Lautaro Martinez once again proved why he is a man in huge demand after sealing Inter Milan’s 2-0 victory over Napoli thanks to a superb solo goal at the San Siro
Antonio Conte’s side have moved up to second in Serie A with just one match remaining thanks to goals in either half from Danilo D’Ambrosio and Martinez.
But it was the latter’s strike in the 74th minute that stole the headlines as Inter kept their third consecutive clean sheet in Serie A.
After picking up the ball just inside Napoli’s half, Martinez – who has attracted heavy interest from Spanish giants Barcelona – turned and drove towards goal as Napoli’s players backtracked.
And after finding himself in plenty of space, the Argentine curled the ball home into the bottom right corner from outside the penalty area.
Inter – who are also still in the Europa League – had taken a deserved lead in the 11th minute thanks to D’Ambrosio after they started the game on the front foot.
D’Ambrosio had tucked home cleverly with his left foot first-time after receiving the ball in the middle of the penalty box.
The victory puts Inter into second – just a point above Atalanta with one match to spare in Serie A.
And the two teams in fact meet on the final day of the Serie A season on August 1 to battle it out for second spot.
And speaking following Inter’s victory on Tuesday evening, Conte admitted he is relishing the Atalanta clash.
Conte told Sky Sport Italia: ‘Atalanta have done great work over the last few years with Gian Piero Gasperini, growing season by season, bringing in players suited to the project who can change the game at any moment, in Serie A or the Champions League.
‘It’ll be a good test for us to see where we stand right now and I think it’s an excellent match to end the Serie A season on.’
