Barcelona block question claims most referees are Madrid fan.

Five consecutive wins have put Barca into second place in La Liga, ahead of Real

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique claims to have heard from a former referee that 85% of match officials in Spain have an affinity for Real Madrid and has suggested it would be impossible for them not to favour Los Blancos during games, even just subconsciously.

Pique, who has won La Liga eight times with Barcelona over the last 12 years, mused that if ever there is a 50/50 decision or a referee is unsure of something, that significant majority would be likely to give Real the benefit of any doubts.

“A former referee, I don’t remember who he was, said that 85% of the referees are fans of [Real] Madrid,” Pique said in an interview on YouTube channel Post United.

“It is a statistic you look at [and think], how can they not whistle in favour of Madrid? Unconsciously, but how are they not going to give more to one side than the other?

Gerard Pique has questioned how La Liga referees can be impartial | Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

“I totally respect the professionalism of the referees. I know they try to do the best job possible, but when there is a moment of doubt…?”

Following a wretched start to the season, which at several points saw them fall into the bottom half of the table, Barcelona have rediscovered their form over the last six weeks.

Pique himself is injured but he has watched his teammates pick up 26 points from a possible 30 since the misery of losing to Cadiz almost two months ago.

Five consecutive wins have put Barca into second place in La Liga, ahead of Real, although Atletico Madrid have left both clubs in their wake this season and have opened up a 10-point lead.

It puts Diego Simeone’s side on course to win their first title since 2013/14 and it would be only the second time since 2004 that anyone other than Barca or Real has lifted the trophy.

Just in: Edge discusses reunion interest in ex tag partner.

@newsworthywriter

Advertisements

Although the two stars have found great success as singles stars, they also had a very successful run as a tag team.

Edge made his big return at last year’s Royal Rumble and this year, his former tag team partner, Christian, also made his in-ring return at the event.

Both stars had been retired for several years due to them not being medically cleared to compete as Edge had neck issues while Christian had a history of concussions.

Now, the best friends are back wrestling for the company. Although the two stars have found great success as singles stars, they also had a very successful run as a tag team.

Thus, Edge would be interested in doing another tag team run, which is something that he spoke with The Metro about.

Advertisements

‘I would love it! I think at some point that would need to happen -just because there’s so many opportunities there. Between Edge and Christian against The Usos – I mean, man! Edge and Christian against The New Day, Edge and Christian against Ziggler and Roode, Edge and Christian versus the Street Profits. Not for nothing, Edge and Christian versus Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. There’s some stuff there.”

Edge also talked about Christian getting medically cleared, his return at the Royal Rumble and more.

WWE has announced the release of SmackDown star Steve Cutler.

The company issued the standard statement they send out when they release a wrestler: “WWE has come to terms on the release of Steve Cutler. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Cutler has been with the company since 2014 and was brought up to the main roster last year alongside Wesley Blake and Jaxson Ryker as part of The Forgotten Sons.

The group disappeared from WWE TV several months ago until Ryker was brought back as part of the Raw roster with Elias.

Meanwhile, Cutler and Wesley Blake were added to King Corbin’s act as the Knights of the Lone Wolf.

It’s not clear if this is just a one-off or the beginning of a wave of releases as the company often does to cut costs.

Last month, Lars Sullivan was released by the company but his release was not related to budget cuts.

Adamu’s tenure extension got Nigerians blasting Buhari.

@newsworthywriter

Advertisements

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Rtd), Abdulmajid Ali also told The Guardian that the extension was the right decision by the Federal government.

Nigerians, yesterday, kicked as President Muhammadu Buhari extended the tenure of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, and forwarded the names of the immediate past service chiefs to the Senate as non-career ambassadors-designate.

Buhari extended Adamu’s tenure, which ended on Monday, by three months. The extension was announced to correspondents yesterday by the Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammad Dingyadi, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The elongation became necessary, according to him, to allow for a robust and efficient process of appointing a new IG.

Advertisements

He said: “This is not unconnected to the desire of Mr. President to, not only have a smooth handover but to also ensure the right officer is appointed into that position. Mr President is extending by three months to allow him to get into the process of appointing a new one.”

The minister dismissed insinuations that the extension had created a lacuna in the system, adding that it was within the President’s constitutional prerogative.

He dismissed as social media creation earlier stories that the IGP had been retired.

“It was one of those social media stories that one cannot control,” he said.

Advertisements

The nomination of the ex-service chiefs was contained in a letter to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

The nominees are: Gen Abayomi G. Olonisakin (rtd), Lt Gen Tukur Y. Buratai (Rtd), Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (rtd), and Air Vice Marshal Mohammed S. Usman (rtd).

Advertisements

The President, according to the letter, said the proposal is in accordance with Section 171 (1), (2) (c) & sub-section (4) of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

The President stated: “I have the honour to forward for confirmation by the Senate, the under-listed five names of nominees as Non-Career Ambassadors-Designate.”

The office extension and nomination came at a time some Nigerians had called for the prosecution of the ex-service chiefs for alleged infractions committed in office; and the replacement of the IGP, having clocked the mandatory retirement age.

Advertisements

Prominent among them was a former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose. He called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and other relevant authorities to begin the immediate probe of the tenure of the former service chiefs for alleged human rights abuses and extrajudicial killings under their watch.

The ex-governor also accused the ex-service chiefs of serving Nigeria with pecuniary gains and exposed the citizens to Boko Haram insurgents and other criminal elements.
Similarly, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had demanded an immediate probe into the tenure of the former service chiefs to unravel the circumstances behind security lapses and compromises in the country during their tenure.

Reacting to the development, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN) described the extension of the expired tenure of the IGP as illegal and unconstitutional.

According to him, Section 215 (1)(a) of 1999 Constitution states: “There shall be an Inspector-General of Police who, subject to Section 216(2) of this Constitution shall be appointed by the President on the advice of the Nigeria Police Council from among serving members of the Nigeria Police Force.”

Advertisements

Adegboruwa pointed out that section 216(2) stipulates that: “Before making an appointment to the office of the Inspector-General of Police or removing him from office, the President shall consult the Nigeria Police Council.”

He stated that paragraph 27 of the third schedule to the 1999 Constitution states: “The Nigeria Police Council shall comprise the following members: (A) the President who shall be the Chairman; (B) the Governor of each State of the Federation; (C) the Chairman of the Police Service Commission; and (D) the Inspector-General of Police.”

Advertisements

Relying on the above citations, he argued that when the tenure of a serving IGP expires on the ground of completing the mandatory 35 years of service, he cannot be asked to continue in office beyond his mandatory tenure.

He insisted that an IGP who has served the mandatory years of service ceases to be a member of the Nigeria Police Force from the date of the completion of his service, adding that Adamu ceases to be a member of the NPF from February 2, 2021.

“Under and by virtue of Section 215(1)(a) of the Constitution and Section 7(3) of the Police Act, 2020, only a serving member of the Nigeria Police Force can be appointed as IGP. Mr Adamu, having completed his mandatory years of service on February 2, 2021, he cannot be appointed as IGP, from outside the force.

Advertisements

“The President lacks the power to reabsorb a retired police officer back into the NPF through a purported tenure extension, which is not contemplated by law. The President cannot appoint an IGP or extend the tenure of a retired IGP without the advice of the Nigeria Police Council, which in this case has not met to consider, let alone approve such tenure extension.”

A Lagos lawyer, Chima Adiele, also described the appointment as improper.

“It kills the ambition of other officers who are also qualified for the job. It seems as if it is only the current IGP that is qualified for the job. It looks like he wants to humiliate a particular set of persons because two years is enough for them to have fished out some else.

“More so, it is unconstitutional. What is the essence of the Constitution and statutes if not to regulate orderliness, conducts and actions? Someone’s tenure expires and you recalled him as if there are no other persons in that establishment that could handle the job. As far as I am concerned, such conduct is not in order,” he stated.

Advertisements

Similarly, a former second vice president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Monday Ubani, said the reason given for the extension was untenable.

“Does that mean that the President was not aware of when the tenure of the IGP will end? It will be better for the President to just say he wants to extend his tenure rather than saying he needs ample time to select the new helmsman for the police because there was enough time to do that.

Advertisements

“Although the President has the discretion to appoint, remove and extend appointments, the new police act, which he signed, limited the act of extending tenures in my view. So, I am wondering whether his action is not a clear violation of the act he signed recently,” he stated.

Noble Reporters Media gathered that Commissioners in Police Service Commission, including its chairman, Musiliu Smith frowned on the decision to allow Adamu another three months.

Some police officers contacted by NoRM‘s known Media expressed displeasure over the extension.

Advertisements

The officers who spoke on condition of anonymity said a new IGP was desperately needed to rekindle the long lost morale of officers and men after the carnage experienced as a result of #Endsars protest.

Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Taiwo Lakanu, however, said it was a welcome development.

Lakanu, “This IGP is one of the best IGP that the country has ever produced. The extension would allow him to consolidate on infrastructural development for the force. He is articulate and he knows what he is doing. The extension will also give the Federal Government ample time to select the best officer to succeed him.”

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Rtd), Abdulmajid Ali also told NoRM‘s known Media that the extension was the right decision by the Federal government.

Advertisements

“There are a lot of projects, which he initiated, he needs time to complete them. He would now have time to stabilise his community policing project and complete some of the good works he started. I am highly in support of it,” the DIG said.

According to security expert and publisher of Chief Detective magazine, Dipo Kehinde, “It is most likely the President has given this three-month tenure extension to buy time for proper security checks on the list of candidates presented to the President.

Advertisements

“You will notice that some of the candidates are very desperate in their bid. This cautious step by President Buhari is in order”.

Publisher of Crime World magazine, Albert Uba criticized the extension.

According to him, “The evolving scenario is a confirmation that we may not find a solution to the problem of insecurity in the country for as long as President Buhari remains in office.

Advertisements

“With this, staff morale will further nose-dive because there are so many odds operationally against IGP Mohammed Adamu, who was supposed to vacate office and allow fresh ideas into the Force.”

Former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Sir. Mike Ejiofor simply told NoRM‘s known Media, “I am short of words.”

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of trying to use ambassadorial appointments to shield the immediate past service chiefs from the investigation over alleged killing of innocent Nigerians and crimes against humanity.

The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, charged the Senate to eschew all partisan considerations and stand on the side of the people by rejecting the demand by President Muhammadu Buhari to confirm them as ambassadors.

Advertisements

“It is indeed sacrilegious and a horrible assault on the sensibility of Nigerians that the APC government is seeking to use ambassadorial appointments as a desperate measure to secure diplomatic immunity for the former commanders and protect them from investigation, arrest and possible prosecution by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the atrocities committed against innocent Nigerians under their command,” he said.

The PDP asserted that appointing the former service chiefs as ambassadors would confer diplomatic immunity on them and provide them with a route for escape.

Ronald Koeman blast PSG’s Di Maria over comment on Messi.

Advertisements

Koeman did express his delight with his team’s performance on the night after Barca came back from two goals down in normal time and then scored three goals in extra time.

Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman has hit out at Angel Di Maria over the PSG forward’s comments suggesting Lionel Messi could join him in Paris next season.

Messi’s contract at Camp Nou expires at the end of the season and PSG have been mentioned as a possible destination, in part because they are one of only a handful of clubs that could afford the Argentine star’s massive wages.

Advertisements

PSG’s sporting director Leonardo has opened the door to a move, telling France Football last month: “Great players like Messi will always be on PSG’s list. But this is of course not the time to talk about it, or to dream about it.”

Di Maria echoed his sporting director’s comments on Wednesday after his side’s 3-0 win over Nimes.

Advertisements

“Yes, yes, I hope so,” Di Maria told Canal Plus of a possible PSG move for his international team-mate. “There are many possibilities. We have to be calm and things will develop.”

Koeman got word of those comments and speaking after Barcelona defeated Granada 5-3 in an extra-time thriller in the Copa del Rey, the Dutch manager accused Di Maria of being disrespectful.

“It seems to me a lack of respect. Someone can be wrong in saying something like that,” Koeman said.

Advertisements

“It is not fair, I do not think it is respectful towards Barca to speak like that of a player who is ours. So many people from PSG talk a lot about Leo, who plays for Barca.

“Besides, we have a tie against them,” Koeman added, referring to the teams’ upcoming Champions League last-16 matchup.

Koeman did express his delight with his team’s performance on the night after Barca came back from two goals down in normal time and then scored three goals in extra time.

“It’s incredible,” Koeman added. “The football is incredible. I think we’ve done well. We had chances to win the game earlier.

Advertisements

“The team has been huge. In the last five minutes of the second half, we scored two goals. Then extra time was incredible

“The first thing that stands out about the team is their mentality. We never stop trying.”

United Nations order Bangladesh army probe after Media’s investigation.

Advertisements

The contract, dated June 2018, was signed by the Directorate General Defense Purchase, the body charged with buying Bangladesh’s military supplies.

The United Nations is calling for a full investigation into evidence of corruption and illegality involving the Bangladesh army, which was exposed during an investigation released by NoRM‘s known Media on Monday.

The corruption involves Bangladesh’s Chief of Army Staff, General Aziz Ahmed, who is due to meet senior UN officials in New York next week.

Advertisements

In All the Prime Minister’s Men, NoRM‘s known Media’s Investigative Unit revealed that Bangladesh’s military purchased sophisticated and highly intrusive mobile phone surveillance equipment from Israel, which Bangladesh military commanders claimed was “for one of the Army Contingents due to be deployed in the UN Peacekeeping Mission”.

A spokesperson for the UN said that this was not the case and that its peacekeepers do not operate “electronic equipment of the nature described in the NoRM‘s known Media reporting”.

“Such equipment has not been deployed with Bangladeshi contingents in United Nations peacekeeping operations,” the UN spokesperson told NoRM‘s known Media.

Advertisements

“We are aware of the reporting by NoRM‘s known Media Investigations concerning allegations of corruption against senior officials in Bangladesh and the press release issued by the Ministry of Defence of Bangladesh. The allegation of corruption is a serious matter that should be investigated by the relevant authorities.

Bangladesh is the largest overall contributor of uniformed personnel to UN Peacekeeping missions, with more than 6,800 presently deployed in peacekeeping operations around the world.

IMSI-catchers
The surveillance equipment is called an “international mobile subscriber identity-catcher”, or IMSI-catcher. It is a tool that emulates cell towers to trick cellular devices into providing locations and data that is then captured by the device.

It can be used to track hundreds of attendees of demonstrations simultaneously, among other things.

Advertisements

The Bangladesh army said that the equipment was made in Hungary and not Israel, which the Muslim-majority country does not recognise.

The NoRM‘s known Media obtained the contract for the purchase, which deliberately concealed the fact that the manufacturer, PicSix, is an Israeli company. PicSix was set up by former Israeli intelligence agents and sent two experts to Hungary to train officers from the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Bangladesh’ military intelligence service, on how to operate the equipment.

Advertisements

The contract, dated June 2018, was signed by the Directorate General Defense Purchase, the body charged with buying Bangladesh’s military supplies. The manufacturer was said to be PicSix Hungary, an entity that does not exist according to Hungarian company filings.

NoRM‘s known Media obtained covert recordings of a middleman, James Moloney, admitting the IMSI-catcher was Israeli made. Moloney, an Irish national, owns a company called Sovereign Systems, which is registered in Singapore, though he, himself is based in Bangkok.
Moloney is recorded saying that Sovereign Systems was a front for Picsix’s business in Asia. He also admitted that the surveillance technology is “from Israel, so we don’t advertise that technology. We are very careful about our public profile.

“I could never say the Bangladesh army is my customer. We cannot do that,” he added.

Advertisements

He described the technology as “very aggressive and intrusive. You don’t want the public to know that you’re using that equipment.”

General Aziz Ahmed visits UN peacekeepers [Bangladesh Army website]

Human rights violations
According to Eliot Bendinelli from Privacy International, a UK-based privacy watchdog, authorities can use it to collect information on people taking part in demonstrations.

“You are looking at everybody who is in the area and so you can keep investigating and having more people under surveillance at the same time,” Bendinelli said.

Bendinelli added, “If you know what people are saying, where they are going to meet up, what they are planning to do, you can know a lot of things. And then you have the power to act.”

Advertisements

Eitay Mack, an Israeli human rights lawyer, told NoRM‘s known Media that the Israeli government does not scrutinise the human rights records of end-users. “For a country like Bangladesh, if they buy this equipment from the US or European Union, they have leverage on you when you use it for human rights violations and they might cancel the agreement,” he said.

“With Israel, it’s not like that, they don’t ask questions. They don’t care,” Mack said.

Advertisements

The knowledge that Israeli-made spyware could be used by Bangladesh to monitor opposition groups will spark further unease in a nation accused of multiple human rights violations.

According to Amnesty International, the government is involved in “unlawful killings and disappearances, arbitrary arrest and detention, and torture”.

All the Prime Minister’s Men
Months of undercover reporting revealed that the head of the army, General Aziz Ahmed, is aiding two of his brothers to escape prison sentences for murder, and that he ordered officers to help create a false identity for one who fled to Europe.

Advertisements

Aziz moved his fugitive brother, Haris Ahmed, to Hungary where he operates under the false identity, buying companies and property using kickbacks from military contracts and running extortion rackets with Bangladesh security forces. A second fugitive brother was in hiding in Malaysia.

General Ahmed is currently on a diplomatic visit to the United States where will meet UN officials to discuss Bangladesh’s current deployment of more than 6,000 troops for the UN in countries like Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia and Burundi. Aziz is due to meet the under-secretary-general for peace operations and other senior UN officials involved in peacekeeping operations.

The call for an inquiry by the UN will be a serious blow for the Bangladesh military.

The UN, whose military personnel are known as the Blue Helmets, spends nearly $7bn annually on its peacekeeping missions.

Advertisements

Bangladesh’s deployment generates significant funds for the Bangladeshi army and is prized as a mark of their international standing as a professional military force.

The concern expressed by the UN will put the Bangladesh Ministry of Defence under mounting pressure to defend General Aziz who has so far not commented himself on the investigation. The Bangladesh army public relations office described the investigation as “concocted and ill-intended”.
