Update: Iran buries murdered physicist, Mohsen with vows to retaliate

Advertisements

His body had been taken to the northeastern holy city of Mashhad late on Saturday where he was taken to the shrine of Imam Reza for a ceremonial circling of the tomb and prayers.

Iran has laid to rest assassinated nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, in the capital Tehran as authorities blamed Israel for the killing and repeated vows to avenge it.

The funeral on Monday, scaled down due to coronavirus protocols and attended only by Fakhrizadeh’s family and some military commanders, was held at the defence ministry headquarters in Tehran.

Iranian Gov’t confirms assassination of prominent physicist

Fakhrizadeh’s coffin, wrapped in an Iranian flag, was then taken to a cemetery near Imamzadeh Saleh mosque in the north of the city for burial.

Following that, it was taken to Fatima Masumeh’s shrine in Qom on Sunday, and later to the shrine of Imam Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic, in Tehran.

‘No terror will go unanswered’

Fakhrizadeh, a top figure in Iran’s nuclear and missile programmer, was killed outside Tehran on Friday after assailants targeted his car.

Meanwhile, Ali Shamkhani, secretary of the country’s Supreme National Security Council, accused Israel of using “electronic devices” to kill the scientist remotely

Advertisements

“The enemies know and I, as a soldier, tell them that no crime, no terror and no stupid act will go unanswered by the Iranian people,” said Defence Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami in a televised speech at the ceremony.

Hatami said the country and its people are honoured that Fakhrizadeh was “the founder of Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme” and will continue to follow his path.

“The criminal Americans have thousands of nuclear weapons and the criminal Zionist regime has hundreds of nuclear weapons. What are they for? Are they to be used as decorations in your homes?”

A representative of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at the defence ministry read out his statement, in which Khamenei repeated his call for a “definitive punishment” of those behind the assassination.

Advertisements

Reading Khamenei’s statement, Ziaeddin Aghajanpour said some inside the country believe dialogue and negotiations are the way to counter foreign aggressions.

“But this is not possible because our enemies are against the very nature of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said, adding Iran’s “enemies will never stop”.

Storyline: Court disagrees with EFCC’s exhibit against FMR NNPC GMD, Yakubu

Advertisements

Mohammed held that the primary evidence of the motion to be tendered was the original copy which is at the custody of the Supreme Court.

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, refused to admit a document sought to be tendered in evidence by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former Group Managing Director (GMD), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Andrew Yakubu.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed, in a ruling, held that the motion was inadmissible because the Economics and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was unable to bring to the court its certified true copy.

Former Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Andrew Yakubu arraigned before a Federal High Court for money laundering and financial fraud in Abuja…yesterday. (Noble Reporters Media / NoRM)

NoRM reports that Counsel to EFCC, Mohammed Abubakar, had, on Nov. 5, tendered a document in which Yakubu, who is the 1st defendant witness (DW1), tendered at the Supreme Court, seeking for an order of stay of execution restraining the Federal Government from taking over the money which the anti-corruption agency took away when its operatives raided his residence.

Advertisements

Abubakar said that Yakubu had deposed to an affidavit at the apex court that the money was kept at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kano by the EFCC.

But while being cross examined before Justice Mohammed by the anti-graft lawyer in the last adjourned date and question about the whereabouts of the money was put to the former GMD, said it was from the EFCC he got to know that the confiscated money was in CBN branch in Kano State.

Advertisements

However, Yakubu’s Lawyer, Ahmed Raji, SAN, urged the court not to admit the document on the premised that Abubakar ought to have come with its certified true copy being a public document.

In his ruling on Monday, Justice Mohammed said though it was not in doubt that the document emanated from the Supreme Court, “subsequently, to tender the document, it ought to have been certified.”

Quoting Section 35 of the Evidence Act 2011, he said “the content of a document may be proved either by primary or secondary evidence.”

Advertisements

He said for a motion to be tendered as a secondary evidence, it must have been certified, citing previous cases to back the ruling.

The judge, therefore, held that the document sought to be tendered by the EFCC was inadmissible in the law.

“It is hereby rejected and shall be marked: tendered and rejected accordingly,” he ruled.

Justice Mohammed, who also refused to hear the EFCC’s motion, seeking an order to visit the locus in quo (i.e the CBN in Kano) because it was not fixed for the day’s proceeding, adjourned the matter until Jan. 14, 2021, to hear the anti-graft agency’s motion.

Recall with NoRM that the EFCC, in 2017, raided the house of the former NNPC GMD in Kaduna State and found 9, 772, 800 dollars (9.7 million dollars) and 74, 000 pounds in a safe.

Yakubu was, however, arraigned on March 16, 2017, on six counts but was ordered by the Court of Appeal to defend counts three and four which bordered on failure to make full disclosure of assets, receiving cash without going through a financial institution and intent to avoid a lawful transaction in alleged violation of Section 1(1) of the Money Laundering Act, 2011 and punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the Act.

US Election: Trump’s administration throws final supreme court fight

Advertisements

The Republican who has spent his presidency seeking to limit immigration has said he does not want to allow congressional representation to foreigners in the country illegally.

United States President Donald Trump’s administration wages its last major policy fight before the Supreme Court Monday as it seeks to exclude undocumented immigrants from the population count used to determine states’ representation in Congress.

If the outgoing president’s plan goes forward, states with large numbers of undocumented immigrants could see their influence reduced in the US House of Representatives.

It would amount to a last-minute victory or defeat for Trump, who is due to leave the White House and hand over to President-elect Joe Biden on January 20 even though he is still refusing to concede his electoral loss.

Advertisements

The US census is carried out every 10 years as spelled out in the Constitution, and it determines certain federal aid and the number of seats each state holds in the House of Representatives, the lower house of Congress.

In July, with the census underway, Trump issued a directive to exclude the country’s estimated 10 million undocumented immigrants from the count determining the number of House seats.

Advertisements

Until now, the census has included all residents of a state apart from foreigners on a temporary visa.

Several Democrat-led states, including New York, which has a large number of immigrants, have challenged the change and have been victorious in lower courts.

The Trump administration as a result asked the Supreme Court to intervene urgently since the president is due to transmit the results of the 2020 census and the number of seats for each state to Congress in January.

Advertisements

Monday’s arguments before the court will be by telephone due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and a decision is expected soon.

US President Donald Trump speaks to reporters after participating in a Thanksgiving teleconference with members of the United States Military, at the White House in Washington, DC, on November 26, 2020. – In the first TV interview since losing his re-election bid, President Donald Trump indicated on November 29, 2020 that he will never concede to Joe Biden and abandon his conspiracy theory about mass ballot fraud. “It’s not like you’re gonna change my mind. My mind will not change in six months,” Trump told Fox News interviewer Maria Bartiromo. (Noble Reporters Media / NoRM)

In 2019, a narrow majority on the court blocked an attempt to ask for the citizenship of census participants, which risked further reducing foreigners’ willingness to respond and undercounting the population in certain states.

Since then, another Trump appointee has been named to the Supreme Court, with conservative justices now holding a six-to-three majority.

The justices could however limit themselves to questions of procedure in the case and avoid the issue entirely.

Advertisements

According to a study from the Pew Research Center, three states — California, Florida and Texas — could lose a seat each over the next decade if the change goes forward.

Three others — Minnesota, Alabama and Ohio — could gain one seat, Pew said.

Court to reconsider corruption case of ex Kygryz President.

Advertisements

Another politician freed from jail amid the chaos, Sadyr Japarov, is widely expected to triumph in a presidential election set for January 10.

A court in Kyrgyzstan on Monday overturned the conviction of a former president who was serving an 11-year jail sentence and ordered his corruption case to be retried.

Almazbek Atambayev, 64, who served as the Central Asian country’s president from 2011 to 2017, was sentenced in June on corruption charges linked to the early release from jail of a notorious crime boss during his presidency.

Former Kyrgyzstan President Almazbek Atambayev waves his hand as he stands inside a defendants’ cage during a court hearing in Bishkek on November 27, 2020. (Noble Reporters Media, NoRM)

Atambayev’s lawyer Zamir Zhooshev said that the court had reversed the verdict but that Atambayev would remain in prison for the time being.

Advertisements

“I think the district court will begin reconsidering the case next week,” Zhooshev told AFP by telephone.

Atambayev has always denied any guilt over the release in 2013 of ethnic Chechen crime boss Aziz Batukayev.

Batukayev was released on medical grounds before travelling to Chechnya, but the medical documents showing he had leukaemia were forged, Kyrgyz investigators said.

Advertisements

The charges against Atambayev emerged during his bitter power struggle with former ally and successor Sooronbai Jeenbekov, 62.

Jeenbekov in October became the third Kyrgyz president to resign over political unrest since the impoverished, mountainous country gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Atambayev was briefly freed from jail in dramatic scenes during the tumult that followed a disputed October 4 parliamentary vote but was re-arrested days later.

Japarov took on the roles of prime minister and acting president in the aftermath of Jeenbekov’s resignation but left both posts this month in order to compete in the elections, as demanded by the constitution.

Advertisements

Japarov, a 51-year-old populist whose supporters demanded last month that Jeenbekov step down in his favour, was serving jail time for hostage-taking at the time of his release.

Japarov has insisted that the conviction overturned by a court after protesters released him was a “political order”.

Just in: 53 jailed amid deadly explosion in China

Advertisements

The explosion, sparked by a fire in Tianjiayi’s fertiliser factory, flattened the surrounding industrial park, blew out windows and dented metal garage doors of buildings as far as four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the site.

A Chinese court jailed 53 people on Monday after convicting them on charges including bribery and negligence over a massive chemical factory explosion in eastern China last year that killed 78 people.

The blast in Jiangsu province in March 2019 was one of the worst industrial accidents in the country in recent years and led to the closure of the plant.

Advertisements

Executives and employees of Jiangsu Tianjiayi Chemical company received sentences ranging from 18 months to twenty years in prison, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

A handful of local officials also received jail terms.

The court in Jiangsu’s Yancheng city found that the company knowingly produced and stored hazardous chemicals and waste material despite “storage venues that did not meet safety requirements”.

It also found that six local government agencies — including the city’s environmental protection authorities — had falsified documents in order to hide the risk posed by Tianjiayi’s activities, with some officials accepting bribes.

Deadly industrial accidents are common in China, where safety regulations are often poorly enforced.

In 2015, massive chemical blasts in the northern port city of Tianjin killed at least 165 people.

Nigerian born set to serve as deputy treasury officer under Biden’s Gov’t

Advertisements

It was a day of history. Nelson Mandela, legendary freedom fighter and later president of South Africa, was walking out from prison after 27 years in prison, and the older Adeyemo wanted his son to witness history as a source of inspiration.

Adewale “Wally” Adeyemo, a Nigerian-born attorney and former senior international economic adviser during the Obama administration, will serve as deputy Treasury secretary under former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, who Biden plans to appoint to lead the Treasury Department.

The Deputy Secretary of the Treasury in the US government, advises and assists the Secretary of Treasury in the supervision and direction of the powerful Department of Treasury and its activities, and succeeds the Secretary in her absence, sickness, or unavailability. The Deputy Secretary plays a primary role in the formulation and execution of Treasury policies and programs in all aspects of the department’s activities. In addition, the Deputy Secretary is the only official other than the secretary who can sign a Treasury Order-a document that delegates authority residing in the Secretary or Deputy Secretary to another Treasury official, establishes Treasury policy, and establishes the reporting relationships and supervision of officials.

Mr. Adeyemo’s life journey is the perfect meaning of the immigrant’s dream in the United States. It is a story of hard work, inspiration, and strict family values that came together 25 years ago when early in the morning of February 9, 1990, he was steered out of bed by his father, Joseph Adeyemo, now principal at the Terrace View Elementary School, Colton, in California.

“I could feel the hope Mandela inspired not only in South Africans but also in my father. Watching Nelson Mandela go from prisoner to president and start the process of bringing together a country was more than inspirational, it motivated me to imagine how I could use public service to improve the world around me” the younger Adeyemo told the U.S. Senate Committee On Banking, Housing, And Urban Affairs confirmation hearings for the position of Assistant Secretary for International Markets and Development.

Advertisements

A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his bachelor’s degree and the Yale University Law school, where he was the student–body president, the desire for public service developed in 2009 when Mr. Adeyemo joined the Treasury Department after law school, working alongside policymakers charged with coordinating the international response to the global recession.

In 2010, he was seconded to the team charged to implement a part of the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, where he worked under Senator Elizabeth Warren as the first Chief of Staff of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Jihadist attack on N/East Nigeria claims over 100 lives – UN

Advertisements

The attack took place as voters went to the polls in long-delayed local elections in Borno State.

A weekend attack on a village in northeast Nigeria blamed on the Boko Haram jihadist group left at least 110 dead, the UN humanitarian coordinator in the country said Sunday.

Advertisements

“At least 110 civilians were ruthlessly killed and many others were wounded in this attack,” Edward Kallon said in a statement after initial tolls indicated 43 and then at least 70 dead from Saturday’s massacre by suspected Boko Haram fighters.

“The incident is the most violent direct attack against innocent civilians this year,” Kallon said, adding: “I call for the perpetrators of this heinous and senseless act to be brought to justice.”

Advertisements

The bloodletting took place in the village of Koshobe near the main city of Maiduguri, with assailants targeting farmers on rice fields.

Borno Governor Babaganan Umara Zulum attended the burial Sunday in the nearby village of Zabarmari of 43 bodies recovered on Saturday, saying the toll could rise after search operations resumed.

The assailants tied up the agricultural workers and slit their throats, according to a pro-government anti-jihadist militia.

Advertisements

The victims were among labourers from Sokoto state in northwestern Nigeria, roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) away, who had travelled to the northeast to find work, it said.

Six were wounded in the attack and eight remained missing as of Saturday.

Kallon, citing “reports that several women may have been kidnapped”, called for their immediate release and return to safety.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attack, saying: “The entire country has been wounded by these senseless killings.”

Advertisements

The polls had been repeatedly postponed because of an increase in attacks by Boko Haram and a rival dissident faction, ISWAP.

The two groups have been blamed for increasing attacks on loggers, farmers and fishermen whom they accuse of spying for the army and pro-government militias.

Many loses to death amid fresh Boko Haram attack in Borno

Advertisements

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum on Sunday morning, November 29, led kinsmen and other shocked residents of Zabarmari community for the funeral of 43 farmers slaughtered by suspected members of Boko Haram.

Though the victims lived in Zabarmari, a farming community in Jere Local Government Area of the state famous for rice cultivation and local processing, they were attacked and brutally murdered on Saturday, at Koshebe village, in Mafa Local Government Area while working in a rice field.

Advertisements

During the visit, a resident (named withheld) told Governor Zulum that some farmers are still missing after the massacre.

“Your Excellency, as you have seen here, 43 corpses were buried, but others have not been retrieved from the scene of the incident. Nobody can tell you the exact number of people killed. Some of the victims are still missing” the resident said.

Addressing the bereaved community, Zulum expressed his condolence over the gruesome killing of the farmers.

“First of all, accept my deepest sympathy over this carnage, once again, that affects all of us and every human with conscience. I am told some persons are still missing. We have been discussing with the military since yesterday, Insha Allah the remaining people will be traced soon.” he said.

Advertisements

The Governor while speaking to journalists said, “It is disheartening that more than 40 citizens were slaughtered while they were working in their farmlands. Our people are in very difficult situations, they are in two different extreme conditions, in one side they stay at home they may be killed by hunger and starvation, on the other, they go out to their farmlands and risk getting killed by the insurgents,”

“This is very sad. We are still appealing to the Federal Government to ensure recruitment of more our youths in the CJTF and hunters into the Nigerian military and the Civil Defence so that they can form part of the agro rangers that will protect farmers. We need many boots to protect farmlands and our youths understand the terrain. We will not lose hope because we have to remain optimistic about ending the insurgency” he added.

Paternity palava: I have no other Father except Soji Alabi – Tope Alabi’s daughter

Advertisements

This is following the recent paternity scandal involving the gospel singer and a certain Mayegun Olaoye.

Popular gospel singer, Tope Alabi’s daughter, Ayomikun, has come out to state that the only father she knows is her mother’s husband, Soji Alabi.

Based on online reports, Olaoye, claimed to be Ayomikun’s father, adding that Tope Alabi had blocked every avenue for him to know his biological daughter in the past 22 years..

Advertisements

In an interview with NoRM‘s known Media, the young lady stated that she was unconcerned about the development as her mother had since informed her about the man.

Ayomikun, however, emphasized that the only father that she has is Mr Soji Alabi, who has been married to her mother for over two decades and has been taking care of them.

“I know and will always know that my father is Soji Alabi. I do not know any other person and I have never met any other man. I cannot blatantly deny him because I have heard about him, but I have never had anything to do with this man before.

She added, “My mother never blocked any avenue for us to see. My mother even tried for me to have a relationship with him. I remember when I was about 15 years old, she used to tell me to try and talk about him. Even when we discuss marriage, they tell me that they would want to inform him.

“They always tell me all these things about him but he is the one that never tried to reach out to me. I mean that he has never ever tried to. We have never had absolutely any conversation with this man. I mean I have had absolutely no contact with this man; none whatsoever.

“I am very grateful to God for the kind of mother and father that I have. They have been the best people and after God, my parents are next in my life,” the singer’s daughter stressed.

2023: APC Chieftain reveals Buhari’s stand on GEJ presidency

Advertisements

The opposition party made this known in a statement on Sunday,November 22, through its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan.

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Julius Ihonvbere has said President Muhammadu Buhari at the moment has not shown any sign indicating that he is backing the prospects of Dr Goodluck Jonathan taking another shot at the presidency.

Recalls reports have claimed that All Progressives Congress (APC) is trying to convince Jonathan, a former president, to run for the presidency on its platform in 2023.

The reports were heightened after some governors on the platform of the APC visited Jonathan to felicitate with him on his 63 birthday anniversary.

Advertisements

However, Ihonvbere, who represents Owan West/East Federal constituency of Edo in the House of Representatives told Vanguard that he does not think president Buhari is considering presenting Jonathan as a successor.

He said:

“If it is the same president Buhari that we have seen so far, those who are reading his body language, I don’t know how they read it, I have not seen the body language saying that it is Jonathan he is going to present.

But Jonathan should also remember that under his administration, there were so many contradictions that he didn’t address.”

Advertisements

The lawmaker advised the former president not to make any hasty decision regarding the 2023 presidency so that he does not lose the respect he attained after he conceded defeat in 2015.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that a recent visit by governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to former President Goodluck Jonathan has further affirmed that Nigeria is better under the governance of the opposition.

NoRM gathered that the PDP stated this in reaction to the governors’ visit on Friday, November 20, describing it as an endorsement of the PDP’s administration.

According to Ologbondiyan, the opposition receives the visit by APC governors as an apology by the ruling party to the PDP and Nigerians over the lies and other allegations deployed to grab power.

Advertisements

Ologbondiyan went on to warn Nigerians to be careful of the APC’s antics, adding that the party will not allow the failedparty and its pranksters to mislead them once again.

He said:

“This visit to Jonathan by the APC governors is a direct acceptance of the successes recorded by our party in building a strong nation with a virile economy that was rated as one of the fastest-growing economies of the world.”
