Edinson Cavani has reached an agreement to join La Liga side Atletico Madrid, with the Uruguayan expected to pen a three-year contract when he leaves Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Cavani has established himself as a modern great at PSG, becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and winning countless domestic honours despite dealing with some pretty egotistical players over the years, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Neymar.
However, it is expected he will leave in the summer, with PSG clearly looking to the future with the loan signing of Mauro Icardi before the 2019/20 season.
Now, Gianluca DiMarzio claims Atleti want to bring the former Napoli forward to Wanda Metropolitano as possible cover for Diego Costa, who is currently injured and doubtful to feature in the Champions League clashes with Liverpool in 2020.
However, the report also adds that an agreement between PSG and Atleti is still yet to be reached. Los Colchoneros boss Diego Simeone is said to have been eyeing Cavani for years, but may have to sell a few of his players before being able to bring the 32-year-old in.
Misfiring winger Thomas Lemar is one such player who has been linked with a move away from Madrid, with PSG’s Ligue 1 rivals Lyon interested and Simeone is thought to be prepared to cut his losses on a player who is yet to score or assist this season.
While Alvaro Morata has managed seven La Liga goals in 15 appearances, there is a distinct lack of threat elsewhere on the pitch for Atleti, with five players currently stuck on two league goals for the season each, including forwards Costa, Joao Felix and Angel Correa.
Cavani would be an obvious improvement to Atleti’s attacking options, even if he is approaching the twilight years of his career and has struggled with injuries this season. In eight Ligue 1 appearances Cavani has struck twice, also managing a Champions League goal across two substitute appearances.
