Torino 1-2 Lazio, Captain Immobile helps close juve’s gap

Ciro Immobile gave away an early Torino penalty, but made up for it with the equaliser before Marco Parolo’s deflected strike completed another Lazio comeback.

Simone Inzaghi had to watch from the stands due to a touchline ban, as the Aquile fought to stay in the Scudetto race after Atalanta ended their 21-round unbeaten run with Massimiliano Farris on the bench. Senad Lulic, Luiz Felipe, Lucas Leiva and Bobby Adekanye were still out of action, while Marco Parolo shook off a knock. Torino were struggling just above the relegation zone and Simone Zaza wasn’t fit to start, so Simone Verdi stepped in.

It took just five minutes to break the deadlock, as Ciro Immobile used his arm to charge down Nicolas Nkoulou’s header on a free kick, allowing Andrea Belotti to convert. To make matters worse, the yellow card means Immobile will be suspended for the next match against Milan.

Immobile should’ve made up for his error by equalising on 22 minutes, but after springing the offside trap, he just clipped the crossbar one-on-one with Salvatore Sirigu.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic also blasted over from a promising position and Felipe Caicedo was booked, so he too will be suspended for the Milan match.

Immobile again fired off target after a quick one-two to burst into the box, while Sirigu took the sting out of a Parolo header at the end of a long Lazio attacking move, raining crosses into the box.

Caicedo sprung the offside trap on a ball over the top, but his first touch let him down. When Francesco Acerbi did get the ball in the net on the stroke of half-time, he was in an offside position.

Immobile did get the equaliser at the dawn of the second half, this time running on to a Luis Alberto through ball and toe-poking it into the far bottom corner, wrong-footing Sirigu.

With 29 goals in 29 Serie A rounds, Immobile is the most prolific striker since Antonio Valentin Angelillo had 31 by this stage in 1959.

Torino were even more pinned back than before, Milinkovic-Savic and Immobile attempts off target, Joaquin Correa’s charged down, then Sirigu used his legs to parry from Milinkovic-Savic.

Eventually, Parolo’s snapshot from the edge of the box took a decisive deflection off Bremer to wrong-foot the goalkeeper at the near post and turn the game around completely.

Correa’s low cross-shot flashed all the way across the face of goal, Sirigu getting just enough on it to turn that away, while Koffi Djidji flung himself in the path of another Correa attempt.

Torino finally put some pressure on in the last five minutes, but it was too little, too late, and Lazio again picked up all three points from a trailing situation.
