IPC graces IWBF to complete eligibility verification

Advertisements

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC), has agreed to grant additional time to the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) to finish verifying the eligibility of all 4.0 and 4.5 sport class players set to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Since January 2020, when the IPC declared the IWBF non-compliant with the 2015 Athlete Classification Code, the global governing body of wheelchair basketball has been required to conduct eligibility assessments of 132 4.0 and 4.5 sport class players set to compete in Tokyo.

This exercise – the first phase of an approved action plan towards Code-compliance – has found 119 players eligible and nine non-eligible.

Four cases remain outstanding pending further information, which is why the IPC has accepted the IWBF’s request to extend the deadline for a second time from the original date of May 29, 2020.

The Chief Executive Officer of IPC, Mike Peters said: “Due to the need to gather more information on four-player cases, the IPC has agreed to grant the IWBF a second extension to the original end of May deadline.

Advertisements

“With such a small number of athletes still to be reviewed, no new deadline has been set by the IPC although continued progress is fully expected of the IWBF.

“The IPC will also continue to monitor the IWBF’s ongoing compliance with the approved action plan,” he said.

In addition to assessing all 4.0 and 4.5 players due to compete at Tokyo 2020, the IPC in January also requested that the IWBF ensures its own classification rules and operations align and are fully compliant with the IPC Athlete Classification Code by no later than 31 August 2021.

At the moment, IWBF is excluded from the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games programme. Failure to meet this deadline will mean that wheelchair basketball will not be readmitted into the Paris 2024 Games.

EdoDecide’20: Ize-iyamu not good product, you can’t sell such – Wike tells Oshiomhole

Advertisements

Ahead of the September 19 governorship election in Edo State, the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, as a bad product.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications in Rivers State, Paulinus Nsirim, Governor Wike said ex-APC Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, had explicitly exposed the true identity of Ize-Iyamu.

The governor said it is an insult to Edo people for Oshiomhole to reverse his earlier position and ask the electorates to accept such a man.

Advertisements

Wike was said to have made the comments during an interview with a national television network in the state.

“After an analysis, backed with supporting video footages from the campaigns of the last election in the state, he declared with unequivocal clarity, that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the Edo State Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC is a bad product and you cannot sell a bad product to good and discerning people of Edo State,” the statement partly read.

According to Governor Wike, he drew his conclusion from the analysis of facts deducted from the previous governorship election in the state.

Advertisements

“Adams Oshiomhole told Edo people that Ize Iyamu was rusticated from school; that he poured acid on a fellow student that destroyed his manhood. That he is an armed robber that cannot be trusted with money. Such a character cannot be accepted by Edo people as Governor during the election.

“I respect the Binin tradition and I know that Edo people are educated to know that Oshiomhole cannot play on their intelligence. If he is now retracting what he said of Ize Iyamu, who is sure that he’s saying the correct thing now.

“Adams Oshiomhole’s sudden U-turn is a great insult on Edo people. This is an opportunity for Edo people both at home and in the diaspora to use their votes to tell Oshiomhole that they cannot take his lies anymore.

“From all indications, it is obvious that there is no strong opposition against Obaseki and he will win convincingly,” Wike was quoted to have said.

EdoDecide’20: PDP’s visit to Oba calls for no endorsement – Obahiagbon

Advertisements

The Deputy National Chairman on Communication and Publicity for the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Campaign Council in Edo State, Patrick Obahiagbon, has reacted to the visit by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains to the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.

Obahiagbon who was interviewed on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday said the visit does not translate to the revered monarch endorsing the PDP candidate and incumbent Governor, Godwin Obaseki for the September 19 governorship election in the state.

When asked if the APC candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu has the blessing of the royal father, Obahiagbon neither confirmed nor refuted the question.

Advertisements

He replied saying: The Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin is a neural traditional king. The Oba does not endorse anybody. The Oba prays for all his subjects.

“If you watch his prayers very meticulously, he would say that “may the candidate that would bring freedom, may the candidate that will bring economic prosperity to my kingdom have the blessing of the great architect of the universe.

“So we cannot situate or locate the visit of PDP to His Royal Majesty to be an endorsement. In any case, the APC is yet to carry out its campaign. When we do that, we will equally visit His Majesty,” he said.

Advertisements

Obahiagbon also reacted to the endorsement of some religious leaders to Governor Obaseki today, saying that the action does not pose a threat to Ize-Iyamu in the polls.

The APC chieftain explained that going by the endorsements his party’s candidate has received so fair, Ize Iyamu is confident of victory in the governorship election.

Speaking further, Obahiagbon berated Governor Obaseki over the resignation of seven councillors in his ward in Oredo Local Government of the state.

He said the councillors’ decision to declare their support for Ize-Iyamu speaks volumes as the election draws nearer.

Eid al-Adha: Muslims celebrate, pray in Abuja. [Nigeria]

Advertisements

Muslims in Nigeria on Friday joined other faithful around the world to observe the 2020 Eid El Kabir celebrations.

Eid El Kabir or Eid Al-Adha is an Islamic festival marked annually on July 31, to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to follow Allah’s command to sacrifice his son Ismail but after his faith was tested, a ram was provided and slaughtered instead.

In Nigeria, the day is usually declared as a public holiday and the public enjoys off days while schools and most businesses are closed.

However, the celebrations that usually accompany the festivities in many parts of the globe will not be felt this year owing to the COVID-19 pandemic just as the Federal Government has resolved to curtail its spread in Nigeria by advising people to observe all safety protocols especially physical distancing.

But despite the restrictions, preparation for the event appeared to be in top gear between Wednesday and Thursday as people were seen travelling and livestock markets were buzzing with sales.

Advertisements
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has wished all Muslims a happy and safe Eid.

In a statement early on Friday, the President announced that he observed the Eid El-Kabir prayers at home with his family, in keeping with the advisories from the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

He also urged all Muslims to put into practice the noble teachings of the Islamic religion and put the fear of God in their daily activities in order to make our society better.

Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also wished Muslims a happy Eid.

Advertisements

In an interview, he asked them to pray for those who have contracted the COVID-19 as well as those who have lost their lives to the virus.

He appealed to them not to fret about not being able to gather to pray but rather, reflect on the lessons of Eid-El Kabir and practice it in their daily activities.

“Not gathering for the Eid for this Sallah celebration is due to the circumstance and the environment and it’s for the safety of all of us and that is crucial.

“The essence of today in our religion is about sacrifice. So, demonstrate it, to be able to pray for our health, those who have lost their lives, pray for forgiveness for them,” he said.

Just in: 17-year-old Twitter hack mastermind nabbed

Advertisements

Criminal charges were filed on Friday against the suspected teenage mastermind of an epic Twitter hack and two others who allegedly helped hijack celebrity accounts to swindle people out of more than $100,000 in a cryptocurrency scheme.

Prosecutors in Florida said they filed 30 felony counts against 17-year-old resident of the state identified as the “mastermind” of the cyberattack. He was arrested in Tampa, Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren said.

Separately, the US Attorney’s Office in San Francisco announced charges against three people, one of them from Britain, for roles in the mid-July cyberattack that rocked Twitter.

Advertisements

US officials said 19-year-old Mason “Chaewon” Sheppard of Britain along with Nima Fazeli, 22, of Florida face criminal charges in the case.

Details about the third individual were not released by US officials because he is a minor, but it appeared they were referring to the Florida teenager being prosecuted as adult in that state.

The attack on Twitter involved a combination of “technical breaches and social engineering” that let hackers hijack accounts of politicians, celebrities, and musicians, according to federal prosecutors.

Advertisements

Follow the money
The three defendants are accused of hacking Twitter accounts, creating a scam Bitcoin account, and sending out imposter tweets from hijacked account offering to double Bitcoin cryptocurrency deposits.

“This case serves as a great example of how following the money, international collaboration, and public-private partnerships can work to successfully take down a perceived anonymous criminal enterprise,” said criminal investigation special agent Kelly Jackson of the Internal Revenue Service.

The attack which Twitter said resulted from a “phone spear phishing” attack enabled hackers to take control of accounts of famous people such as Bill Gates, Elon Musk and former US president Barack Obama and dupe people into sending Bitcoin.

“These crimes were perpetrated using the names of famous people and celebrities, but they’re not the primary victims here,” Warren said in a release.

Advertisements

“This ‘Bit-Con’ was designed to steal money from regular Americans from all over the country.”

Scamming by phone
Hackers who accessed dozens of high-profile Twitter accounts in mid-July gained access to the system with an attack that tricked a handful of employees into giving up their credentials, according to a company update.

Twitter said this week that the July 15 incident by Bitcoin scammers stemmed from a “spear phishing” attack which deceived employees about the origin of the messages.

The hackers “targeted a small number of employees through a phone spear phishing attack,” according to a Twitter Support statement.

Advertisements

“This attack relied on a significant and concerted attempt to mislead certain employees and exploit human vulnerabilities to gain access to our internal systems.”

Twitter said that following the incident it has “significantly limited access to our internal tools and systems” and is taking additional steps to tighten security.

The massive hack of high-profile users from Elon Musk to Joe Biden affected at least 130 accounts, with tweets posted by the usurpers duping people into sending Bitcoin to accounts that Warren said were associated with Clark.

The official accounts of Apple, Uber, Kanye West, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and others were also affected.

Advertisements

Faked tweets were sent from 45 accounts, according to Twitter, and the hackers accessed private messages of 36 and downloaded Twitter data from seven.

The incident has raised concerns about the security of the platform increasingly used for conversations on politics and public affairs.

John Dickson of the security firm Denim Group said the latest disclosure did not necessarily suggest a sophisticated attack from a nation-state and noted it may have been possible to find targets through research on LinkedIn or Google.

“This is like the original hackers from the 1980s and 1990s; they were very good at conning people and getting them to give their credentials,” Dickson said.

Zimbabwean novelist ‘arrested’ during protest

Advertisements

Police in Zimbabwe on Friday arrested internationally-acclaimed novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga as they enforced a ban on protests coinciding with the anniversary of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s election.

Dangarembga, 61, was taken away in a police truck as she demonstrated in the upmarket Harare suburb of Borrowdale alongside another protester, a photographer saw.

Streets in the centre of the city were largely deserted as police and soldiers set up checkpoints to prevent entry.

Opposition politician Jacob Ngarivhume, head of a small party called Transform Zimbabwe, had called for demonstrations against alleged state corruption and the country’s slumping economy

The protests were timed to coincide with the second anniversary of Mnangagwa’s election, which the opposition says was a fraud.

But most people stayed at home after police on Thursday issued a ban and warned of a tough response.

“All security arms of government are on full alert and will deal decisively with any individuals or groups fomenting violence,” it warned.

There were more checkpoints and roadblocks than usual on roads leading to the centre of the capital, manned by police and soldiers.

In the central business district, police carrying batons or riot shields were heavily deployed, a Media journalist (known to Noble Reporters Media) saw.

Novelist arrested
In the suburbs, only a handful of people appeared to brave the ban.

A photographer saw Dangarembga and a fellow protester, Julie Barnes, hauled into a truck full of police armed with AK-47 rifles and riot gear.

Shortly afterwards, she tweeted: “Arrested! At Borrowdale. Ope it will be OK”. She also tweeted a photo of herself and Barnes, sitting on the floor at a police station.

She had been carrying placards calling for reforms and the release of Hopewell Chin’ono, a prominent journalist arrested last week under a government crackdown.

Minutes before her arrest, she told Media (known to Noble Reporters Media): “It seems that there has been a big reaction by the authorities to this protest.

“They declared it illegal — I’m not quite sure (why), apart from the fact that they don’t want it…Our constitution gives Zimbabweans the right to demonstrate peacefully and that’s what we are doing.”

The Cambridge-educated author is the only Zimbabwean woman writer to win the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and has often been praised for speaking out on women’s issues.

She leapt to prominence in 1988 with “Nervous Conditions”, a coming-of-age story about a girl’s battle to escape poverty and gain an education. The book became an instant classic.

Her arrest came days after her latest novel, “This Mournable Body,” entered the long list for the Booker Prize.

In a statement, police confirmed she had been arrested “for trying to incite the public to engage in illegal demonstrations while carrying placards written various political messages meant to cause public disorder.”

Among several others arrested Friday was Fadzayi Mahere, a lawyer and spokeswoman for the main opposition, the Movement for Democratic Change-Alliance.

Mahere live-streamed via Facebook images of riot police scaling metal barriers into a suburban eatery where she had retreated after her protest, and arrested her.

The British ambassador in Harare, Melanie Robinson tweeted: “Very concerned about reports of abductions, arrests and threats targeting those exercising constitutional rights. Freedom of expression is vital even in times of COVID19, with social distancing observed”.

Poverty and hunger
The government had denounced the protests, calling them an “insurrection”.

Ruling ZANU-PF spokesman Patrick Chinamasa earlier this week claimed that US ambassador Brian Nicholls was sponsoring the protests and called him “a thug”.

Mnangagwa took over from longtime ruler Robert Mugabe after a coup in November 2017.

But hopes among many that he would end Mugabe’s disastrous economic slump have been dashed, and many Zimbabweans say they are worse off than before.

The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) says some 8.6 million Zimbabweans, or 60 percent of the population, will require food aid as a result of a drought, economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The country has recorded 3,092 virus cases including 53 deaths.

COVID-19: EU reserves 300mn doses of potential vaccine

Advertisements

The EU announced Friday that it had struck a deal with French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi for 300 million doses of a potential coronavirus vaccine.

The European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm which negotiated the agreement, said it would allow all 27 member countries to purchase the vaccine once it was proven to be safe and effective.

The announcement comes on the same day the US government said it would provide up to $2.1 billion to Sanofi and GSK for the development of a COVID-19 vaccine, as the world continues to battle the pandemic.

As official data revealed coronavirus lockdowns had caused a devastating 12 percent economic contraction in the EU in the second quarter of 2020, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the bloc was doing everything it could to help find a vaccine.

Advertisements

“We are in advanced discussions with several other companies,” she said in a statement, adding that Europe was investing in a “diversified portfolio of promising vaccines”.

“This increases our chances to obtain rapidly an effective remedy against the virus.”

Sanofi hopes to seek marketing authorisation from the European Medicines Agency for a vaccine in June next year.

The French government welcomed Friday’s announcement as a “decisive step”.

Advertisements

“This future contract will allow each EU member state to order the vaccine under good conditions once it has shown enough proof of its effectiveness and safety,” the French government said in a statement.

Six months after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global emergency, the novel coronavirus has infected more than 17 million people, with global daily cases now approaching the 300,000 mark.

Europe overall has nearly 210,000 deaths from 3.2 million cases, and with infections rising again in several countries there are fears a “second wave” of the pandemic could be on the way.

The highly restrictive lockdowns enforced to deal with the pandemic earlier this year has caused economic turmoil and an effective vaccine may be the only long-term solution to the highly contagious respiratory disease.

Magistrate court dismisses suit against senator Abbo

Advertisements

A Magistrate Court in Zuba on the outskirts of Abuja has dismissed the case of assault instituted by the Nigeria Police Force against the lawmaker representing Adamawa-North, Senator Elisha Abbo.

Although there is a viral video showing Senator Abbo assaulting a woman, Osimibibra Warmate; and a televised press conference in which the lawmaker apologised to the victim, the court dismissed the suit for lack of diligent prosecution by the police.

The Magistrate, Abdullahi Ilelah, who upheld a no-case submission filed by Senator Abbo, said the police failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the lawmaker indeed assaulted Osimibibra Warmate on May 11, 2019.

During the trial, two witnesses testified against Senator Abbo and they are Warmate who was the nominal complainant and a police officer, ASP Mary Daniel, who investigated the matter.

In her testimony, Warmate said she had gone to visit a friend, Kemi at Pleasure Chest Sex Toy Shop, Banex Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja on May 11, 2019, when the lawmaker walked in with three women.

She said suddenly, one of the women that accompanied Abbo started vomiting and later fainted.

Warmate said when she left the shop, she received a frantic call from the owner of the shop asking her to come to her aid as the lawmaker had accused her of fouling the shop’s air conditioning system that caused one of his female companions to vomit and was threatening to get her arrested.

The victim said when she returned to the shop and was cleaning up the vomit, two men, one of whom was a policeman in uniform, barged into the shop, assaulted them on the orders of Senator Elisha Abbo.

Protesters Storm NASS, Demand Prosecution Of Senator Abbo

The situation led to a protest by some Protesters who stormed the National Assembly complex in Abuja demanding the prosecution of the senator.

The protesters including popular activist Aisha Yesufu said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker, must be prosecuted alongside his police orderlies.

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, condemning the act of assault and demanding justice.

‘When Barca signed me, I was speechless’ – Trincão

Advertisements

Barcelona had a busy deadline day in the January transfer window, securing the signing of Francisco Trincao, and the Portuguese midfielder has admitted that the move was such a surprise when it happened he was lost for words.

Trincao is set to arrive in Catalonia at the end of the 2019/20 season, although it’s unclear what the plans are from there with regards to a loan spell.

“When Barcelona signed me, I didn’t know what to say,” Trincao explained to Barcelona’s official website.

“I had no words, it was a hugely proud moment for myself.

“This is a very important step for me to come and play for Barcelona.”

Having only played in Liga NOS, many supporters won’t be completely clear on how Trincao operates, and thus he sought to explain his style.

“I am very strong mentally, that’s my best quality,” Trincao added.

“I look for goals and to give assists that can help the team.

“I watch back my matches to see what I have done wrong and what I did well, I’m my own benchmark, I would highlight my dribbling ability and hard work.”

Advertisements

Replacing Neymar has proven a fruitless task for Los Cules as both Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho have failed to live up to expectations, whilst Antoine Griezmann is taking longer than expected to settle.

The club will hope that the same doesn’t happen with Trincao, especially if he remains with the senior team in 2020/21, which is what the player himself wants.

“Although I prefer to play on the right wing, I want to help from any attacking position,” Trincao confirmed.

“I want to play the maximum number of matches possible.

“I want to help this team to win the maximum number of titles.”

Transfer looking real: inter offers £235M for Messi

Advertisements

Inter Milan are reportedly building up to an attempt at pulling off the most audacious deal in the history of football.

The Italian giants are keeping eagle eyes on the unfolding situation with living legend Lionel Messi at Barcelona, who appears to be growing increasingly discontent by the week.

Messi, 33, has not signed a new deal at Barca and is able to walk away for free next summer, and Inter are ready to come in with an astonishingly lucrative deal, as report Italian oulet.

It is claimed Inter will put forward an incredible offer to Messi, with a collective salary of £235million over a four-year contract.

It would see the mercurial playmaker pocket earn just short of £60m per year, and would continue his playing days in European football through to the age of 38.

Advertisements

Such a move would mean Messi would once again be playing in the same league as his age-old rival Cristiano Ronaldo, and would replace the Portuguese superstar as the top earner in Serie A.

Despite reclaiming the Ballon d’Or last year and cementing his status as the best player in world football, Messi has been unable to inspire a struggling Barca team who have surrendered their La Liga title to rivals Real Madrid.

Messi and Barca remain involved in this season’s Champions League, which is set for a delayed conclusion in Portugal next month.

Yet this season Messi’s demeanour has sent waves of concern through the Barca camp, with many now fearing he will call time on the club he has spent the entirety of his senior career with.

Following Barca’s penultimate game of the La Liga season, in which they were embarrassingly beaten 2-1 by Osasuna, an emotional Messi let rip in his post-match comments.

Messi spoke about other sides bettering Barcelona for intensity. ‘This result summed up what we have been all season,’ he said, ‘a very inconsistent team’.

Recently Inter chief Giuseppe Marotta has emphatically played down the chances of the club sensationally signing Messi, claiming the move would be like something out of the realms of ‘fantasy football.’

Marotta was forced to address the topic after a large silhouette image of Messi was beamed onto Milan’s famous Duomo cathedral, causing mass hysteria.

Advertisements

According to NobleSports, Inter’s majority owners used the image to publicise the televising of the club’s game against Napoli on Tuesday evening in China.

And Marotta insisted that he cannot see how Inter can make any deal happen for the six-time Ballon d’Or winner at this moment in time.

Marotta told NS: ‘Messi on the cathedral? It wasn’t my idea. It reminds me of football from the past with such situations. We are talking about an icon, a great player, a desire that everyone has.’

Marotta went onto stress that it would be ‘extraordinary to see such a champion at Inter’, before adding: ‘It’s fantasy football, a utopian situation.’

Former EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu was suspended in July after corruption charges were brought against him, and the House of Representatives publicly investigated financial misappropriation at the NDDC amid a plethora of drama.
