a man will come out one day”, he said.

Saraki further stated all lovers of democracy should be interested in the emergence of a healthy and strong party system and organization which would provide viable platforms for people to aspire and provide quality leadership to the country.

APC Acting National Chairman Charge Oshiomhole

Advertisements

The acting National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Victor Giadom, on assumption of office on Wednesday, indicted the dethroned national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, over use of APC structures to fight for power control in his personal interest. He cautioned that the APC would no longer tolerate such. The emergent Ag. National chairman, therefore, upturned the decision of the screening committee which disqualified Governor Godwin Obaseki from contesting the APC primaries for the Edo State governorship election.
“Our party, the All Progressives Congress, will no longer allow local quests for the control of power to influence our decisions.

“As your Acting National Chairman and presiding officer in the NWC, we, therefore, cancel the decision of the Screening and Appeal Committees of the former Chairman of the party on the Edo primaries. This is in strict compliance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that forbids anyone who is interested in a cause to be a judge in that same cause,” Giadom declared in his inaugural speech on Wednesday.

Advertisements

He maintained: “It is a brazen rape on the Rule of Law and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the former Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomohle, to preside and select committees in respect to the Governorship primaries in Edo State being a key player in the crisis in that State. Whatever role the former Chairman was given to play in that process by the APC constitution, it cannot override the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which governs all of us.

“We, therefore, ask all aspirants in the Governorship Primaries to report for fresh screening between today and tomorrow. I call on all aspirants to remain in the All Progressives Congress as we guarantee fairness and justice to all concerned. The schedule and time for each aspirant shall be communicated.”

Giadom had acknowledged that the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, in a unanimous judgement, affirmed the suspension of Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole by his ward in Edo State as member and National Chairman of APC.

He, therefore, recalled that on the 16th of March 2020, Hon Justice S.U. Bature in suit no FCT/HC/M/6447/2020 had ordered that, with the earlier suspension of Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomohle, he, Victor Giadom, should act as APC National Chairman. He noted that the Order could not be immediately effected at that time because of the temporary reprieve the Court of Appeal granted Oshiomohle on the same date. Giadom declared that having removed the temporary reprieve Tuesday by the Court of Appeal and considering the fact that the party cannot allow for a vaacum, he has assumed office as Acting National Chairman of APC in compliance with the order of the court.

Advertisements

“I, therefore, most humbly solicit the support of the entire leadership and members of our great party in achieving this very important responsibility.

“I want to assure all party members that the All Progressives Congress will obey court orders/judgements as to bring sanity to our great party. Time for selective compliance of Court Orders and judgements is over,” he declared.

the Ag. Chairman ordered that the Deputy Organising Secretary of APC, Muhammad Sani Ibrahim, should immediately resume office as the Acting. National Organising Secretary in compliance with the judgement of the Federal High Court in suit no: FHC/ABJ/CS/733/2018 which removed the former National Organising Secretary, Emmanuel Ibediro, since 24th of September 2018. “This is to ensure strict compliance with the Rule of Law,” he said.
The acting national chairman appealed to the party leaders for cooperation at all levels in the onerous task to reposition the leadership of the party so as to guarantee fairness and justice to all.

The conflicts in the devastated APC deepened as the NWC disowned Giadom, APC national secretary who now succeeds Oshiomhole temporarily, and appointed Abiola Ajimobi, Deputy National Chairman, South; APC acting national chairman; while Shuabu, Deputy National Chairman, North; is also insisting on resuming as APC acting national chairman.

FFK react to Oshiomhole’s suspension and appointment of sick Ajimobi

Advertisements

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Femi Fani-Kayode has reacted to the latest developments in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Recall that hours after the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, dumped the ruling party citing his disqualification to contest in the primaries, the Appeal Court in Abuja upheld the suspension of the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

The APC National Working Committee, NWC, had on Tuesday announced that Abiola Ajimobi, who is said to have been sick, will be acting as the party’s National Chairman, a move that has been rejected by the Deputy National Secretary of the party, Victor Gaidom.

Advertisements

Following the Appeal Court ruling and the appointment of Ajimobi, Gaidom released a statement saying that he was the right man for the job, citing an earlier order by the Federal Capital Territory High Court.

And Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, described the whole scenario playing out in the APC as “stranger than fiction.”

Reacting in a tweet on Wednesday, Fani Kayode said, “The day that Obaseki leaves @OfficialAPCNg, the Court of Appeal declares that Oshiomole is no longer Nat. Chairman of the party and Sen. Ajimobi, the man that has been declared Acting Nat. Chairman, ends up in a coma in the hospital. The whole thing is stranger than fiction.”
